IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications Call for Papers Control and Communications The increasingly fast convergence of sensing, communication, and computing on cost effective, low power, thumb-size devices, is quickly enabling a surge of new applications. However, the ability to collect data over a network at a very fine temporal and spatial granularity, process such data in real-time, and perform appropriate remote control actions, requires the development of new theoretical foundations of remote control over unreliable networks. This sparks an increasing intellectual interest in the convergence of control theory with communications, coding, and information theory. On the one hand, we can fully benefit from the new technologies only if we can analyze the behavior of control processes acting over communications networks, accounting for the intrinsically stochastic nature of communications and observations. On the other hand, control applications represent non-trivial trade-offs among delay, reliability, estimation, and control; which necessitates a rethinking of communications systems in service of control. Determining the impact of uncertainty in wireless communications on the feedback-loop requires a generalization of classical control theory even for linear deterministic systems using a packet network; while the issues of timeliness in control applications give rise to open questions in real time information theory, as well as communications and coding theories for control applications. The goal of the proposed issue is to collect papers that will address the theoretical convergence of control and communications. We solicit contributions that address, but are not limited to, the following broad issues: estimator/controller design for wireless/remote control applications real-time and/or sequential information and/or coding theory the interplay between distributed sensing, wireless transmissions, and control the interplay between channel modeling, channel estimation, sampling time, and control dynamics cross-layer network design in service of control applications Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles will be considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to IEEE-JSAC guidelines.
