TWIN is a Fair Trade, membership-based organization, working to build better lives
for the poorest and most marginalised women and men in the trading chain. TWIN
does this through its Producer Partnership Programme, and through the creation of
market access for smallholder farmers organized in cooperatives in the global south,
through its wholly owned subsidiary company TWIN TRADING.

The role of Managing Director

TWIN is now looking for an exceptional person to lead the next phase of the
organisation’s development as Managing Director. Our new Managing Director will
be a leader and influencer, able to inspire a staff team, influence policy debates, and
manage programmes. The successful candidate will:

                  o Be committed to the values of Fair Trade;
                  o Have significant commercial and international development
                    experience, and experience of the not-for-profit sector;
                  o Understand the potential of smallholder farmers and of
                    cooperatives in development.
TWIN and TWIN Trading

Founded in 1985 with support from the Greater London Council, TWIN works with
more than 50 democratic farmer organizations in 18 countries, representing some
400,000 smallholder farmers of coffee, cocoa, sugar and nuts.         TWIN assists
farmers to build capacity, develop infrastructure, overcome market barriers, adapt to
climate change and improve product quality.

In 1991, with Oxfam, Traidcraft and Equal Exchange, TWIN founded Cafedirect.

In 1993 with TWIN’s help, farmers in Ghana established the Kuapa Kokoo Cocoa
Cooperative. Kuapa Kokoo and TWIN are leading shareholders in the Divine
Chocolate Co (launched as the Day Chocolate Company in 1998).

In 2001, TWIN launched Agrofair UK to bring Fair Trade fruit to consumers in the

In 2007, with producer partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America, TWIN established
Liberation Foods CIC a dedicated Fair Trade nuts business.

Then in 2011, TWIN supported the development of Afri Nut Ltd in Malawi.

In recent years, TWIN has sold its stake in Cafedirect, but remains active in the
coffee market through its in- house Fair Trade coffee trading operation. TWIN
continues to hold Board positions in the companies in which it is a shareholder.

Since its creation in 1985, Twin has helped hundreds of thousands of small-scale
producer partners access the international market in a fair and just way:

   o Twin’s capacity development work has contributed to improved democratic
     governance and more efficient business management in many smallholder
     producer organisations;

   o Twin has worked to raise the profile of smallholders in agricultural supply
     chains, thus increasing their influence and power in these supply chains;

   o Twin has pioneered alternative models of trade that empower smallholder
     producers, such as enabling primary producers to secure a stake in market-
     facing brands.

Twin and Twin Trading have a staff team of 18 based in London. A number of
consultants support our work around the world. Twin currently works with more than
50 democratic farmer organizations in 18 countries, representing some 400,000
smallholder farmers.
Job Description for Managing Director

Base: 3rd Floor, 1 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3LT (with frequent overseas travel
sometimes at short notice)

Reports to: Chair of TWIN Council and TWIN TRADING Board

Job purpose: The Managing Director plays a central, strategic role in Twin’s future.
S/he provides internal and external leadership, supervising all operations, advising
the Board, motivating staff, communicating with members, stakeholders and the
wider Fair Trade movement, and driving change.

Key responsibilities:

The Managing Director

      Works under the leadership of the TWIN Board in developing the strategic
       and business plan;
      Directs the implementation of the strategic and business plan;
      Reports to, and serves as the lead adviser to, the Boards of TWIN and TWIN
       Trading Ltd;
      Provides leadership and management of the Senior Management Team;
      Plans and directs TWIN and TWIN TRADING’s activities to achieve agreed
       targets for producer support, trading and financial performance;
      Recruits, selects and develops executive team members (and other senior
      Coordinates on strategic and governance issues with the companies in which
       Twin is a shareholder;
      Serves as a director on the Boards of associated companies, as requested by
       the TWIN Board;
      Maintains and develops TWIN and TWIN TRADING’s culture, values and
       reputation with staff, members, other partners and suppliers, customers,
       lenders, donors and regulatory bodies;
      Works with the Senior Management Team and staff to raise funds to deliver
       producer support programmes;
      Renews, maintains and develops TWIN and TWIN TRADING’s relationship
       with the Fair Trade Movement;
      Reports to the Council, Board and members on TWIN and TWIN TRADING’s
       plans and performance;
      Ensures the active participation of and engagement with Twin’s producer
       members in the global South and individual members in the global North;
      Carries out the responsibilities of a company director according to the law and
       Fair Trade values and principles;
      Ensures that TWIN is in compliance with the requirements of the Charity
       Commission and other regulatory agencies.

  TWIN’s new Managing Director will have a commitment to the principles of Fair
  Trade, and experience of:

     international development;
     the management of not-for-profit organisations
     commercial activity.

  We are looking for a senior executive with significant management experience in
  the social business and not-for-profit sectors, with particular expertise in project
  planning and evaluation, quality management and management of diverse teams,
  able to demonstrate an ability to adapt easily to new environments, build effective
  cross-cultural partnerships and deliver to plan.

  TWIN and TWIN TRADING’s new Managing Director will be a team player, with
  strong social and relationship skills, able to delegate responsibility effectively. An
  affinity with the mission of TWIN is essential.


     At least five years’ experience in a senior management role;
     Experience of working in the not for profit sector
     International development experience, preferably including work in a
      developing country and with agricultural value chains
     Experience of working directly to a Board;
     Substantial experience of managing staff.

     Ability to supervise and build teams, delegate responsibility and develop staff
     Must be a competent writer of proposals and reports
     Must be numerate and understand business finance (profit and loss, gross
      margin, capital, income, expenditure, cash-flow, overheads etc)
     Must be computer literate, and adept in use of MS Office, internet and e-mail
     Fluent English
     Fluent Spanish and/or French highly desirable
     Education to degree standard or equivalent
   Must already have all necessary legal clearance to work on a full time basis in
    the UK.

    Terms and Conditions of Employment

    The position of Managing Director is offered with a permanent contract of
    employment. The appointment will be subject to a 6 month probationary
    period. An attractive salary will be available for the successful candidate.

    The Managing Director will be expected to work full time; and may not take up
    any other appointment without the consent of the TWIN Board
