Section E: Specific Selection Criteria
MOUNTAIN BIKE (Elite, U23, Juniors)

NOTE: This Section E of the Cycling Australia ‘2008 AUSTRALIAN CYCLING TEAM SELECTION
POLICY AND CRITERIA’ is the Mountain Bike Specific section only of the overall policy and
criteria and should be read in conjunction with Section A: PREAMBLE of that overall policy and
criteria.
1. AVAILABLE START POSITIONS
1.1. QUOTA
1.1.1. In accordance with UCI qualification system for the 2008 Mountain Bike World
Championships, Australia has qualified the following maximum number of
entrants.
XCO DH 4X
Elite Men 6 7 + Sam Hill 7*
(Born 1985 & before)
Elite Women 3 No quota – Max 7 7*
(Born 1985 & before)
U23 Men 7 No category No category*
(Born 1986, 87, 88 or 89
U23 Women No quota – Max 7 No category No category*
(Born 1986, 87, 88 or 89)

* Elite 4X is ‘open’ entry to riders 17 years and over
1.1.2. Selectors will make final selections based on merit within the limits of the quotas
listed above for each division. There is no obligation by CA to fill quotas. Size
of the final teams will be determined by the selectors with input from the head
coach of each discipline.
2. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
2.1. Performance time period: 3 September 2007 to 12 May 2008.
2.2. Only results obtained at specified selection events may be considered in the selection
process.
2.2.1. Selection events are specified in each of the respective sections 3 to 10 below.
2.3. The National Mountain Bike Selectors may compare each athlete's performances in
specified selection events against the following performance standards:
2.3.1. Overall placing. For example 1st, 2nd 3rd etc.
2.3.2. Percentage time/speed differences: measured by the percentage difference
using the winner's time/speed in the category as the 100% standard.
2.3.3. Percentage speed or time comparisons across different racing categories at the
same events using the speed for XCO or time for DH of the winner of the elite
men’s race as the 100% benchmark.
2.3.3.1 Speed or time comparisons will only be applied where the
competitions in different categories are run over the same course and
under similar course conditions.
2.3.4. Specific performance evaluation standards are listed in each of the respective
discipline and category specific sections 3 to 10 below.
2.3.4.1 Specific performance evaluation standards listed in this document
should be seen as a guide to athletes as to minimum desirable
performance standards for National Team selection.
2.3.5. Priority in the selection process may be given to results based on the following
factors but not necessarily in the order shown:
2.3.5.1 UCI category of event
2.3.5.2 Performances obtained under conditions as listed that most closely
reflects those expected at the 2008 Mountain Bike World
Championships:
• Course
• Competition
• Climate
• Altitude
2.3.5.3 Performances obtained closer to 12 May 2008 may be given priority.
2.4 PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – PREVIOUS SEASONS:
As per clause 4.2.4 in Section A, performances from the previous two seasons may be
considered at the discretion of the National Mountain Bike Selectors on the
recommendation of the relevant National Coach especially where a quota has not been
filled.
CROSS COUNTRY
3 XCO – U19 MEN
3.1 Initial Selections: Three (3) athletes will be selected on the basis of the following
results:
3.1.1 1st Selection - 2008 U19 Men’s Australian XCO National Champion
3.1.2 2nd Selection - 2nd placed athlete in 2008 U19 Men’s Australian XCO National
Championships
3.1.3 3rd Selection - highest placed rider in the 2007/2008 U19 Men’s XCO National
Series who is not placed in the top two of the 2008 U19 Men’s XCO National
Championship
3.2 Additional Selections:
3.2.1 Events: The National Mountain Bike Selectors may select additional riders in
U19 Men’s XCO based on consideration of performances at the following events
against the performance standards set out in clause 3.2.2. below:
3.2.1.1 2008 U19 Men’s XCO National Mountain Bike Championships
3.2.1.2 2007/2008 U19 Men’s XCO National Mountain Bike Series
3.2.1.3 2008 U19 Men’s XCO Oceania Championships
3.2.2 Performance standards: Performances in the listed selection events will be
evaluated against the following standards but not necessarily in the order as
shown:
3.2.2.1 Overall results: athletes who win any of the races in the 2007/2008
U19 Men’s XCO National Mountain Bike Series
3.2.2.2 Consistently competitive results: performances in the 2007/8 National
Mountain Bike Series and the 2008 National Mountain Bike
Championships, that clearly demonstrate consistently competitive
results against the initially selected athletes
3.2.2.3 Speed Comparison: U19 male XCO athletes achieving a speed equal
to or greater than 93% of the speed of the winning elite man at any of
the selection events listed in 3.2.1
4 XCO – U19 WOMEN
4.1 Results from any eligible U19 female athlete racing in any category at the 2007/2008
XCO National Series or 2008 XCO Australian Mountain Bike Championship may be
considered in the selection process.
4.2 Competition results from other mountain bike races around Australia and/or the 2008
Oceania Championships may also be considered.
4.3 Speed comparison: the National Mountain Bike Selectors may use a speed comparison
benchmark as outlined in clause 2.3.3 in this section for U19 female XCO athletes who
achieve a speed equal to or faster than 77% at any of the selection events outlined in
clause 4.1 of this section.
5. XCO – ELITE MEN, ELITE WOMEN, U23 MEN & U23 WOMEN
5.1. Selections:
5.1.1. Events: For Elite and U23 XCO selection purposes the National Mountain Bike
Selectors will only consider results obtained at the following events from the
2008 season:
5.1.1.1. 2008 National Mountain Bike Championships - Canberra, ACT, 24-28
January 2008
5.1.1.2. 2008 Oceania Championships – Nelson, NZL, 13-16 March 2008

5.1.2. Performance standards: (see clause 2 above) XCO Elite and U23 athletes will
be considered for selection to the 2008 Australian Mountain Bike Team by the
National Mountain Bike Selectors based on the following performances
standards but not necessarily in the order as shown:
5.1.2.1. 2008 National XCO Championships: the 2008 National XCO
Champions – Elite and U23 – will be given priority for selection.
5.1.2.2. 2008 Oceania XC Championships: the 2008 Oceania XCO
Champions – Elite and U23 – if Australian, will be given priority for
selection.
5.1.2.3. Elite athletes with a ranking in the top 100 of the UCI Mountain Bike
Individual Ranking for Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) at 12 May 2008
will be given consideration for selection to the National Mountain Bike
Team.
5.1.2.4. U23 athletes with a ranking in the top 100 of the UCI Mountain Bike
U23 Individual Ranking for Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) at 12 May
2008 will be given consideration for selection to the National Mountain
Bike Team.
5.1.2.5. International event performances – Elite XCO: the following
performance standards for elite XCO athletes will be applied to results
from international competitions:
a) Results within 10% time differential of the winner at 2008 UCI
Mountain Bike World Cup XCO cross-country events
b) Overall results: 1st, 2nd or 3rd at any of the UCI registered XCO
mountain bike selection events listed
c) Results which do not meet the standards listed in clauses
5.1.2.5.1 or 5.1.2.5.2 will then be considered against criteria
listed in clause 2.3.5 above
5.1.2.6. International event performances – U23 XCO: The following
performance standards for U23 XCO athletes will be applied to results
from international competitions:
a) Results within 10% time differential of the leading U23 athlete
at 2008 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup XCO cross-country
events
b) Overall results: with consideration of U23 athletes only, 1st,
2nd or 3rd placed U23 competitors at UCI registered XCO
cross-country mountain bike events
c) Results which do not meet the standards listed in clauses
5.1.2.6.a or 5.1.2.6.b will then be considered against criteria
listed in clause 2.3.5 above
5.1.2.7. If an athlete fails to finish on the same lap as the winner at any of the
nominated selection events that performance may be discounted or
disregarded.
6. TEAM RELAY
6.1. Entry and Eligibility
6.1.1. Any athlete already registered as a competitor for a World Championship event
(XCO, DH or 4X) is eligible for entry to the Team Relay event.
6.2. Selections
6.2.1. Athletes will be consulted as to their availability for this event.
6.2.2. The National Coach in consultation with the National Mountain Bike Team
Manager will select the members for the Australian team for the Team Relay
event.
DOWN HILL
7. DH – U19 MEN
7.1. Initial Selections: Three (3) athletes will be selected on the basis of the following
results
7.1.1. 1st Selection - 2008 U19 Men’s Australian DH National Champion.
7.1.2. 2nd Selection - 2nd placed athlete in 2008 U19 Men’s Australian DH National
Championships.
7.1.3. 3rd Selection - highest placed rider in the 2007/2008 U19 Men’s DH National
Series who is not placed in the top two of the 2008 U19 Men’s DH National
Championship.
7.2. Additional Selections:
7.2.1. Events: The National Mountain Bike Selectors may select additional riders in
U19 Men’s DH based on consideration of performances at the following events
against the performance standards set out in clause 7.2.2 below:
7.2.1.1. 2008 U19 Men’s DH National Mountain Bike Championships
7.2.1.2. 2007/2008 U19 Men’s DH National Mountain Bike Series
7.2.1.3. 2008 U19 Men’s DH Oceania Championships
7.2.2. Performance standards: Performances in the listed selection events in 7.2.1
will be evaluated against the following standards not necessarily in priority of the
order shown:
7.2.2.1. Overall results: athletes who win any of the races in the 2007/2008
U19 Men’s DH National Mountain Bike Series
7.2.2.2. Consistently competitive results: performances in the 2007/8 National
Mountain Bike Series and the 2008 National Mountain Bike
Championships, that clearly demonstrate consistently competitive
results against the initially selected athletes
7.2.2.3. Time Comparison: U19 male DH athletes achieving a time equal to or
less than 106% of the time of the winning elite man at any of the listed
selection events
8. DH – U19 WOMEN
8.1. Results from any eligible U19 female athlete racing in any category at the 2007/2008
DH National Series or 2008 DH Australian Mountain Bike Championship may be
considered in the selection process.
8.2. Competition results from other mountain bike races around Australia and/or the 2008
Oceania Championships may also be considered.
8.3. Time comparison: The National Mountain Bike Selectors may use a time comparison
benchmark as outlined in clause 2.3.3 in this section for U19 female DH athletes who
achieve a time equal to or less than 135% at any of the selection events outlined in
clause 8.1 of this section.
9. DH – ELITE MEN AND WOMEN
9.1. Selections:
9.1.1. Events: For Elite DH selection purposes the National Mountain Bike Selectors
will only consider results obtained at the following events from the 2008 season:
9.1.1.1. 2007/2008 National Series race – Thredbo, 15 & 16 December 2007
9.1.1.2. 2008 National Mountain Bike Championships – Canberra, ACT 24 –
28 January 2008
9.1.1.3. 2008 National Mountain Bike Series Final – Mt Beauty 3 February
9.1.1.4. The following DH international events:

9.1.2. Performance standards: (see clause 2 above) DH Elite athletes will be
considered for selection to the 2008 Australian Mountain Bike Team by the
National Mountain Bike Selectors based on the following performances
standards but not necessarily in the order as shown:
9.1.2.1. 2008 National DH Championships: the 2008 National DH Champions
will be given priority for selection
9.1.2.2. 2008 Oceania DH Championships: the 2008 Oceania DH Champions
(if Australian) will be given priority for selection
9.1.2.3. Elite athletes with a ranking in the top 50 of the UCI Mountain Bike
Individual Ranking for DH as at 31 December 2007 will be given
consideration for selection to the National Mountain Bike Team
9.1.2.4. Time Comparison: Elite Women DH athletes achieving a time equal to
or less than 130% of the time of the winning elite man at any of the
listed selection events
9.1.2.5. Event performances – Elite DH: the following performance standards
for Elite DH athletes will be applied to listed selection events:
a) Race wins
b) Podium (1st, 2nd or 3rd) performances
c) Multiple top 5 performances
9.1.2.6. All results may also be considered against criteria listed in clause
2.3.5
FOUR CROSS (4X)
10. 4X
10.1. Selections:
10.1.1. Events: For Elite 4X selection purposes the National Mountain Bike Selectors
will only consider results obtained at the following events from the 2008 season:
10.1.1.1. 2007/2008 National Series races
a) Thredbo, ACT 15 & 16 December 2007
b) Blackhill Newcastle, NSW 10 & 11 January 2008
10.1.1.2. 2008 National Mountain Bike Championships, Canberra, ACT 24 – 28
January 2008
10.1.1.3. The following 4X international events:

10.1.2.4. All results may also be considered against criteria listed in clause
2.3.5 above.
11. SCHEDULE FOR NATIONAL XCO, DH AND 4X TEAM SELECTIONS
All athletes wishing consideration for selection to the 2008 Australian National Mountain Bike
Team should have completed and returned to CA the 2008 National Team Agreement before
the completion of the 2008 Australian National Mountain Bike Championships 24 – 28
January 2008.
U19 Team
• Friday 8 February – Final date for forwarding Junior selections to CA CEO
• Tuesday 12 February – Junior Team selections announced by CA
• Friday 15 February – Closing date for appeals against non-selection
• Week commencing 18 February – Period identified to conduct appeal hearings, if required
• Week commencing 17 March – Review of non-selected juniors in light of performances at
2008 Oceania Championships. Riders advised directly by the National Coaches.
ELITE & U23 Team
• Monday 12 May – final date for submission of international results to respective national
coach
• Friday 16 May – Final date for forwarding Elite and U23 selections to CA CEO
• Tuesday 20 May – Team selections announced by CA
• Friday 23 May – Closing date for appeals against non-selection
• Week commencing 26 May – Period identified to conduct appeal hearings, if required
