Weakened adaptation in autism: a working hypothesis
Recent research with typical individuals suggests that face-coding mechanisms are generally flexible or adaptive. For example, repeated exposure (adaptation) to a particular face biases subsequent perception towards the opposite identity of the adapting face, and this occurs in both adults and school-age children. We reported recently that children with autism showed significantly less adaptation (i.e. shift in perception) than typical children, suggesting that adaptive face-coding mechanisms are compromised in children with the condition. Since adaptive mechanisms are ubiquitous in perceptual systems, in this talk I shall consider whether weakened adaptive processes could extend beyond faces and be a general property of autism.
