How Can I do a Resume? A common question asked by anyone applying for a job is “How do I write a resume”? A resume is a snapshot of your qualifications for a job through which you hope to attain a job. Therefore, it shouldn’t be something that you just write off the top of your head. You have to put thought into writing the resume. You need to prepare for writing, just as you would with a college assignment. First make a list of all your education and work experiences. Include both paid and unpaid experience because both add value to your skills. You can gain skills needed on a job from doing volunteer work, when it is pertinent to the job you are applying for. Look at the ad posting and pick out items from your list that apply specifically to the job. While you will put will your experience in the resume, these items are the ones you should try to highlight so as to make them visible to the employer. In your work experience, write down the duties you preformed and any responsibilities you had. For your educational experience, write down your degrees and certificates, so that you won’t inadvertently forget to include any that might be of importance to the employer. Include courses that have a direct relevance to the job posting. If you received any awards, list these as well. From all your jot notes, pick out all the items that relate to the job posting and show that you have the skills required to do the job. The first thing you write on a resume is your full name and full contact information. The next section should be a profile summary of your skills and qualifications. This should be short and to the point. You don’t want to bore the employer right away. You just need to give him/her a brief idea of what you can bring to the position and make enough impression that the employer will want to continue reading. Use only two or three statements or a few bulleted points. The next section you include depends on whether you are a recent graduate or if you have been in the workforce. Recent graduates, with very little work experience, should list their educational background next. Those with work experience should start off with the most recent position, providing brief details on the duties preformed on the job. Of course, they can also start off with educational background if they have recently taken courses or if they hold high qualifications. Once you have everything in writing, you should then reread the resume to make corrections. This is only the first draft and you may have to go through several drafts before you get the right words and phrases in place.
