Abstract. This paper describes a learning process for visualizing a complex function with MATLAB.
The research is a result of a lecture given for undergraduate students in Mathematics Departement of
Science and Mathematics Faculty at the Satya Wacana Christian University 2010.
Complex function must be expressed into real part and an imaginary part in order to
visualize it. We take some complex functions which are usually can also be found easily in real

numbers. These are a quadratic function ( z ), a cubic function ( z ), an exponential function and
trigonometric functions such as sin(z) and cos (z) and some their variations.
By keeping the radius constant for any complex number in the complex plane, one may draw
the domain of z in a complex plane and its image to an other complex plane. The angle is then kept to
be constant to get a mapping curve based on the given function. Finally both parameters are varied
to have general figures. We also illustrate a real part and an imaginary part of the function to be
presented as a surface of two variables (x,y).
