Program Description
The Nursing Executive Leadership program prepares nurses to lead within complex integrated
healthcare delivery systems. The executive hybrid format, cohort model is tailored to the
working professional and gives registered nurses the knowledge and skill to lead improvements
in patient safety and quality of care to ensure that both clinical and financial outcomes are met.
The program begins with a three-day face-to-face orientation followed by intensive class
sessions, primarily online with in-person classes in a compressed format completing 2 classes (6
credits) over a 7 week period.

Program Outcomes
The program is competency based and prepares the future executive nursing leader with

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) competencies for nurse executives are
integrated throughout the curriculum including communication and relationship management;
leadership; professionalism; knowledge of the healthcare environment; and business skills and
principles. The curriculum incorporates standards and guidelines from the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), American Nurses’ Association (ANA), and AONE
assuring graduates eligibility for national certification as a Nursing Executive when experience
requirements are met.

Curriculum: Nursing Executive Leadership
The core curriculum (12 credits) includes Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Health
Policy, Nursing Research, and Advanced Practice Roles. Administration courses (18 credits)
include Human Resource Management, Management and Leadership in Healthcare
Organizations, Analysis of Healthcare Delivery Models, Best Practices in Healthcare
Management, and Clinical Economics and Finance (two courses). Two practicum courses (6
credits) provide leadership experience in healthcare organizations and the opportunity to learn
from experienced nursing and healthcare leaders.
The Masters Degree, Nursing Executive Leadership program consists of 36 credits and will be
delivered in an executive hybrid format over 18 months. The curriculum pathway is designed
for two courses to be completed over a 7 week session.

Curriculum: Dual Masters Degree-MBA/MS Nursing: Master of Business
Administration/ Master of Science, Nursing Executive Leadership
The MBA/MS Nursing Executive Leadership dual degree program provides extensive
professional preparation in nursing leadership and business. The dual degree program consists
of 57 credits offered in either a full or part-time schedule.
The Nursing Executive Leadership curriculum is offered in an executive hybrid format cohort
model (primarily online with in-person classes in a compressed format). The MBA program
through Shidler College of Business is taught exclusively in face-to-face classes with evening
time class schedules tailored to working students in full-time and part-time pathways.
