Dr. Hugh Ratchford Black II ‘86

               Hugh (’86 VA Sigma/W&L) is a physician with the Asthma & Allergy Specialists in
               Charlotte. He attended Washington & Lee University and graduated from the University
               of Virginia School of Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency at the
               University of Alabama and his fellowship at UNC.

                 Hugh was attracted to the medical profession and to pediatrics due to the immediate
impact he was able to make on his patients’ lives. Completing his residency in General Pediatrics and a
fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonary, he focused on treating children with allergies, asthma, and Cystic
Fibrosis. As an adjunct teaching professor for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, he
enjoys teaching local physicians in training (residents) and medical students from UNC Chapel Hill.

He has been a part of the UNC medical school teaching program in Charlotte for 15 years. Dr. Black has
done extensive research on Cystic Fibrosis and is co-director of the Western Carolina Cystic Fibrosis
Center. Additionally, he has ongoing participation in asthma related research and is currently active in
the Charlotte Pediatric Medical Society. In his spare time, Dr. Black spends time with his wife and two
children, and he helps in community outreach efforts to shelter homeless families. He was voted Top
Doc in pediatric allergy and pediatric pulmonary medicine in the Charlotte area. Hugh can be reached at

Alumni Notes

James V Palmieri, III, ’78 PA Phi, is a project manager and architect with The FWA Group at 500 East
Blvd in Charlotte. Married to Joyce, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon with an architecture degree.
James was a senior associate with Moseley Architects from 2000 to 2008, and prior, with ADW
Architects from 1996-2000 and Edward J DeBartolo Corp from 1988-1996. Reach out to James at email

                 Casper Wiggins, ’71 SC Gamma, joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1999 and was
                 previously on the accounting faculty at Texas A&M University for seventeen years. His
                 primary teaching and research areas are accounting information systems and financial
                 accounting. Dr. Wiggins has published over 35 academic and professional articles, many
                 of which address the economic impact of accounting and tax rules.

               His research has appeared in several leading accounting journals including
Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Information
Systems, Journal of the American Tax Association, Journal of Business Logistics, and others. He has
served in numerous roles in the American Accounting Association including Chair of the Information
Systems Section and co-editor of the Journal of Information Systems.

He has also been very active in the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA) and served as its
President in 2008-2009. He has recently become increasingly involved with accounting accreditation and
is presently a member of the Accounting Accreditation Committee (AAC) of the AACSB. Dr. Wiggins was
serving as interim co-chair of the Accounting Department for the 2010-2011 academic year. He is a

Thomas B. “Tim” Hilton, ’69 NC Alpha, is CEO of Carolina Handling in Charlotte. Carolina
Handling is one of the largest and fastest growing organizations in the material handling
industry with over 400 Associates, five fully-staffed service facilities, a Corporate Training and
Development Center, and strategically located sales and service personnel to serve their
customers. In 1989, Don Pratt retired and Tim, then the President of the company became the
principal shareholder. In 2002, Tim became the Chief Executive Officer.
