                                   Lesson Plan for Class 1: Vitamin D


  I.   Target Audience: Fifth Graders

 II.   Objectives:

               1) After instruction, given a list of five foods, five drinks and five different activities,

               the student will be able to distinguish which ones contribute to an increase of

               Vitamin D in the body.

               2) After instruction, the student will be able to identify from a list of ten, three different

               roles that Vitamin D plays in our body.

               3) After instruction, the student will be able to recite three benefits of meeting the

               recommended amounts of Vitamin D

               4) After instruction, when given a list of deficiency diseases, the student will be able to

               identify two vitamin D deficiency diseases.

               5) After instruction, the student will be able to explain three ways in which they

               personally are going to make changes in their diet and activity to ensure that they are

               meeting the recommended amounts of Vitamin D intake.



III.   Time Allotted: 15 minutes

IV.    Introduction (1 minute) : Introduce self and topic

V.     Pre-assessment (2 minutes): Verbal Pretest on sources of Vitamin D, functions of Vitamin D in

       our body, benefits of meeting the recommended amounts of Vitamin D, Vitamin D deficiency

       diseases, and ways to increase Vitamin D levels.

VI.    Content and Sequence :

               1) Vitamin D sources (3 minutes)

                       i. Have students raise hands and pick three volunteers to tell a food they think is

                       high in vitamins.

        ii. Discuss sources from which we get Vitamin D

        iii. Show students a can of tuna, a carton of fortified Orange juice, milk, cheese,

        and fortified cereal

2) Roles Vitamin D plays in our body (1 minute):

        i. Discuss the functions of Vitamin D in our body

        ii. Pass around a real bone

3) Benefits of meeting the recommended amounts of Vitamin D (3 minutes):

        i. Discuss the benefits of meeting recommended amounts of Vitamin D.

        ii. Give each student a piece of paper and instruct them to draw a sun with

        the different benefits of Vitamin D written on the inside. Encourage the kids to

        give them to put them on their refrigerators at home as a reminder to increase

        Vitamin D intake.

4) Vitamin D deficiency: diseases and risk factors (1 minute)

        i. Discuss the two common deficiency diseases that can occur from insufficient

        Vitamin D.

        ii. Show students picture of bones with and without rickets

        iii. Make sure students know that deficiencies are very easy to avoid and ensure

        them that they are not likely to get these diseases.

5) Increasing Vitamin D in our bodies (3 minutes)

        i. Choose three student volunteers to tell one way they are going to increase

        their Vitamin D.

        ii. Give each student a small Ziploc bag of Vitamin D fortified cereal with the

        Vitamin D handout stapled to it.

VII.     Evaluation (1 minute): Verbal Posttest on sources of Vitamin D, functions of Vitamin D in our

        body, benefits of meeting the recommended amounts of Vitamin D, Vitamin D deficiency

        diseases, and ways to increase Vitamin D levels.




Materials Needed:


Pretest and Posttest


Pictures of healthy and Rickets bones


Handout identifying sources of Vitamin D


Can of Tuna, 2 boxes of Vitamin D fortified cereal, an empty jug of Skim Milk, and a block of cheese


Real bone


White paper and Markers/crayons


Snack size plastic baggies


Paper hand outs to staple to baggies
