Frank S Bright ‘83
Music was an important part of life early on for Frank Bright. The sounds of his father’s piano
and fiddle playing could often be heard emanating from the family home in Lookout Mountain,
Tennessee. It was only natural then when Frank started playing piano at the age of eight. He
continued to nurture his love of music, and by his teenage years,
Frank was also playing the guitar and dobro. His first professional
experience came while attending Davidson College in North
Carolina. There Frank started playing piano for special events and
dinners in and around the Davidson campus. After graduating from
Davidson, Frank moved to Atlanta to pursue a masters degree in
                             theology at Emory University.

While in Atlanta, Frank Continued his music career playing for private parties and restaurants,
including stints at the Sounds of Buckhead and Marchello’s Italian Restaurant. His professional

credentials also include a summer program studying jazz composition at the prestigious Berklee

PATRIOT TRANSPORTATION KEEPS IT IN THE FAMILY WITH NEW CEO

Patriot Transportation Holding Inc. is bringing in a new CEO, but it’s keeping things in the
family. The Jacksonville-based transportation and real estate company said Thompson (Tom)
Baker II '81 NC Theta (Davidson) became president and chief executive officer on Oct. 1,
succeeding his uncle, John Baker. John Baker will become executive chairman and his brother
Edward (Ted), the current chairman, will become chairman emeritus. Ted is Tom’s father. “It’s
one of those things that happened because it was time to do it,” John Baker said Friday. “Ted,
who is 75, wanted to slow down a little bit. I specifically wanted to be executive chairman
because I don’t intend to slow down that much,” said John, who is 61. John Baker will focus on
Patriot’s strategic direction and initiatives, and 52-year-old Tom will handle day-to-day
operations.
