ADNAN MENDERES UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF EDUCATION
On January 9, 1997, The Adnan Menderes University (ADU) senato signed the
decision for the foundation of the Faculty of Education (FEDU) in Aydin. Instruction began 4
years later with 104 Pre-service Elementary School Teacher undergraduates. Since then, ADU
of Education continued to grow in, staff, students, campus life, athletics and facilities. Now,
well over 800 students at undergraduate level and approximately 35 students at graduate level
are enrolled in the faculty’s eight academic departments.
With its 50 academic staff, the faculty prepares teachers for work in school settings
from pre-K through higher education, prepares researchers to produce work designed to
influence learning and professional practice, and also prepares qualified employees for
various areas such as administration, supervision, research, guidance, psychological services,
curriculum development, testing and measurement. As faculty, we generate, apply, and
transite knowledge about teaching and learning at all levels of school. We also collaborate
with colleagues in the profession who are attempting to solve problems in contemporary
schooling, and ultimately help diverse learners - children, adolescents, and adults - become
participating citizens in the global community of the 21st century.
We offer bachelors and masters degrees in programs of study that are housed in three
academic divisions: Elementary Education, Educational Science, and Fine Arts. In addition
Computer Education and Instructional Technologies, Turkish Languages Education, Foreign
Languages, Secondary Science and Mathematics Education, and Secondary Social Sciences
departments were founded and will be ready to accept students in near future.
In 2004, students entering Social sciences teacher education have the bottom OSYS
score of 321 (This is ranked 11 th among 42 faculty of educations offering this program in
Turkey). Students entering Elementary teacher education have the bottom OSYS score of 318
(This is ranked 28 th among 57 faculty of educations offering this program in Turkey. This is
28 point above the minimum required by OSYS to enter elementary teacher education).
Students entering Elementary teacher evening education have the bottom OSYS score of 313
(This is ranked 12 th among 41 faculty of educations offering this program in Turkey).
Students entering Early childhood teacher education have the bottom OSYS score of 314
(This is ranked 21 th among 36 faculty of educations offering this program in Turkey. This is
28 point above the minimum required by OSYS to enter elementary teacher education). As an
average, students have to be placed in the first 10 percentile among all OSYS participants to
enter our teacher education programs.
Our faculty graduates who entered the teaching profession in 2004 were among the
best, based on their scores on a national examination for new teachers. Our faculty is ranked
3rd in 2004 and ranked 6th in 2005 in educational sciences section among all faculty of
educations in Turkey on this national exam. Our faculty is also ranked 7th in 2004 and 2nd in
2005 in General Culture section of this exam.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION
Admission to Adnan Menderes University as it is a case for any higher education is
centralized and based on a nation-wide two-stage examination administered by the Student
Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) every year. The center was established in 1973 and
affiliated with the Council of Higher Education in 1981.The first stage of the examination, the
Student Selection Examination (ÖSS), consists of verbal and quantitative parts. Candidates
with scores between 105 and 120 points are offered a restricted choice of higher education
programs. Those with a minimum score of 120 are qualified for the second stage of the
examination, the Student Placement Examination (ÖYS), which consists of five parts: natural
sciences, mathematics, Turkish, social sciences and foreign language. Placement of
candidates is based upon their composite scores. These scores are calculated by taking into
account the scores of the first and the second stages of the entrance examination as well as the
high school grade-point averages, with different weights. Starting from the 1998-1999
academic year, the second stage of the examination has been abolished.
International students (except for ERASMUS students) applying to attend a full-time
undergraduate degree program are required to take the ‘’Examination for Selection and
Placement of İnternational Students” abbreviated as YÖS . YÖS examination has been
designed for foreign students intending to study in Higher Education Institutions in Turkey.
Based on the results of this examinaton, they can apply to Turkish Institutions of Higher
Education. The examination is given by Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). A
score of at least 40 from YOS is required. The result of the examination is valid for two years
(visit www.osym.gov.tr. for more information).
The medium of instruction in the university is Turkish but the students' knowledge of
Turkish will not be taken into consideration when placing the student. However, the students
(except for ERASMUS students) will have to take Turkish Lessons before they start to the
programme if their Turkish is not sufficent.

field of study. Information about the current fees can be obtained from the University
Registrar's Office. The fees are paid in instalments and the amount and dates for payment are
announced at the beginning of the academic year. The students who fail to make the tuition
payments at the specified times will be considered as unregistered and will be dismissed from
FEDU. Those students can be readmitted next semester only through the decision of the
administrative committee of their faculty/graduate school. All financial obligations must be
met prior to the completion of each academic year, otherwise students are not allowed to re-
register, receive a transcript, be granted a leave of absence or have a degree conferred. The
students have to re-register at the beginning of each semester or year as specified by the
related FEDU and ADU.
Attendance is mandatory. Conflict of hours with other courses is not an acceptable
excuse for non-attendance. Students' attendance is recorded by the instructor concerned. To be
eligible to take final examinations, students must have attended at least 70% of the theoretical
lessons and 80% of the practical lessons. Lack of attendance disqualifies a student from taking
Examinations and Assessment:
The students are required to take a final examination. Midterm examinations are also
given during each semester. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination
that they have not attended. The student is responsible for providing satisfactory evidence to
the instructor to substantiate the reason for absence.
Courses which do not require midterm and/or final examinations are determined by
FEDU concerned and the Registrar's Office is informed accordingly. Under these
circumstances, the semester grade is given by evaluating the work done throughout the
semester. Any field work and/or laboratory components may be evaluated separately. In this
