Michelangelo carved this out of a single piece of
marble over the course of about 3 years, and is
considered his masterpiece by many.
The original piece was placed in the Accademia
Gallery in Florence and replica was placed in it
original place in Piazza della Singoria.
There as been quite a debate about the
appropriateness of the statue and for a long period of
time only modified replicas were sold with a little fig
leaf to cover up is man hood. But movement has
occurred that urges all art to remain in its original
form.
Is based on the art form disengo which is based on
the divine creation and is considered the finest form
or art.
The body is not quite proportional, upper body
slightly larger, because it was thought to go into a
church where it was going to viewed from below.
There is some controversy pertaining to the biblical
reference, the statue is certainly uncircumcised
whereas the Biblical David was certainly
circumcised.
Different from previous depictions of David,
this piece is a depiction of David
contemplating the coming battle against
Goliath.
His hand is largely veined and the twist in his
body show a man making a very difficult
choice.
David is considered by many to be the main
hero of the Old Testament. Christians and Jews
alike recognize his importance.
The common theroy of his depiction cn be
seen in the book as Asher right before he
makes his most famous and controversial role,
much like David before his battle with Goliath.
