SCH4U - Atomic Spectra and Spectroscopy Lab Name: _______________________

Hypothesis: (3)
How do you think the spectra of different elements will differ and why?

Materials:

Spectroscope
Discharge Tube apparatus
Various discharge tubes

Procedure:

    1. Obtain a spectroscope. With the flat side to the LEFT, look through the spectroscope into natural light (i.e.
outside!). Record your observations in the rectangle (looks like spectroscope viewer, including numbers 4-7),
including order of colours, in colour!
    2. Using spectroscope, look at the overhead light (artificial light). Draw what you observe in space provided.
    3. Look at the 4 different discharge tubes of different elements/substances (Air, Hydrogen, helium, neon) provided
one at a time by your teacher. Record colours in space provided. Be sure that you are seeing just the colour of
the discharge tube through the spectroscope, with minimal natural/artificial light in your view. (i.e. light is
       behind you!!)
    4. Look at the final discharge tube (unknown substance) and record your observations.

Questions: (12)

   1. Why are our eyes able to see different colours of light through the spectroscope? (2)
   2. Compare the spectra of natural and artificial light you viewed through the spectroscope. Explain.(2)
   3. How does the discharge tube help you see the wavelengths of light through the spectroscope? (2)
   4. What is the identity of the unknown substance? Explain how you can prove your findings. (3)
   5. Describe how e-, energy levels and quantum mechanics applies to what you are able to see with a discharge
        tube and spectroscope. (3)
