What is Academic Advisement?
What is Academic:
1. Assisting you to understand and make decisions about General
Education and Title 5 requirements,
2. Assisting you to understand and make decisions about major
requirements,
3. Assisting you to understand and work within university policies and
requirements,
4. Assisting you to build a realistic educational plan to complete your
degree.
Advisement: What, When, & Where…
When should you seek advisement?
You should seek advisement when:
1. You have an advisement hold – 1st and 2nd semester freshmen,
EOP students, probation students, and students in many majors
have required advisement each semester
2. You have particular questions related to how to achieve a
desired academic goal,
3. You need assistance in understanding policies or requirements
and how they relate to your academic plan,
4. You have questions that you can’t answer yourself.

Graduation Plans
The university supports the
student goal of graduating within
4-5 years.
Each department and college has
prepared a published plan to
outline the course requirements a
student will need to complete to
graduate within this time frame.

Basic Academic Policies for Freshmen
Unfortunately, you can get into academic difficulty while you are adjusting to college.
It’s tough to balance classes, studying, work, family responsibilities, extra-curricular
activities and free time for friends and fun. High school routines don’t work well at the
University. You need to work hard and develop good study habits. Bad choices now can
have consequences later. Here are a few hints and rules you should pay attention to:
•You need a 2.0 GPA (a C average) to be in good academic standing.
•If you fall below a 2.0 either at CSUN or cumulatively, you will be put on
probation. You’ll stay on probation until both your CSUN and cumulative
GPAs are 2.0.
•If you are a freshman on probation, you will be disqualified from attending
CSUN for at least one semester if either your CSUN or cumulative GPA falls
below a 1.50 GPA.
Taking Control of your Education
Basic Academic Policies for Freshmen
•If your cumulative GPA falls below a 1.00 at any time except your first semester
freshman year, you will be disqualified from the University without being placed
on probation for one semester.
•You must pass or be exempt from all your developmental coursework in math and
writing during your first year at CSUN in order to continue a second year.
•You have a total of 28 units (that’s about 9 classes) of repeats. The first 16
provide “grade forgiveness” and the next 12 will average repeats with original
grades. Don’t waste them. Do your best the first time you are enrolled.
•A 3.5 GPA will earn you Honors. Strive for it.
All these rules are in the University Catalog. Check it out at
http://www.csun.edu/catalog/ Use the index to locate specific information.
Go to class, study hard and put forth your best efforts. You’re worth it.
