Matt Viator led the Cowboys to a Southland Confer-
ence football championship and into the NCAA Division I
championship in his first season as the McNeese State head
                     coach.
He took over the head job four games deep into the
2006 season, went 6-2 the rest of the way, won the SLC title
and put his team into the NCAA Divison I championship.
For his and the team’s efforts, Viator was named the
Southland Conference Coach of the Year, the Louisiana
Coach of the Year and he was a finalist for the Eddie Rob-
                     inson award.
He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his
very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a
                     30-27 win over Southern Utah.
The 14th head coach in McNeese history, Viator was
6-2 in his first season and 5-1 in league play, winning the
final five league games of the year.
Prior to his becoming head coach, Viator, who is a
graduate of McNeese, had served the university as offen-
sive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top Division
                     I offensive minds.
The Cowboys have ranked among the national
leaders in offense for five of the past seven years and the
university has also produced the Southland Conference’s
top offensive performer two of the last four seasons.
His offenses have led the league in scoring four
                     times.
Prior to joining the Cowboys he was one of the top
prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an 81-37 won-lost
record, winning one state crown and five league titles. He
joined McNeese in 1999 as linebacker coach and was made
offensive coordinator in 2000, the Cowboys leading the
league in both scoring offense and total offense that year.

Dr. Robert Hebert
University President
Dr. Robert Hebert is president of McNeese State University and is in his 21st year as such. He is
a native of Meaux, LA, is a graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and holds his Ph.D from Florida State.
The University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the
students who seek to secure their future through higher education. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as
Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes
later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university
separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University.
The university presently has an enrollment of 8,800 and has over 300 fulltime faculty members, half
of whom possess the doctoral degree. The university is located on 580 acres in south Lake Charles.
McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served as
the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was renowned
for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River, thus the school’s nickname of Cowboys.
• established in 1939, McNeese State has an enrollment of 8,800. The university is located in Lake
Charles, a city with a population of 80,000. The city is located in the Southwest corner of the state, 30
miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 30 miles east of the Texas-Louisiana border.
• McNeese’s schools of study are the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nursing, Education,
Business and the Graduate School. The school produces more teachers annually than any other
university in the state.
• In 1993, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction was awarded to Dr. Robert Olen Butler, then a member of
the university’s Department of Languages.
• Among former McNeese athletes who have gone on to professional stardom have been basketball’s
Joe Dumars (Detroit), baseball’s Ray Fontenot (New York Yankees) and Ben Broussard (Cleveland
Indians) and football’s Keith Smith (Detroit) and B. J. Sams (Baltimore).

                                Tommy McClelland
                                Director of Athletics (interim)
Tommy McClelland was selected in May to serve
as the university’s interim athletics director. He had
been employed as the school’s coordinator of athletic
                                events, sales and marketing.
