Leroy Neiman was born and raised
in Minnesota. He was born in Braham and later moved to St. Paul in the Macalaster-
Groveland and Frog town locations. While he grew up with a passion for art, he was not
recognized as an artist until after serving the country in World WarII. Leroy Neiman
attended the Art Institute of Chicago on the G.I. Bill after his military service. After he
completed his studies, he stayed on as a professor for ten years at the program. He met
Hugh Heffner, and the two became friends and struck a deal where Neiman would begin
to illustrate the magazine’s regular column on the party jokes pages. His association with
playboy continued on and off for more than fifty years. He created the famous and much
loved femlincharacter who is widely collected by art connoisseurs today. This launched
Neiman’s career and gave him a platform of public awareness and acceptance to move on
and do other things with his art that would also become embraced by the masses.

Starting in 1960, Neiman began to travel the world and paint famous scenery and people
partaking in leisure activities. The later paintings would go on to define his career and
make him a household name. He began covering a wide range of athletic events,
including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, Wimbledon, the World Series, the Ryder Cup, the
Master’s Golf tournament, the Kentucky Derby, and many more. He also captured night
life scenes with a special emphasis on jazz, gambling, and night life. Leroy Neiman
paintings also feature famous global landmarks including the Eiffel tower and the
Brooklyn Bridge. He also pained a number of street scenes of varying locations.

Many art critics believe Neiman’s extreme popularity among collectors is due to the
subject matter of his original artwork. The leisure activities, sports, scenery, and night life
imagery are extremely relatable. People want to hang up art in their home that they can
relate to and connect with on a personal level. Neiman’s subject matter allows individuals
to do exactly that. This relatable subject matter combined with his unique style has made
Neiman one of the most famous artists in the world today. While Leroy Neiman art is in
over 200 art museums all over the world, is major success has been his connection with
individuals and the collectability of his work for art lovers to have in their private
collections.
Leroy Neiman has also painted many celebrities. He works in varying mediums, but his oil
paintings are without a doubt his most famous original paintings. Leroy Neiman original
paintings as well as his many serigraphs are extremely sought after by art collectors.
