 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION
10
11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE SOUTHEASTERN
12 PIANO FESTIVAL AND TO CONGRATULATE ITS
13 PARTICIPANTS AND ORGANIZERS UPON THEIR TENTH
14 ANNIVERSARY OF CULTURAL SUCCESS.
15
16 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased
17 to learn that the 2012 Southeastern Piano Festival celebrated its
18 tenth anniversary from June 10 through June16, 2012; and
19
20 Whereas, the festival annually provides a high-level training
21 platform for young pianists, presents new and world-renowned
22 concert pianists and master teachers, advocates for new piano
23 music, and enables artists to explore the different roles the piano
24 plays on stage and beyond; and
25
26 Whereas, twenty of some of the best pre-college pianists took part
27 in a rigorous program that included daily lessons with University
28 of South Carolina piano faculty, master classes with guest artists,
29 and up to five hours of practice a day, which culminated with the
30 Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competition, adjudicated by
31 a distinguished panel of judges; and
32
33 Whereas, winners of the competition were rewarded with cash
34 prizes and the opportunity to perform with the South Carolina
35 Philharmonic, but music lovers benefited as well from the nightly
36 festival concerts performed by world-class pianists; and
37
38 Whereas, artists for the nightly performances included Leo Svirsky
39 and Sean Yeh, past winners of the Fraser Competition; George Li,
40   the fifteen-year-old winner of the Gilmore Young Artist Award;
41 Boris Slutsky, first prize winner of the Kapell International Piano
42   Competition and head of piano studies at the Peabody Institute;

     [5411] 1
1 Natalya Antonova, longtime Eastman School of Music professor
2 and former teacher at the Leningrad Conservatory and the Russian
3 Academy of Music in Moscow; and Alessio Bax, winner of the
4 Avery Fisher Career Grant; and
 5
6 Whereas, with five grand pianos on the Koger Center stage, the
7 festival opened on June 10th with a Piano Extravaganza Concert
8 featuring Morihiko Nakahara and the South Carolina
9 Philharmonic; the University of South Carolina piano faculty
10 Marina Lomazov, Joseph Rackers, Charles Fugo; special guest
11 Phillip Bush; Arthur Fraser International Competition winners; and
12
13 Whereas, the concert showcased its long-standing partnerships
14 with Rice Music House, Steinway & Sons, the Symphony League
15 of Columbia, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and the University
16 of South Carolina School of Music; and
17
18 Whereas, although not funded by the USC School of Music or any
19 state funds, the program has grown each year, bringing recognition
20 to the State of South Carolina and the USC School of Music; and
21
22 Whereas, the festival’s organizer, Marina Lomazov, associate
23 professor of piano at the USC School of Music, has established
24 herself as a world renown concert performer, and in June 2009, she
25 was named a Steinway Artist after a surprise ceremony that
26 unveiled a Steinway grand piano, an unprecedented and incredibly
27 generous gift to her from the citizens of Columbia; and
28
29 Whereas, the House of Representatives is grateful for the
30 outstanding contribution that Marina Lomazov and the generous
31 donors and sponsors of the Southeastern Piano Festival make to
32 the cultural life of South Carolina and look forward to enjoying the
33 fruit of their labors in the lives of young artists. Now, therefore,
34
35 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
36
37 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives,
38 by this resolution, recognize and honor the Southeastern Piano
39 Festival and congratulate its participants and organizers upon their
40 tenth anniversary of cultural success.
41
42 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
43 the organizers of the Southeastern Piano Festival.
44 ----XX----
