TechOne – Teaching Assistant (TA) Positions, Spring 2010
The TechOne Program is seeking applications for a number of Teaching Assistant
positions for the Spring 2010 semester. Each of these positions requires excellent
communication and teaching skills and the ability to work in a team-based
interdisciplinary environment. See postings below for specific qualifications.
Applications for Teaching Assistant positions in the following courses are being sought:
TECH 101W-3: Communication, Teamwork and Collaborative Process
TECH 114-3: Technology in Everyday Contexts
TECH 124-3: Design Thinking

How to apply
Forward your resume and cover letter by email to techone@sfu.ca. (Please
submit additional information if specified in the posting; TECH 101W requires
submission of a writing sample).
Complete the “Subject Box” of your email as follows: “TA Posting, Last Name,
and First Name”.
In the email or in your cover letter, submit a list of all the courses you are applying
for in order of preference. Note: Ensure you check your availability against the
schedule posting to ensure you are available during the course delivery times.
There are four TSSU categories of Teaching Assistants below. Please indicate which
category you are in for the term you are applying to be a Teaching Assistant and what
degree program you are in if applicable. All Teaching Assistants receive the same
remuneration per base unit. The difference between the amounts paid a Graduate
Teaching Assistant and other Teaching Assistants is an associated scholarship.
1. Graduate Teaching Assistant 1 (GTA 1)
A GTA 1 must be registered at Simon Fraser University for a master's degree or as a
qualifying student for a master's program.
2. Graduate Teaching Assistant 2 (GTA 2)
A GTA 2 must be registered at Simon Fraser University for a doctoral degree or as a
qualifying student for a doctoral program.
3. Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA)
A UTA must be registered at Simon Fraser University in a program leading to teacher
certification, a diploma or a bachelor's degree.
4. External Teaching Assistant (ETA)
An ETA is a person who is not otherwise a full-time employee of the University and
who is not a student in any of the categories referred to in 1, 2 or 3 above.
Selection process
1. Initial screening by the departmental committee for priority, as per the TSSU
Collective Agreement: http://www.tssu.ca/ca.html
i. SFU FAS Graduate Students with appointment priority in accordance with Article XII,
Section F.4 of the TSSU Collective Agreement
ii. SFU FAS Undergraduate students
iii. Graduate Students with priority from related programs in other Departments
iv. Qualified applicants who are non-students
2. Review and selection by the instructor(s).
Note: The instructor may conduct interviews if he/she wishes.
Departmental selection criteria includes:
Appropriate academic background for the courses offered
Employment experience in an area related to the courses offered
Previous teaching experience
Relevance of teaching assignment to the Teaching Assistant's professional development
needs and skills
Instructor requests
Teaching Assistant preferences
Accumulated base units

TECH 101W-3: Communication, Teamwork and Collaborative Process
Instructor: Janet McCracken
1 position: 1 @ 4.17 base units = 168 hours
Course schedule:
D100 – Friday 2:30-5:20pm
Note: Please ensure that you are available for the time shown.
Qualifications:
Strong writing and communication skills
Working knowledge of email communication
Strong background and/or interest in team building skills and cooperative learning
Familiarity with TECH 101W course requirements
Ability to critically evaluate assignments as well as to participate with in-class
activities and to help facilitate team activities
Writing sample must be included with application
TECH 114-3: Technology in Everyday Contexts
Note: There are two sections of TECH 114. Each section is taught by a different
instructor and has a different course delivery model.
D100 section of TECH 114
Instructors: James Phillips
3 positions: 1 @ 3.17 base units = 126 hours per position.
Course schedule:
Lecture: D100 – Thursday 10:30am-12:20pm
Labs:
LA01 – Thursday 12:30-2:20pm
LA02 – Thursday 2:30-4:20pm
LA03 – Tuesday 2:30-4:20pm
D200 section of TECH 114
Instructors: John Jones
3 positions: 1 @ 3.17 base units = 126 hours per position.
Course schedule:
Lecture: D200 – Monday, Wednesday & Friday 3:30pm-4:20pm
Open Labs:
OPL – MWF- 4.30pm-6.20pm – each TA will be responsible for the lab for approximately
2 hours/week.
Note: TAs will also be required to attend the lecture. Please ensure that you are
available for all the lecture/lab times shown.
Qualifications:
Familiarity with Web 2.0 technologies, innovations and culture
Familiarity with contemporary developments around open source, creative commons,
collaboration, social & participatory media (blogging, wikis, mobile devices) and
appreciation for historical and social implications of technology development and use
Excellent spoken and written English
Strong communication skills
Strong background and/or interest in team building skills and cooperative learning
Familiarity with TechOne program and course requirements
Ability to critically mark assignments as well as to participate with in-class activities
and to help facilitate online team and individual activities
TECH 124-3: Design Thinking
Instructor: Andrew Paulin and Janet McCracken
4 positions: 1 @ 3.17 base units = 126 hours per position.
Course schedule:
Lecture: D100 – Tuesday 10:30am -12:20pm
Labs:
LA01 – Tuesday 12:30 - 2::20pm
D102 – Tuesday 2:30 - 4:20pm
D103 – Thursday 12:30- 2:20pm
D104 – Thursday 2:30 - 4:20pm
