INTRODUCTIONS
• SFBT focuses on solutions • Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg initiated this therapy
GOALS
• To help members adopt an attitudinal and language shift from talking about problems to talking about solutions • To encourage members to choose the goals they want to accomplish in the group • To assist members in identifying their competencies and strengths that will lead to new possibilities
KEY CONCEPTS
• Positive orientation
• Being optimist – people have ability to construct solutions that can change their lives
• Focus on solutions, not problems
• Interested in what is possible and have little interest in dealing with the problem or exploring past issues
• Looking for what is working
• SFBT helps finding out what people are doing that is working and helps them in applying this knowledge to eliminate problems in the shortest amount of time possible
ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF A GROUP LEADER
• Facilitates the group by eliciting the perspectives, resources, and unique experiences of members • Creates opportunities for members to see themselves as competent and resourceful • Assists members in functioning as co-facilitators who support and encourage each other and keep focus on exceptions rather than problems
THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURE
• Raising questions • Asking clients to look for exceptions to a problem • The miracle questions; e.g. “If a miracle happened and the problem you have was solved overnight, how would you know it was solved, and what would be different?” • Scaling questions • Carrying out homework assignments
