                                    First Generation
                        • Walkthroughs were popularized and
                          institutionalized about ten years ago
                        • Some of you might remember these
                          issues: Are walkthroughs evaluative?
How do we collect and analyze data?
What should our walkthrough format be?
                        • Currently we focus on: Classroom
                          Environment, Classroom Management,
                          Instructional Strategies, Differentiation,
                          Rigor, etc.

                              Walkthrough Scenario
                        • The high school administration team
                          decides to walkthrough math classes.
                        • They consult their site or district pacing
guide to discover the Algebra II
                          teachers are covering Standard 8.0
                          this week.
                        • On the board we see:
                        “Standard 8.0: Solve quadratic equations
                          by completing the square.”
                                                              2

“How do we know if the students are
                          working on the right stuff?”

“Hmm. Well we know that they are
supposed to be working on standard 8.
                          I guess we can …”

                        8.0 Students solve and graph
                        quadratic equations by factoring,
completing the square, or using the http://calibration.ctap10.org
                        quadratic formula. Students apply
                        these techniques in solving word
                        problems. They also solve quadratic
                        equations in the complex number
                        system.

                        If the Answer is ‘yes’,
then ask if the instruction is the best it can be.
If the answer is ‘no’, it will not matter how wonderful the
instruction is, students will not be able to master the content.
http://calibration.ctap10.org can help with the first question.
