									                                            Global Business Travelers’ Airport Retail Trends, 2012-2013
London, October 4th, 2012 – According to the Canadean survey, the majority of travelers from Europe, North
America and Asia-Pacific shopped at airport retail stores in ‘duty-free’ and ‘duty paid’ shops respectively ‘3 times or
less’ in the last six months. Noticeable growth in passenger traffic and increased shopping while travelling is
emerging as a realistic platform for retailers and airport operators in generating additional revenue. Moreover, 52%
and 54% of male and female respondents respectively from Europe identified that their average shopping
frequency at duty-free shops was ‘3 times or less’ within the last six months. Additionally, 52% and 62% of
respondents from North America stated that they had spent at least 15 minutes per visit at duty-free and duty paid
airport retail stores respectively. Additionally 41% and 53% of respondents from Asia-Pacific region stated that they
had spent at least 15 minutes per visit at duty-free and duty paid airport retail stores respectively.

Of all European business travelers, 37% confirmed that they spend between ‘16–30 min’ per visit eating and
drinking in airport lounges, followed by 23% of respondents who recognized that they had spent ‘31–45 min’ on
food and beverage consumption at airport outlets. Similarly, of all Asia-Pacific respondents, 47% confirmed that
they spent between ‘16–30 min’ per visit eating and drinking in airport lounges, followed by 20% of respondents
who recognized that they had spent ‘31–45 min’ on food and beverage consumption at airport outlets. In addition,
69% of passenger respondents from North America contributed ‘less than 5%’ towards shopping at airport retail
stores within the last six months, while 19% confirmed that between ‘5%–15%’ of their overall shopping volume
was accomplished at airport retail outlets.

Overall, 49% of respondents spend between ‘US$51–US$150’ per visit at duty-free airport retail shops; while 32%
spend ‘less than US$25’ per visit. Similarly, 57% of European respondents spend between ‘US$25– US$100’ per visit
at ‘duty-free’ airport retail shops; while 33% spend ‘less than US$25’ per visit. In addition, 80% of North American
respondents less than 30 years of age claim to spend more than US$16 per visit at duty-free airport retail shops.

Of all North American respondents, 71% and 51% respectively spend ‘less than US$10’ each on ‘stationery and
cards’ and ‘printed media’ per visit. Moreover, 61% of respondents spend US$10–US$25 on ‘food and non-alcoholic
beverages’, while 46% of respondents spend ‘more than US$100’ on ‘luggage and leather goods’ per visit. Of all
European respondents, 62% and 45% respectively spend ‘less than US$10’ each on ‘printed media’ and ‘stationery
and cards’ per visit. Moreover, 52% of respondents spend US$10–US$25 on ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages’,
while 60% of respondents spend ‘more than US$100’ on ‘jewelry, watches and accessories’ per visit.
