The Secret Ingredient For Success
In 1932 an author named Napoleon Hill wrote an inspirational book called ‘Think and Grow Rich’
which is one of the most influential personal development books of all time.
One of the famous quotes from this book is:
There is one word in this quote that is more important than any other…the word believe.
For most of us it’s relatively easy to ‘conceive’ grand visions of financial wealth and prosperity but it
is another thing entirely to actually believe that these things are truly possible.
The secret ingredient for achieving success in every area of your life is – BELIEF
Before you achieve any goal, you must first truly believe that it is possible and that you will achieve
But this is easier said than done, which leads us to the important question -
"How do I develop a sense of genuine belief in myself and my goals?"
The most effective method for developing a sense of belief in yourself and your ability to reach your
goals, is to continually feed your mind with positive and uplifting material in the form of books, audio
CDs and seminars.
A good way to think of this is to look at the analogy of food and the impact it has on our bodies.
When we fill our stomachs with ‘junk food’, our body becomes unhealthy and incapable of operating
The same thing happens with our mind. When we fill our brain with ‘mental junk food’ our minds
become distracted and we tend to develop a negative view of the world.
Unfortunately our society reinforces this negativity by constantly bombarding us with negative
images and stories in the popular media.
So what’s the answer?
Compare these two scenarios:
Scenario #1: You wake up in the morning, switch on the TV and while eating your breakfast you
watch the latest reports of terrorist bombings, floods, crime and celebrity gossip. As you drive to
work you listen to talk back radio and the latest top 40 countdown. On the weekend you watch more
TV, read the newspaper and go out to watch the latest hollywood block buster.
Scenario #2: You wake up in the morning and while eating your breakfast, you read a few pages of
an inspirational book. As you drive to work, you listen to a motivational audio CD. On the weekend
you exercise, spend time with your friends and family and attend a motivational seminar.
Which scenario do you think is more conducive to achieving success?
The three most effective ways to develop the positive mindset that you need to follow through and
transform your dreams into reality are:
(1) To regularly read inspirational books
(2) To regularly listen to inspirational audio CDs
(3) To regularly attend inspirational seminars and talks
You’ll notice that I used the word ‘regularly’ in each of these sentences. Some people have the
mistaken belief that they should be able to transform their mindset by reading ONE book or by
attending ONE seminar.
They say things like, "Well, I went to that seminar and I’m not rich, so clearly the seminar doesn’t
This is like saying, "Well I went to the gym once and I’m not fit, so clearly the gym doesn’t work!"
In the same way that it takes time and consistent effort to develop a healthy body, it also takes time
and consistent effort to develop a positive success oriented mindset.
There are a lot of inspirational and motivational books available today and you will find a selection of
them at your local library or bookshop.
Superstars And Black holes
Have you ever noticed that there are two different types of people in the world?
Firstly there are the ’superstars’. Just like their celestial counterparts, superstars radiate warmth,
love and positive energy.
You can recognise a superstar by the following characteristics:
They are positive
They speak well of the people around them
They smile and laugh easily
They accept compliments graciously
They encourage and support those around them
They have clear goals and enjoy the process of working towards them
They take action
Then there are the ‘black holes’ of the world. These are the people who seem to suck the life and
light out of everything and everyone around them.
You can recognise a black hole by the following characteristics:
They generally have a negative view of the world
They regularly criticise others
They are quick to point out why other people’s plans will never work
They rarely smile or laugh unless they are laughing at someone else
They often do not have clear goals and instead just plod along from day to day
You probably know people who fit well into these two categories, but as with anything in real life,
these distinctions are not clear cut.
In reality, all of us are capable of being a superstar or a black hole depending on what we are
thinking and how we are feeling at any given moment.
This week I’d like to encourage you to take a look at how you are interacting with those around you
on a day-to-day basis. Are you a superstar – radiating warmth and positive energy to everyone you
meet, or do you tend to be a bit of a black hole?
The greatest thing about becoming aware of how you are acting is that you always have the choice
of how to behave in any given circumstance. Each and every day you can choose whether you are
going to be a superstar or a black hole.
Every time you communicate with another person you send a hidden attachment with your message.
Whether you are using e-mail, sending an SMS, writing a letter, or using the phone, this hidden
attachment is always present.
So what is this mysterious invisible attachment?
It is ENERGY!
Everytime you communicate with another person you send them a hidden attachment of energy.
This energy can take many different forms. It can be a positive, loving, caring, supportive or uplifting
energy attachment. Or alternatively it can be a negative, cynical, angry or impatient energy
Let me give you a real-world example:
Several weeks ago I ordered a product from one of my favourite authors. After waiting for the
product for a month I thought I should send an e-mail to check on my order.
Now I could have (but didn’t) send the following e-mail:
I ordered a copy of your product XYZ over four weeks ago and still have not received my CDs. My
order number is 1234736. Could you please ensure that my order is processed ASAP.
Can you tell that the above e-mail has an invisible attachment of negative energy?
Here is the e-mail I actually sent:
I just thought I’d contact you as I have not yet received my product XYZ.
I understand that it might take a little while to reach Australia but I thought I’d better e-mail you just in
case my order has slipped through the cracks.
If you could please check on the progress of my order and let me know when I can expect the CDs
that would be great!
BTW – below is my order confirmation e-mail which includes my order ID etc.
As you can see, the second e-mail achieves the same result but this time delivers an invisible
attachment of positive energy.
Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing radios are?
These days we tend to take technological innovations for granted, but imagine showing someone
from the middle ages a radio and explaining that you were able to receive a message from hundreds
of miles away – through the air. No doubt they would think that the radio was a magical device which
in fact it is!
This week I’d like to share with you a very important idea that can quite literally change your life if
you truly take it on board.
You see, each of us operates our own personal radio station 24 hours a day and we are constantly
broadcasting messages out into the world around us.
The messages we are broadcasting are the thoughts we think, and just like radio waves, our
thoughts radiate out into the world and are picked up by people who are tuned into the frequency of
the messages we are transmitting.
When you are thinking negative thoughts, you are sending out low frequency vibrations and these
negative thoughts are picked up by people around you who are tuned into this negative frequency.
This is where the old saying, "Misery loves company" comes from.
What this means is that if you continually think negative thoughts, you actually attract negative
people and negative events into your life. These people and events generate more negativity and life
seems to go from bad to worse.
Thankfully, this works with positive thoughts as well. When you think positive, life affirming thoughts,
you begin to transmit high frequency vibrations to the world around you.
When you do this on a consistent basis, you begin to attract positive people and events into your life.
It all begins with the thoughts you think and the vibrations you broadcast to the world around you.
How To Handle Rejection
On the way to reaching any worthwhile goal, chances are you will be faced with rejection. How you
deal with this rejection is often the deciding factor that will determine whether or not you reach your
Many people unfortunately take rejection very personally and view it as a reflection of their self
worth. For example, when you apply for a job and are not successful, it is easy to start thinking
things like, "I guess I’m just not good enough…"
In order to overcome the ‘rejection barrier’ and reach your most important goals, you must learn to
dismiss these negative thoughts.
But of course that is easier said than done!
In this weeks edition of Dare To Dream I’d like to share with you a simple idea that can help you
eliminate the negative feelings often associated with rejection.
Imagine for a moment that you are facing a very large wall. In front of you are a number of bright red
Behind one of these doors lies your goal. This could be your perfect job, your ideal partner etc. Your
job is simply to keep opening doors until you find the right one.
Now let me ask you a question…If you were single and you knew that your perfect partner was
waiting for you behind one of these doors, how much sense would it make to open one door and
then say, "I’m not good enough to find someone special so I’m not going to open any more doors…"
In this simple example it’s quite clear that the act of opening doors should have absolutely no
bearing on your personal self image. It is simply something you have to go through in order to find
what you are looking for.
If you can adopt a similar approach to dealing with rejection in the real world, you will become
Achieving your dreams is a numbers game. If you have the courage and determination to knock on
enough doors, you will find the right one.
Finding Time For Your Dreams
One of the most common complaints in the hectic world we live in is being "Too Busy!"
Often people are simply too busy dealing with day-to-day life to find the time to pursue their dreams.
When asked how things are going they reply, "Things are OK, we’re just plodding along…"
The danger of ‘just plodding along’ is that you may never find the time to pursue your dreams.
The most precious asset we have is not money or real estate…It is time.
Time is also the one thing in the world that is truly equitable. No matter how rich or poor we are, we
each get 86400 seconds each day. It’s how we spend this time that makes all the difference.
In today’s edition of Dare To Dream, I’d like to share with you a useful exercise that can help you
find the time you need to make your dreams a reality.
At the end of this article, you’ll find a link to download a worksheet that will help you complete this
exercise. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed and follow these steps carefully.
Using the worksheet below, identify all the activities you currently spend your time on. To do this,
cast your mind back over the last week and write down all the things you spent time doing.
Write down the key goals you are working towards at the moment. (If you worked through last
week’s ‘Blueprint For Success’ report, you should already have a written list of your most important
With your goals in hand, go through your activity list and place either a tick or a cross next to each
item. Use a tick if the activity is taking you closer to achieving one of your goals. Use a cross if the
activity is not directly taking you closer to achieving any of your goals.
For each item that received a cross, ask yourself these 2 important questions:
(1) Can I modify this activity so that it will take me closer to achieving my goals?
(2) Can I replace this activity with something that will take me closer to achieving my goals?
For example, a person with the above goals and activities could modify their ‘Catch train to city’
activity to become ‘Listen to language CDs on the train’.
They could also replace their second ‘Watch TV’ activity with ‘Family time with the kids’
By making these changes they would then be moving closer to achieving their goals of learning to
speak French and spending time with their kids
The Dream Cycle
The process of transforming your dreams into reality is the same regardless of what your specific
goals are. In this edition of Dare To Dream, I’d like to share with you The Dream Cycle..
There are six stages in the Dream Cycle and each one of them is very important.
Stage 1: Dream
Every man-made item you see around you began as the spark of an idea in the mind of a single
individual. The greatest architectural monuments, the most famous works of art, the most stirring
pieces of music, the most profound works of literature – they all began as a thought…an idea…a
We all have flashes of inspiration from time to time, but sadly, many people let these ideas fade
away. Successful people however are different. They realise how precious these ideas truly are and
they are not afraid to dream BIG dreams.
Stage 2: Plan
Imagine for a moment that you want to travel from your home to the supermarket. You get into your
car, drive to the nearest intersection and flip a coin to decide which way to turn. If it’s heads you turn
right, if it’s tails you turn left. At every intersection you come to you repeat this process of flipping a
coin and choosing a direction. How long do you think it will take you to reach the supermarket using
this navigational approach?
Clearly it is unlikely that you will ever reach your destination unless you know how to get there.
Unfortunately this is how many people navigate through life. They make random decisions from day-
to-day and hope that somehow they will reach their destination.
In order to make your dreams a reality you must take the time to formulate a plan which will act as
your ’street directory’ to guide you from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow.
Stage 3: Work Hard
Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that success is easy.
True success in any area of life involves focused and consistent hard work. A good way to gauge
your chances of achieving success is simply to count the number of hours each week that you are
actively working on achieving your goal. If you don’t put in the work – you won’t get the result.
Stage 4: Achieve
The feeling of achievement that comes from working hard and transforming your dream into reality is
one of the most satisfying feelings you can ever experience. This is why the Olympic Games are so
popular. Elite atheletes are a great example of people who are prepared to put in the hard work
necessary to achieve their dreams.
Stage 5: Celebrate
It is very important when you achieve a major goal to take the time to really enjoy and celebrate your
achievement. Don’t make the mistake of trying to launch straight into your next goal. Take a break
and enjoy your success. Go out with someone you love, do something you enjoy or buy yourself
something special. By doing this you will reinforce the positive energy associated with achievement
and be ready to move on to your next dream.
Stage 6: Give Back
The final stage of the Dream Cycle is to give something positive back to the Universe. If you’ve
achieved a monetary goal, give 10% of your profits to a worthy cause.
This idea of giving back does not only relate to financial goals however. For example, if you’ve just
lost 30 pounds and reached your ideal goal weight, share your knowledge and experience with
others. Tell them how you achieved your goal and encourage them to pursue their own dreams.
The Inner Circle
You will see that the inner circle of the Dream Cycle contains two items:
Visualising your goal in every detail is the best way to clarify your dream. It also helps you to create
your plan and keeps you motivated while you work hard to make your dream a reality.
Don’t be afraid to really enjoy your success and achievement. Celebration and giving back to the
Universe helps you create a positive mindset which in turn helps you achieve bigger and better
Where Is Your Focus?
Today I’d like to look at another aspect of focus and ask you to think about where your focus
There are three different types of focus:
(1) Past Focus
(2) Present Focus
(3) Future Focus
(1) Past Focus
People who have a past focus, spend most of their time analyzing events that occurred in the past.
They think about these events constantly and often relive past experiences over and over again.
They talk about "The way things used to be" or "What I used to do…" and often find it hard to let go
of specific incidents. The danger of focusing on the past too much is that you may end up actually
‘living’ in the past instead of the present.
(2) Present Focus
People who have a present focus spend all their time dealing with day-to-day activities. They do not
dwell on the past, nor do they think about the future. Instead they simply react to what life brings
them on a daily basis. They are always extremely busy ‘fighting fires’ but do not stop to think about
where they are really going.
(3) Future Focus
People who have a future focus understand that regularly thinking about and visualizing the future
you want is the crucial first step to making your dreams a reality.
To some extent we all reflect on our past and get caught up in day-to-day events, however, in order
to move ahead and achieve your dreams you must learn to shift your focus to your future on a
Your Escape Tunnel
In today’s pressure-filled society, it is easy to feel as though you are trapped inside ‘The System’.
Many people feel trapped by their job and their financial circumstances and find themselves yearning
This freedom involves not only financial freedom, but also the freedom to do what you want, when
you want, with who you want. Perhaps you can relate to the following picture?
In an effort to break free from ‘The System’, many people investigate different options for creating
passive income such as share trading, property investing, network marketing or starting a business.
Each of these options is like starting to dig an escape tunnel that can lead you to freedom from the
system as shown below.
But here is the biggest mistake mistake that people make…
They begin to dig their escape tunnel and initially make some progress, but then things start to get
tough, so they give up on their tunnel and decide to start digging a different tunnel.
For example, you buy an investment property and then have a bad experience with a tenant. At the
same time you hear about a ‘revolutionary’ new share trading system that is guaranteed to work, so
you stop digging your property investing tunnel and start digging a share trading tunnel.
This situation is sometimes known as ‘opportunity hopping’
The problem with opportunity hopping is that the end result is usually this:
You end up doing a lot of digging but remain trapped in ‘The System’ with multiple escape tunnels
that lead nowhere.
So what’s the answer?
The answer is FOCUS.
To achieve the freedom you desire, you must carefully review your options and then commit yourself
to focusing on the tunnel that you believe will give you the best chance of success.
This opportunity you choose is up to you and depends on your personality, your skills, and most
importantly – what you enjoy.
By committing to one tunnel and focusing all your energies on consistent digging, you will maximize
your chances of achieving the freedom you and your family deserve.
