DISTANCES. TI473
DAUR.
Daur
One Sindarin ‘league’. The Sindarin word for the Númenórean measure also called a lár. It described a
distance of 5,000 Númenórean strides, a distance almost exactly equivalent to three modern miles, or one
league. The name comes from the Elvish root meaning 'stop' or 'pause', because a marching army would
usually pause to rest after travelling a distance of one daur.

LÁR.
LAR.
Lár
The Númenórean ‘league’. A measure of distance devised and used by the Númenóreans, also known by
the Sindarin name of a daur. The word originally meant 'stop' or 'pause', and indicated the point where a
marching column would break for a rest. The lár was defined as 5,000 rangar, or 'strides', and conveniently
corresponds to a distance of almost exactly three miles, or one league.

GREAT ARMAMENT. The vast armada built by Ar-Pharazôn between 2A3310 and 3319 for the assault
on Valinor. The flagship was Alcarondas. When Sauron succeeded in persuading Ar-Pharazôn to attack
Valinor, the King set about building the greatest fleet that had ever been built. While the shipwrights were
building and the arms being prepared, the Valar sent storms and omens out of the West, but the
Númenôreans worked on. At last, after nine years, the Armament was finished, and Ar-Pharazôn had a fleet
that filled the seas west of Númenor. He boarded his flagship Alcarondas (the 'Castle of the Sea') and raised
the signal to begin. Trumpets rang out throughout the fleet as it set sail into the West. There were so many
ships that they surrounded Tol Eressëa completely, and they came at last to the shores of Valinor itself. But
the Great Armament was for nothing: by the power of Eru the fleet was drawn back out to sea and down
into the abyss, as was the island of Númenor where it had been built.

GREAT JOURNEY. Great Journey of the Eldar.
The journey of the Elves from the eastern regions of Middle-Earth to Aman. This journey lasted many
years and was led by the Vala Orome. The hosts of the Elves were in three sections, the Vanyar, who came
first, the Noldor, who were the second, and the Teleri, who were the greatest numbers, and many left the
journey and remained in Middle-Earth, especially among the Teleri.

-ELF-MARCH.
-FARING FORTH.
From Tolkien Gateway
The Faring Forth is part of a theory on surrounding the Dagor Dagorath. The Faring Forth would occur
when Tol Eressëa would be drawn back across the sea to Middle-earth. The elves would then march across
the land seeking their lost kindred, and asking for aid of men.

PHANTOMS.
Phantoms
Beings of illusion
Forms or ideas created through magical means to trick the unwary. In The Silmarillion, Sauron is called
'master of shadows and of phantoms' (Quenta Silmarillion 18) and he used them several times to trap his
enemies. He discovered and destroyed Barahir's outlaw band through the use of a phantom, and they also
played a part in the enslavement of the Nine Ringwraiths. Though Sauron had great power to create
phantoms, they were not unique to him: Saruman, too, could produce phantom forms. For example, at the
edge of Fangorn Forest, Aragorn and his companions briefly encountered a mysterious old man, who
appears to have been a phantom sent by Saruman.

SPIRITS. Spirits
The essences of living beings.
"...slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits
shall come then to Mandos."
From the Doom of Mandos
Quenta Silmarillion 9
Of the Flight of the Noldor
In Tolkien's cosmology, rational living creatures such Elves and Men were composed of two vital elements:
the hröa and the fëa. The hröa was the material body, and the fëa was the immaterial essence, a concept
translated by the English word 'spirit'.
After death, a spirit would be called to the Halls of Mandos in Valinor (though that summons could be
refused). Once there, the fates of the spirits of Elves and Men were very different. The fëar of Elves were
bound to Arda until it came to its ultimate end, and even after death they could be re-embodied in the West.
For Men, though, there was no return within the confines of the World, and their spirits set out from Arda
on a journey to an unknown destiny.
The Valar and the Maiar had spirits, too, but of a different nature to the Children of Ilúvatar. Indeed, from a
certain perspective these beings simply were spirits, though they were able to appear in an embodied form -
called a fana - at any time they wished.

STANDING SILENCE. Standing Silence
Moment of silence before meals. The Standing Silence was a custom of the Dunedain who were the
descendants of the Men of Numenor. Before eating, the Dunedain stood and faced westward toward the Sea
where Numenor had been and toward the Undying Lands beyond.
Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee took part in the Standing Silence with Faramir and the Rangers of Ithilien
at Henneth Annun on March 7, 3019. The Standing Silence was also observed at the feast following
Sauron's defeat at the Field of Cormallen on April 6.

THREE PRAYERS. Three Prayers
The prayers of the Men of Westernesse (Númenóreans) to Eru Iluvatar.
Three times each year, the King of Westernesse would lead his people to the summit of the Meneltarma,
and on each of those occasions a ritual prayer would be said. The Three Prayers took place at the beginning
of spring, at the height of midsummer and at the end of autumn, and were known respectively as the
Erukyermë, the Erulaitalë and the Eruhantalë. By tradition, at the time of each of the Three Prayers, three
great Eagles, known as the Witnesses of Manwë, would hover over the King and his subjects.
The Three Prayers were observed without fail by the early Kings of Westernesse, but fell into disuse as the
party of the King's Men established their power. The first King explicitly said to have abandoned the
Prayers altogether was Ar-Gimilzôr, the twenty-third ruler of Westernesse.
