Narrow votes on ACTA in ITRE, JURI and LIBE committees highlight the need for
further clarification on ACTA in the context of vote in INTA Committee on 21 June 2012
Dear Member of the European Parliament,
As you probably know, the vote results on ACTA in the ITRE and JURI committees on 31
May 2012 were close and there were important abstentions in the LIBE committee vote as
In our view, these narrow votes show a split in the European Parliament on how to proceed
with ACTA. They also confirm that there is large support for further clarifications on the
The European Parliament is under no procedural or institutional obligation whatsoever to
rush its eventual decision.
After all, the Treaty is not going anywhere within the EU without your consent, so why not
seize the opportunity to get the clarifications you need before proceeding with a decision (i.a.
from the court of justice of the European Union on the conformity of ACTA with fundamental
Europe needs a united voice to speak up for its knowledge-based economy, its creative
undertakings and its competitive IP-reliant industries, SMEs and jobs, to defend them against

Given the importance of ACTA for Europe's international position, its economy and jobs, it is
worth taking the time to address any remaining points of concern before proceeding with a
vote in plenary, either by receiving the clarifications requested from the Commission, or/and
waiting for the opinion of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Please do no reject ACTA prematurely.
