FACULTY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY __________________________________________________________ DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE Anticipated Permanent Full-Time Position (Tenure-Track) Assistant Professor Starting mid-August 2008 THE UNIVERSITY: Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University system. Located in the world-renowned Sonoma County wine country, less than fifty miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students with 500 faculty. The University is organized into six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. There is also an interdisciplinary (Hutchins) program of liberal studies. The University offers bachelor’s degrees in 42 fields and master’s degrees in 15. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Computer Science (CS) is one of the nine departments in the School of Science and Technology. The Department offers a B.S. and a Minor in Computer Science. The Department strives to provide students with a broad, fundamental background in computer science which will enable them, upon graduation, to work in industry, pursue graduate study, or both. The CS Department was founded in 1982. It currently consists of 5 full-time permanent tenured or tenuretrack faculty, 6 adjunct faculty, and approximately 100 undergraduate Computer Science majors. The overall University student population and the number of Computer Science majors are expected to increase in the next few years. The Department maintains its own laboratory facilities, which include student labs of G4s running the latest OSX, of PCs running Linux and Windows, Unix servers, facilities for embedded systems and networking. All students have access to many computers on campus in laboratories administered by the University’s IT. Sonoma State University is surrounded by leading industrial organizations in telecom, biotech, and other computer and technological fields. Prospective applicants are encouraged to read the Department’s and related information at http://www.cs.sonoma.edu/ THE POSITION: The CS Department is seeking a highly motivated teacher/scholar to teach undergraduate courses in computer science. CS faculty are expected to teach courses in computer science, with an assignment each semester of approximately 12 weighted teaching units of lectures and labs, and to develop, modify and implement computer science curricula. The selected individual will be committed to teaching in a liberal arts setting, and will maintain scholarly and creative activity in support of the mission of the university, including research and scholarly publications. In addition to teaching and scholarship, all faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve the campus-wide and public communities. QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, or related field. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. ABD’s will be considered. Appointment may be made at the rank of lecturer for candidates who are ABD and are anticipating completion of the doctorate no later than December 19, 2008. At that time, and contingent on a successful performance review, the position will be converted to tenure-track. Candidates must also have demonstrated ability to teach at the University level to a diverse student population. Preference will be given to applicants who can teach courses in the areas of network, internet, and web technologies. Preference will also be given to applicants with a demonstrated ability in writing contract and grant proposals and in securing external funding for research and development projects. To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship and research; creative achievement and professional development; service to the University, and public service to the community. Although tenure can be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that “the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credential service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above Associate Professor.
