The Prize I nerary:
Day 1 - “Day in the life of a Berber”
Take an early morning flight from Gatwick to Marrakesh on Easyjet. On arrival in Marrakech you’ll be met by your
experienced tour leader who will be with you for the dura on of your trip.
You head out of colourful Marrakech and journey into the heart of the High Atlas Mountains (approx 90 minutes) to
the Imlil valley. Your day will be based in the village of Aguersioual, a tradi onal village of around 40 houses built into
the mountainside with fantas c views of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain at 4167 meters.
During the a ernoon you will learn about tradi onal cooking techniques, preparing a tagine (which you’ll get to eat
later) and also tradi onal bread making. You’ll also learn about the important role of subsistence agriculture, the crops
they grow, the way they rear and look a er their livestock and the importance of water management in this arid area.
The day will also provide a fascina ng insight into the close community of the Berber people and the different roles
men and women play in this ght knit community.
Please note this is a unique insight into a tradi onal way of life, far removed from the tourist trail. You will be guests of
your ground agent’s family who live in the village.
Mid a ernoon you walk up the valley to stay overnight in the village in a tradi onal gite (1 night). A gite d'étape
consists of a village house with simple dormitory rooms each with space for approximately 8 people. Each room is
furnished in tradi onal Berber style with low couches (which can be used as beds), tables, carpets and cushions. On
warm nights it's generally possible to sleep out on a terrace under the stars. Communal facili es consist of a couple of
showers and toilets.

Day 2 - Tizi-n-Tichka Pass You head back to the road and pass through green valleys
with olive groves. You cross the Atlas Mountains at the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2260
meters above sea level) into the barren slopes of sha ered rock on the southern side
of the pass. You will witness how the forces of nature have helped shape these
mountains offering an insight into plate tectonics and fold mountain forma on. You
stop for a picnic lunch near the summit and then con nue onto Ouarzazate. Total travelling me approximately 5
hours including stops. The hotel at Ouarzazate has a lovely pool for some relaxa on at the end of a hot day.
Day 3 – “Into the desert and under the stars” You con nue your
journey from Ouarzazate through the lush Draa Valley – a strip of
intense cul va on along the Oued Draa, a river formed from the melt
waters of the Atlas Mountains. The Draa Valley is home to more than a
million date palms, and you’ll pass numerous kasbahs (for fied houses)
along the way. A er approximately four hours, you reach the desert
town of Zagora - last major se lement before the Sahara proper. From
Zagora you drive an hour to Bougeorn, where you’ll meet your
camelteers and begin your camel safari. You’ll be travelling
approximately 4 hours by camel, before se ng up camp. Your guides
and staff will prepare tradi onal Moroccan fare—hopefully under starry
desert skies. Accommoda on will be in very simple large Bedouin-style
tents, but the op on to sleep out under the stars is always a possibility, and hard to resist. With luck your camel
drivers and camp staff may sing and play drums to round off the magical atmosphere of the evening.
Day 5 – “Journey to Ait Benhaddou” This morning you leave the camp early on your camels for a short ride and then
it’s back on the bus for the journey back along the Draa valley to the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou, probably the best-
preserved for fied Kasbah in the whole of Morocco. With its drama c walls of red earth, slit windows and crumbling
towers, it is a magnificent example of a tradi onal stronghold. Chosen as a loca on for Hollywood films such as
Lawrence of Arabia, Jewel in the Nile and more recently Gladiator, Ait Benhaddou sits upon a lo y pinnacle of rock
overlooking a river. A er an interes ng tour of the Kasbah you’ll have me to relax in the hotel’s pool before dinner.
Day 6 – To Marrakesh This morning you journey back over the mountains to Marrakech for a short walking tour of the
city which takes in the main sights and the sprawling souks. Here individual trades and cra s are concentrated
together in a single street or area, so all the shoemakers are next to each other, as are the jewellers, the po ers, the
weavers, and so on. This is the best place in Morocco to sharpen your bargaining skills and you're almost certain to be
tempted by some of the extraordinary merchandise on display - even if it's only a trinket or a packet of exo c spices.
A er your fill of haggling, we’ll transfer from the bustle of Marrakech back to the airport for your flight home.
