Dear Parent/Guardian,

I am writing to you regarding the Curriculum Day which will take place on Friday, March 16th.
The timetable will be suspended on this day and all students will have the opportunity to
participate in an academic and skills based activity or trip which is linked to the curriculum.
This day will allow for a more coordinated approach to the organisation of activities and trips
across the school.

Year 7 students will be involved in a Day of Pirates or a trip to Shere Village. The activities and
trips available are listed below. Different departments will organise each trip/activity and the
maximum number of places available are indicated in the brackets. Please note that to meet
the costs associated with all our school trips, parents are asked to make a voluntary
contribution to cover the cost. However, where there are insufficient voluntary
contributions to make the trip/activity possible, then it will be cancelled. Cheques (or
cash) should be made payable to the Hollyfield School and should be attached to the
reply slip. Your daughter/son will also have to complete the attached medical form if they are
intending to go on a trip. Please return the slip (below), cheque and medical form in a
sealed envelope to student services with the student’s name and form group written
clearly on the outside of the envelope. All forms must be returned by Wednesday January
25th.

 Shere Village trip - a Geography fieldwork focus (90 students) - COST = £10
 Pirates and amazing Science – circus of activities involving English, Maths and Science
    (90 students) - COST = £3

Please indicate your preferences by ticking the relevant box for the activities/trips below 1 =
first choice; 2 = second choice and return this slip to the Student Services Reception by
Wednesday, 25th January at break time and lunchtime.

Pirates Day

Science
During the Science Pirate day you will undertake three activities:
o Ask a Pirate – one eye or two?
o Make custard cannon balls
o Mysteries of the Cursed Treasure – using information from a pirate alchemist to decipher the
metals making up the cursed treasure and what they will look like after years under the sea.

English
You will use your creative writing skills and imagination to explore the world of pirates. Some of the
exciting activities include making a pirate treasure map, discovering facts about famous pirates of
the past and writing an adventure story in order to gain your very own Pirate Licence! Your work will
then be displayed for all to see...

Maths
You will investigate probability space and use your knowledge and understanding of theoretical
probability to devise strategies for finding the best solution for surviving a band of marauding pirates.
Ahoy me maties!

Shere Village Trip
The Geography Department is running a Year 7 field trip to the village of Shere, near Guildford in
Surrey which was the setting for the critically acclaimed Hollywood block buster "The Holiday"
starring Jack Black and Cameron Diaz.

The field trip will focus on geographical investigation and primary data collection. We will explore
concepts of settlement and land use, rural life, and environmental impacts, and introduce students to
a range of geographical field work techniques including map and navigation skills.
