    How DO We Learn?

   We learn best if we are actively not passively engaged

   Boredom sets in after 10 minutes of routine thinking, impeding learning

   Multisensory and especially visual stimuli enhance learning

   Repetition is needed for 10 years for complete learning mastery

   The brain rewires its learning pathways at age 3-5 and 13-15

Implications for Education

   Make it relevant
   Make it individual
   Don’t make it boring
   Make it active
   Make it multi-sensory
   Especially make it visual
   Infuse it with technology
   Start earlier than kindergarten
   Repetition with feedback makes for mastery
   All of this applies to teachers as well as students

      Conclusion: Technology enabled inquiry based learning, as exemplified
          by Project Based Learning, is a more effective way to educate

Napa Learns Charter

Facilities and Technology               Deploy appropriate computers and internet access to all students in Napa County

Curriculum Development and Delivery     Investigate, evaluate and introduce innovative curriculum that allow students to learn
                                        at their own pace and in their own mode of thought
                                        Build on the student centric, project based learning approach developed at New
                                        Technology High and SC21 to educate our students in this new mode of business

Professional Development                Provide teachers with professional development to enhance their role as mentor and
                                        guide in this collaborative learning model
Philanthropic Fund Raising              Raise at least $ 1 Million annually in philanthropic funds for these initiatives
Grant Solicitation and Administration   Solicit and administer at least $ 1 Million annually in education grants to support our
                                        efforts
Performance Measurement                 Monitor and report on student performance to grant and philanthropic funding sources
                                        Use these results to modify the curriculum and delivery to meet our preparedness goal
Competitive Ranking                     Identify 10 best of breed programs and rank our efforts objectively against them
Community Advocacy                      Communicate our efforts to all constituencies in our community

Napa Learns 2010-2011 Project Direction
   Continue SC21/PBL Implementation in NVUSD ($2M in grants) and beyond
   Continue roll out of ST Math curriculum to 14 K-5 schools and 1,700
    students ($ 200K in grants)
   Create a laboratory for testing and measuring new, technology assisted
    curriculums valley wide in multiple environments
   Develop valley wide performance measurement system for 21st century
    learning progress (e.g. College and Work Readiness Assessment test)
   Implement a teacher and student videotaping and peer review program
   Develop a Pre-K parent and child education program and tools
   Engage national foundations and Sacramento in providing help to
    implement these efforts
   Push for exemption from state mandated curriculum in the county in
    exchange for measuring new curriculum effectiveness
