Welcome to the Christmas addition of the Wokingham and Bearwood riding club newsletter. It has been
another busy year with more members than ever competing for the club. The Committee would like to thank
all those who have competed and attended clinics this year. A special thank you to those who have helped at
events without this help we could not continue to run so many events. Please join me in welcoming all our
new committee members and in thanking those who have stood down this year. Special thanks to Diana,
Helen, and Gemma for the use of their schools for riding club clinics.

2010 - What a Year for Wokingham and Bearwood Riding Club

Members of Wokingham and Bearwood Riding Club have had a year to celebrate. The riding club with over
250 members from all over Berkshire and North Hampshire have gone from strength to strength this year.
Membership numbers continue to rise as local riders from all backgrounds join the fun and successful team.

Numerous WBRC teams have won at a regional level and the club has had members compete at every
national British Riding Club championship in 2010! Riders have represented the club at national level at all
levels in dressage, show jumping, horse trials, hunter trials and dressage to music. Particular highlights have
 Sarah Thomas – National Dressage to Music Champion and Royal Windsor Horse Show Rider Test
Champion where Sarah won a once in a lifetime trip to the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky
 Gemma Sayers – National Prelim Dressage Champion
 Liz Connolly – 3rd in Medium Dressage National Championships
 Rebecca Friend – 3rd in National Rider Test Championships
 Rebecca Champions – National Junior Rider Test Champion
 Team 3rd at National Prelim Dressage Championships
 Team 6th at National Junior Dressage Championships
 Team 6th at National Rider Test Championships
 Team 5th at National Junior Rider Test Championships
 Team 5th at National Festival of the Hunter Championships
 Team 5th at National Style Jumping Championships
 Team 5th at National Junior Style Jumping Championships
 Team 11th at National Junior Horse Trails Championship
 Team 16th at National Senior Horse Trails Championship

Competitions are not the only thing that made WBRC such a success the (fifteen strong) committee
organised a very wide range of training and social events. Regular training sessions have been held for all
levels on the flat and jumping with a wide range of with instructors such as Andrew Gould, Robert Pickles,
David Sheerin, Lisa Oram, Nicola Greenwood and Tracey Lawson. Weekend training camps have also been
very popular being held at Skylands in Dorset and at Aston-Le-Walls. And 2010 has also been a fun year for
other activities including rides in Windsor Great Park, days at the horse spa, riding the Merlin the
mechanical horse, summer BBQ’s and the annual quiz night.

2011 is looking as equally an exciting a year for WBRC. David Sheerin, member and chief instructor of
Wellington Riding, has been chosen to represent WBRC at an international level on the Rural Riders horse
trials team. Sophie Callard, a junior member who has represented the club nationally is one to watch as she
continues to move up the eventing levels. And with training and events planned every weekend, WBRC
aims to beat the success of 2010!

Membership This year’s membership is due in January we hope you will wish to continue with your
membership. If so please complete a membership form and return to Sarah Gee who will be happy to receive
them after Christmas.

                                         Flu vaccination certificates

For those of you wishing to compete for the club please remember there is zero tolerance on Flu vaccination
certificates. Should your vaccination certificate not be acceptable, then if you wish to get it back in date
again – the initial course of flu vaccinations will have to start again. The horse will need to have the first two
flu jabs with between 21 – 92 days between these, and then is allowed to compete again. As jabs cannot be
given within 7 days before a competition – it takes at least a month to start a horse again in order for it to be
got quickly back in date for the certificate to be acceptable. The third jab must not be forgotten at 150 – 215
days after the second one, or the certificate will go out of date again. After the third jab, a flu booster must
be given within a year every year.
When your vet gives vaccination, please double check that they have written the date clearly and that each
line is stamped and signed by them – otherwise the certificate will not be accepted. If you have transferred
all or any records into your passport, it is essential that you keep the old card alongside the passport – as this
probably is the record of the initial course of three jabs where the vet would have signed and dated each line.
Diagram of horses marking must be correct and we can only enter horses under the name on the vaccination

CHANGES FROM 2011 To the FLU Vaccination RULES.

For horses who started their flu vaccinations after 1st January 2006 there are no changes.

For horses who started their flu vaccinations before 1st January 2006 rules change as follows:
1. Only required to have had the initial two injections, first one followed by one 21 - 92 days after.
2. Third one of course is not required.
3. If 1 and 2 are in date then it is a requirement that the last 5 flu boosters have been given within a year of
each other.

You can check using the BRC vax checker, where you fill in the dates for your horse. This can be found
on the British Riding Club site, under BRC rule book and then will see where it says to click on the vax

The year is off to its usual ‘full on’ start with events running February 6th, 12th a and 13th, so we will
be actively scouting for willing helpers to join in and support the club.

Feb 6th is the dressage qualifier at Slapton, Bucks which may be too far away for many of you to help out –
but if we don’t ask; we’ll never know! So shout out if you fancy a day trip out!

When do we need your help?
Helpers for Sunday February13th to join us at BCA (Berkshire College of Agriculture at Burchetts Green,
just off M4 J8/9), for Indoor Novice Show Jumping Qualifier.

Also if we get any one through to round 2 of the Royal Windsor Horse Show qualifier is the day before on
Saturday 12th again at BCA – so we may need extra hands on this day too!

3rd July (we like advance planning) – an important diary date - the outdoor Show Jumping qualifier for Area
6. It will take place at Wellington and we’ll be looking for lots of competing members and even more

How much time do you need to give up?
Just a half day—morning or afternoon.

We will need two people per team so the more helpers the merrier!

What’s in it for me?
We want you to enjoy being a helper! You will certainly get to feel the pace and camaraderie of competing,
pick up useful tips and hints yourself and of course be in close quarters with judges, riders and officials.

What will I be doing?
If you have a particular interest or activity on the day—let us know in advance. For example you may want
to sit up ‘close and personal’ with the dressage judge and hear firsthand what he /she thinks of each rider
and horse combination. In which case we would put you down as a judge’s writer.

Alternatively if you want to burn away some unwanted Christmas calories consider assigning yourself onto
the jump arena party!
If you ever fancied walking around with clipboard and pen—score collectors or ring steward will be the job
for you!

There is something for everyone! So, be heard, be seen and please—offer your help if you can. If you
aren’t yet convinced please remember that helping earns members points, and points mean prizes – in the
form of our much coveted “Jolly Good Egg” trophy up for grabs each year!

Your annual membership form will remind you of our need for helpers without which we would struggle to
exist as a club.

To add your support contact Debbie on 0771 325 2104 or by email: debbiegpercy@hotmail.com
Thank you!

                                              Wine and Wisdom
Hello Everybody,

As the new WBRC Social Co-ordinator, it falls upon me to announce this year’s Wine & Wisdom Evening (one of my
personal favourites) at the traditional venue of the Arborfield Village Hall on the 19th February 2011. It will follow
the usual format of questions (“non horsey” for those non horsey partners and friends!), and a fantastic cold buffet
supper. We will provide nibbles at the tables, the questions and a really good evening. Please bring your own drinks.

You can make up a team or just come along a join a team on the night. Tickets will be £12.00 per person. The Hall is
open from 7:00pm and we will finish around 11:00pm.

For tickets, please contact me, Noel, on noelattride@btconnect.com or on 07787 507400.

Please note that as agreed at the AGM the club will no longer automatically be funding Championships.
Please check on championship dates prior to volunteering for a team. If you wish to compete in a qualifier
but do not want to go to the finals please let the Team manager know. So that they can ensure that you are
put in a team with other members not wishing to go to the finals.

Senior & Junior Teams - Intermediate (1.00m)
Senior only teams - Open (1.10m +)
The Area 6 Horse Trials qualifier will be run on Saturday 21st May 2011 at Snowball Farm. I am looking
for team members who would like to compete at any of the above levels to represent WBRC. Please let me
know ASAP if you are interested in taking part competitively or even just for fun so that teams can be
created to represent the riders' interests. I would also like a copy of results for each combination of horse and
rider in all disciplines for 2010 and 2011 so that teams can be created fairly. If you are interested in the
more competitive side, the Horse Trials Championships are run as a 2 and 3 day event at Aston Le Walls,
which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all our past qualified teams and individuals. The championship
courses are usually challenging and up to height. Training clinics will be organised at various venues
including Snowball Farm to prepare for the competition; for 1 of which, please refer to Gemma Sayers'
series of clinics. Please keep watching the website for additional training series with alternative instructors.
Copies of the dressage tests will be emailed to you as soon as I am aware of your interest.
