                SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES NEW APPOINTMENTS
          MAXWELL ANNOUNCES SEVERAL NEW MEMBERS OF HIS EXECUTIVE TEAM

       Incoming Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell announced during today’s Board of
Education meeting the following personnel appointments:

Margolies, who holds bachelor’s and law degrees from American University, arrives with
extensive experience in school and legal administration. He joins AACPS after serving for 11
years as the Montgomery County Public School Board’s Staff Director. As the new Chief of
Staff, Margolies will join the Superintendent’s Executive Staff and have direct oversight of the
Public Information Office, the Division of Legal Services for School Services and Policy
Hearings and the Division of Accountability, Assessment, and Research. He will also serve as
the representative to the government and business community and supervise interactions and
communications between the Superintendent and Board of Education, among other duties.
Margolies is expected to begin effective August 14, 2006.

Pelham, who earned her master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from West Virginia
University in 1973 and holds an Administrator II Certification, comes to AACPS after a career
that spans more than 15 years with Montgomery County Public Schools. She began her
career there as an assistant principal in 1989 and rose through the ranks to hold various
senior administrative positions before becoming Assistant to the Community Superintendent,
Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, and Watkins Mill Clusters in 2004.

With AACPS, Pelham will become Assistant Superintendent for Strategic Initiatives with oversight
of school monitoring, evaluation, alternative education, student discipline, student services, and
volunteer services, as well as oversee the school system’s development office and Central Office
building management, among other duties. She is expected to begin effective July 27, 2006.

Dr. Pish, who received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of
Maryland-College Park in 1990, comes to AACPS from Baltimore County Public Schools, where
she served as Director of Accountability, Research, and Testing. She will begin effective July 27,
2006.

Dr. Arlotto, who received a doctorate in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from
George Washington University in 2002, joins AACPS after spending six years at Montgomery
County’s Wheaton High School as an Assistant Principal and Principal.

“I am pleased to have these talented professionals join our school system because I am not only
familiar with their abilities, but I am confident in their judgment,’’ Maxwell said. “I believe their
skills will blend well with the talented professionals we already have within our school system. It is
important to put our team in place now so that we will be ready to face the challenges of the new
school year.”

A 30-year veteran school administrator, Liverman will assume the Acting Deputy
Superintendent’s position effective July 13, 2006. Liverman, who received his master’s in
Administration & Supervision from Bowie State University in 1985, will have oversight of school
system operations, as well as direct the implementation of instructional plans, policies, and
programs, among other duties.

Whittington, who received a master’s degree from Bowie State University in 1991, returns to
AACPS as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services. From 2003-2005, she served as
Director of Curriculum for AACPS before moving to Baltimore County Public Schools last year as
Director of School Improvement.

Dr. Washington, who earned his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Philadelphia’s La Salle
University in 1998, moves from Acting Coordinator of Student Discipline & Safety to Director of
Student Discipline & Safety. Dr. Washington has worked for the school system for 23 years.

“As a new Superintendent, it is crucial for me to evaluate the staff and to ensure that highly-
qualified professionals are in the right places,’’ Maxwell said. “The promotions of these dedicated
employees speaks well of them and their career contributions to our school system. It is also
gratifying to see the return of Ms. Whittington to our system. Her return speaks volumes of how
much she loves our county and how much we value having her back. I am confident that all of
these professionals will be able to continue to provide our students, teachers, and administrators
with excellent support and guidance.”
