Vaser® Liposuction Explained By Karen Mihalik, MD Vaser® is a type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), but is of a newer generation than the original UAL. Introduced by Sound Surgical Technologies, LLC, in 2002, Vaser® is considered an improvement on the older version of UAL in terms of recovery and post-operative pain. UAL was itself an improvement on the traditional method of liposuction, which had to be performed under general anesthesia and required a long recovery period. The Vaser® technique uses a probe that emits sound waves to target and liquefy pockets of fat for quick removal. Since Vaser® is a more refined technique than those employed in the past, it can be used on small, delicate areas of the body such as the chin and neck. Vaser® is considered one of the safest technologies available, and does not require a general anesthetic. About the Author Dr. Karen Mihalik is President of North Coast Laser Aesthetics and Liposuction in Ohio. An expert in SmartLipo™ and Vaser® liposuction techniques, she is a featured speaker on both techniques and trains other physicians in their use.
