On defence the Marauders return 10 starters from a unit that was ranked
second in the OUA in fewest rushing yards allowed and led the league in
interceptions in 2010. With another year of experience, Coach Ptaszek
believes the defence has the potential to be dominant. “I’m excited that
Ryan Chmielewski, Mackenzie Dent, and Dan Baronas decided to return
for their fifth-year. Their leadership will be critical and we expect them to
                                      play like all-stars.”

With Dent joined on the defensive line by veterans Roberto Filice, Scott
Caterine, and Tanvir Banghoo, McMaster should be a tough team to run
                                      against.

An outstanding group of linebackers includes: OUA all-star Chmielewski
and Ben D’Aguilar, last year’s Homecoming MVP. In addition, the Canadian
junior defensive player of the year Aram Eisho, is expected to make an
                                      immediate impact.

The Marauder secondary has grown as a unit and should be ready to shine in 2011. For the first time in several
seasons, McMaster will start an experienced group of defensive backs. It’s expected that some of the growing
pains endured by having to see some players learn on the job will pay major dividends in 2011. All-Star corner
Joey Cupido and safety Stephen Dennis are now veterans and along with players like Baronas, Michael Daly,
Allan Dicks, and Steven Ventresca should provide solid pass coverage. Freshman Nick Shortill is expected to
push the veterans for playing time. Leading the league in interceptions indicates the Marauder defensive backs
are playmakers.

Special teams will see the return of kicker and punter Tyler Crapigna, who
was headed toward a special season in 2010 before a serious injury cut it
short. Crapigna is back and will handle all the kicking chores having shown
the ability to put points on the board from long distance. The return game
has the potential for excitement as DiCroce has broken some long returns
in his career, while Jarred Jones and Rob Babic are also capable returners.
There are several recruits that will get the chance to use special teams as
their chance to get on the field and make an impact.

Ron Joyce Stadium has become a tough place to play for visiting teams and
the Marauders are counting on home field advantage to provide the edge
in a league where parity rules. Coach Ptaszek says the home crowd makes
a huge difference, “Our attendance has been great but we want to break
records and build momentum in 2011. We were 5 and 0 last year and a big
part of that success was our Marauder fans, which have really played the
role of our 13th man, and I expect every home game this season will be
even bigger and louder.”
