Metabolism of Alcohol within the Body Produces Acetaldehyde: Causing
Increased Risk of Cancer
It’s been nearly 30 years since it was first discovered that there lies a connection
between alcohol consumption and certain forms of cancer. Scientists are now for the
first time providing evidence for this connection. They believe that alcohol could be
carcinogenic. The results of the research and the subsequent evidence, has a
special implication for people from Asia.
As per Silvia Balbo, the lead researcher and Narconon Fresh Start , the human
body metabolizes or breaks down the alcohol found in hard liquor, wine and beer.
And as a result of this procedure a substance called acetaldehyde is formed. The
chemical backbone of acetaldehyde resembles formaldehyde which is also known
as human carcinogen. Researchers have also learnt from experiments that
acetaldehyde can damage the DNA, cause chromosomal abnormalities within the
cell and can even act as animal carcinogen.
As per Balbo, for the first time we have compelling evidence, that proves the
formation of acetaldehyde after the consumption of alcohol and that it dramatically
damages the DNA of a person. Once Acetaldehyde is formed, it attaches itself to the
human DNA and then interferes with the working of DNA, which in turn increases
the risk of cancer.
Balbo also mentioned that people have a very effective repair mechanism which
corrects the damages made to the DNA, which is why many people who involve is
social drinking will not develop cancerous cells. However it should be noted that
alcohol can cause other health issues apart from cancer. In addition to that, many
people have an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme is capable of
converting acetaldehyde into acetate, which is a comparatively less harmful.
However, more than 30 percent of people of from Asian descent, nearly 1.6 billion of
them have a variant of alcohol dehydrogenase, because of which they are not able
to breakdown acetaldehyde to acetate. Due to this genetic variant, the risk of
esophageal cancer due to alcohol consumption is very high for more than 30
percent of people of from Asian descent. Native Alaskans and Native Americans also
face deficiency of the same enzyme.
It is important to note that heavy drinking can override the benefits provided by
alcohol dehydrogenase, and can still cause cancer and other health condition for
the alcoholic. Therefore, it will always make sense to stop drinking alcohol. As per
Narconon Fresh Start – it is very important get help from a nutritionist if you
would like to quit drinking, since stopping to drink after many years of continues
drinking can give birth to certain health conditions.
