MMEA FEATURED SESSION AT THE EASTERN DIVISION IN-SERVICE
SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2011
ELEMENTARY DEMONSTRATION CHORUS
The Elementary Demonstration Chorus continues with its new and improved format for
2011. Elementary Choral Rehearsal Techniques will be taught via the EDC featuring 5th
grade students from across the state of Maryland.
For the children:
Fifth grade students will have the opportunity to spend the afternoon making music with
other equally enthusiastic young musicians. Students will rehearse and perform for
music teachers across the state. It is an honor to be in the EDC!
Elementary teachers frequently express interest in the opportunity to observe
rehearsals with an actual children’s chorus. This is it! The session will focus on many
aspects of the rehearsal process including:
o Vocal technique and intonation
o Rehearsal techniques for the large chorus
o Time management and rehearsal pacing
o Programming for elementary chorus.
Students will learn three pieces in advance; teachers are responsible for working with
their students to ensure that they are adequately prepared.
The Elementary Demonstration Chorus will take place in two
sessions on Saturday afternoon of the Eastern Division Conference. The
sessions will be at 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm, and the fee is $5 for the cost of music.
Please see the next page for the application form, which should be photocopied for
each applicant. The application deadline is January 14th. Students will be
selected based on the director’s recommendation as we strive for representation from
across the State. Teachers may nominate up to five students, and they must be
prioritized from one to five in the event that all nominations cannot be accepted.
Teachers must be up-to-date members of MENC.
