1. Your Body And Nutrition
We all need a daily well balanced diet for optimal health, feeding the
body at cellular level. You need to properly maintain your cells, for
proper health, with the right daily balanced diet, including foods from all
SIX major food groups. You are the only one who can supply the
essential nutrients to keep your cells in top working order. To give your
energy levels and vitality a boost, simply give your body the nutrients it
requires for healthy cells. It is so easy to do this with a daily serving
from your power packed nutrient groups that hold the secret to cellular
Important Facts:
 Our nutritional Life Chain (six chain of life) dictates what we
need to balance our diets with the following: Protein,
Carbohydrates, Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes and Fatty Acids
         (Liquids and Steroles),
 A chain is as strong as it’s weakest link,

 These six links are of vital importance and with anyone missing
        life is impossible.
 The majority of people worldwide have a deficiency of one or
more of these nutrients in their daily diet, making
        supplementation an absolute most.

Protein, as vital to human life as water and oxygen,
Only protein can supply as with the very material from which we are
made. Protein is the most plentiful substance in our bodies and
composes 18 to 20% of our total body weight. Together with water and
oxygen, protein is vital to all life as the chief tissue builder and basic
substance in every living cell. Everyone recognizes protein in the form
of muscle, skin, hair, eyes and nails. But, protein is also the principle
component of blood, heart, tendous, ligaments, brains, genes, hormones
and enzymes. The metabolic process that keeps our bodies running is
regulated by some proteins ( enzymes).

Our bodies cannot store protein, so we need a continuous supply from
our diet. When the body receives protein, it uses only what it needs at
that moment and convert the rest into fuel to be used as energy. Once
protein has been converted, it can never be changed back, no matter how
great the body’s demand for protein.

Protein is a combination of amino acids:
Protein is composed of a string of small chemical units known as amino
acids. The body cannot absorb the whole protein molecule and must
break it down into individual amino acids. These can be absorbed by the
body and reassembled to form the new protein combinations of the body
tissues, cells, enzymes and many others.

While all amino acids have some characteristics in common, each has
very distinctive properties that make it a separate chemical entity. Of
the 22 different amino acids the body requires, 14 can be synthesized or

‘constructed’ by the body even if they are not present in the diet. The 8
remaining are known as the essential amino acids because they cannot
be synthesized and must be supplied DAILY in the food we eat.

It is the Presence of the Essential Amino Acids that dictates the
‘quality’ of Protein.
A protein is only good as its least plentiful amino acid. The body
constructs protein (tissue, etc) using the essential amino acids. If it only
receives seven of the eight, it may not be able to synthesize the
particular protein it needs. Or, if it receives an abundant supply of seven
but only a small amount of the 8th, the body will construct proteins only
until the 8th amino acid is used up. The remaining will not be used for
protein synthesis. Therefore, to be a high quality protein, it must contain
all of the dietary essential amino acids in balanced amounts for the body
to use.
High Protein foods Are Often High in Fat and Cholesterol;
Today, from all sides, we are receiving the message to drastically reduce
the fat and cholesterol in our diets. This poses a dilemma. The very
foods that are highest in fats and cholesterol are some of our best sources
of protein-eggs, red meat, dairy products. If we stop eating these foods,
we are likely to seriously reduce the protein content of our diet.

It’s a kind of double-edged sword. If we reduce our intake of fat and
cholesterol, we also reduce our dietary intake of protein. However, if we
maintain our protein intake by not reducing the fat and cholesterol in our
diets, we are taking a tremendous risk with our health.

We know that the body cannot store protein in the same way it can store
fats. It must be supplied daily with proteins that contains all of the amino
acids in proportions that match the body’s needs. A protein deficiency
can result in (1) some forms of disease, or (2) premature aging. To
prevent these damaging effects, we need a high-quality, natural source
of protein that is low in fat and cholesterol Nutrishake and Protein
Powder fulfill this need.

Nature helps GNLD to Produce the Superior Protein
GNLD scientifically blends protein from several natural sources to
achieve superior amino acids profiles. The selection of excellent raw
materials that are properly balanced is not enough to assure a high
Protein Efficiency ratio (PER) protein. It is most important that a
processing method be used that will protect the values contained in the
raw ingredients.

Excessive heat can denature protein (destroy the amino acids structure)
reducing its value to the body. The important nutritive values of the
protein base materials GNLD uses are protected by an exclusive
Protoguard Process. This process blends high-quality protein raw
materials together at low temperatures and in the presence of three
protein-digesting enzymes.

Protein Saving:
The body puts its need for energy above all else. If the energy foods
(carbohydrates and fats) are not present to supply these essential needs,
the body will convert proteins into energy. It is important that some
carbohydrates and fats be available to provides what nutritionist call a
‘protein – saving’ action. This conserves the protein for its special
functions of maintenance, repair, growth and stamina. GNLD’s
Nutrishake protein supplements use fructose (natural fruit sugar) as the
carbohydrates for this important protein-saving action. Fructose is
particularly well suited for this purpose because it is absorbed slowly
and even more important, it is metabolized very rapidly once absorbed.
Slow absorption means sustained energy. Rapid means instant
utilization and energy. Protein Powder is unsweetened and free from
any form of sugar.

All 22 Amino Acids:
To achieve maximum protein efficiency, GNLD’s protein products
provide all 22 amino acids that are involved in human nutrition. Even
though the human body usually has the capacity to manufacture all but
the 8 essential amino acids (10 for children), supplying all 22 effectively

allows the essentials to be utilized to their fullest in functions such as
tissue building and repair or enzyme synthesis. This ‘completeness’
advantage is not found in all protein foods.

2. Enzymes:
Enzymes often hold the key to better health. They are considered the
‘missing link’ in health rebuilding. In the delicate, elaborate
electrochemical laboratory that is your body, each and every element is
vital for smooth-running efficiency. Enzymes are tiny elements that
may be even more valuable to body health than the other nutrients. We
know that enzymes are found in living cells.
Enzymes enter into digestive functions,
 help transform raw materials into body cells,
 store clycogen in the liver and muscles,
     change carbohydrates into fats,
 then transform protein into sugar and fats.
 They work to help to dispose the waste products of digestion
 Enter into just every body activity to help maintain life
Without enzymes life would cease:
Every cell of the body has some 1000 enzymes. Every moment,
throughout your body about two million biochemical reactions take
place that require the use of enzymes for motility. A deficiency of any
one enzyme can create nutritional upheaval to weaken and break the
chain of interrelated health. Specially, enzymes are body catalysts. That
is, they speed up a biochemical reaction that would otherwise proceed at
a much slower rate, if it would prodeed at all.
Make sure you are getting enough:
Nature has placed enzymes in raw foods – but most foods are cooked.
Therefore, when the temperature of cooking water or heat reaches over
40 C, the enzymes are destroyed. It is wise to eat as many raw fruit and
vegetables as possible so as to obtain an adequate amount of enzymes.
Many people do not eat enough raw foods and are thus enzyme-

deficient. Many others others need supplements to help meet the
challenges of daily living. Enzymes should be part of the supplemental
program for improved health.
Enzymes and digestion:
The digestive processes of the intestinal tract are those that perform the
finishing touches and final preparations before nutrients can be
absorbed. The primary factors in these processes are biochemicals
known as enzymes. For intestinal digestion, special cells in the pancreas
manufacture enzymes from amino acids and secrete them into chime
(partially digested food from the stomach); here, they catalyze the
reactions that break our food down further and free the nutrients they
Digestion Requires 3 types of Enzymes:
The nutrients in our food come in complex structures bound up in
proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The cooperative action of three general
types of enzymes is required to release the nutrients in a form that can be
 Proteins require protein-digesting enzymes to break them down
into their absorbable amino acids components.
 Fats require lipid-digesting enzymes to break them down into
         their absorbable fatty acid components.
 Carbohydrates require carbolytic enzymes to break them down
into their absorbable simple sugar components.
If any one of these enzymes is not present in sufficient quantities,
digestion cannot take place.
Unfortunately, as the body ages, enzyme production in many people
begins to diminish. In addition, eating too fast, overeating or poor food
choices may overburden the enzyme supply. Incomplete, digestion may
result. Nutrients will be wasted and intestinal discomfort or medically-
related problems may arise.

3. Vitamins:
Vitamins are highly complex substances that are essential for our good
health, normal growth and reproduction. They may be chemically
unrelated, but all vitamins are organic, found only in things that are, or

have been, alive. Every cell in our body requires vitamins everyday.
Although plants can manufacture all the vitamins they need, the human
body cannot. We must receive a constant supply through daily diet.
Vitamins come in two different categories:
Vitamins are categorized as either fat-solubic (Vitamins A,D,E and K)
and water-soluble (Vitamins B and C). The body can only store fat-
soluble vitamins, but the water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored and
any portion not immediately used is eliminated.
Vitamins, Vital Components of Good Health:
 vitamins perform a myriad of functions in the body and are vital
         to life itself,
 they are directly involved in such life-sustaining activities as
enzyme production, bone growth and development.
    Tissue repair,
    Vision,
    Digestion,
 Glandular activities and much more,
 They are even basic elements to our immune system where they
can act as antioxidants against cancer causing ‘free radical’
        Support general immune function;
    Prevent deficiency related diseases,
 Improve recovery from encounters with virus such as the
         common cold;
        Assist our organs in their detoxification process;
    Stimulate wound healing,
 Help with overall protection for optimum health.
How much do we need?
The amount of supplemental vitamins needed by any individual depends
greatly upon a number of factors, including food, choices, digestive
ability, environmental exposure, general health and even genetic
background. In other words, each person has their own individual

Research into disease leads to ‘Recommended Daily Allowances’
The significance of vitamins to human health because apparent through
research into disease. That research has identified dietary deficiency
diseases related to vitamins. In fact, prolonged of any vitamin will result
in disease. Some of the most well known beriberi (vitamin B1), Pellagra
(Niacin), Ricketts (vitamin D) and Scurvy ( vitamin C).

Great Direction In Vitamin Research:
Why there is increasing evidence that vitamins are heavily involved in
the body’s defense system. We are more than ever aware of the
protection qualities of vitamins. Vitamins have great potential to protect
us from a number of diseases or conditions common in our society.

Concern About The Vitamin Content in Our Food:
Supplying condition, abuse during harvest or to transport, storage,
refining, freezing, frying and cooking all are detrimental to the vitamin
content of the food we consume. Today, the handling of our food supply
is too often beyond our control. Since we must rely on others to provide
and protect the nutrient value of the food we buy, we can never be
completely sure we are receiving all the vitamins our bodies require.
Vitamins supplementation is one cery positive step we can take to ensure
that our bodies is receiving sufficient quantities of the vitamins
necessary for good health.

GNLD Vitamins…. Just the way nature intended:
To develop a vitamin supplement, GNLD researchers determine which
foods normally is added in our diets are the best sources of that
particular vitamin. Using this as a ‘blue fat from Nature’, GNLD works
to incorporate everything that is naturally occurring in fat food source
into a capsule or tablet form.

The Advantages of GNLD vitamin technology:
Our whole metabolic system is based on water solubility. The media
within our cells and surrounding our cells is primarily water. Therefore,

water-insoluble fats and fat-soluble vitamins pose a challenge to the
body’s digestive system. Within the stomach and intestine exist several
digestive enzymes and bile acids specifically designed to emulsify fats
so that these water-insoluble substances can be mixed with water (made
miscible) and taken up by water-based system of circulation. Intensive
research over the years has shown that absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
can be enhanced if the substance is emulsified, or made water miscible,
prior to consumption. GNLD was one of the first manufacturers to
translate this evidence into an advancement in product technology.

GNLD blends natural emulsifiers into the fat-soluble vitamin formula.
This unique process actually assist the body in its natural emulsification
process. The result is more rapid and even dispersion of the nutrient
throughout the stomach and intestine, enhancing rapid and efficient

Six hours Plus:
GNLD researchers recognized that a supplement could be more effective
if its nutrients are delivered in essentially the same way Nature deliyer
nutrients in food…. Slowly over the time, this objective was achieved in
our exclusive Sustained Released Vitamins. GNLD researchers
developed a special ability which control the gradual release of vitamins
for a full six hours or more Evidence shows that constant availability of
nutrients, without waste, leads to optimum nutrition.

4. Minerals:
Minerals are Essential:
In the body, minerals work to trigger enzymes, which are the catalysts
needed to convert dietary nutrients to readily usable forms. Without
minerals, other nutrients like vitamins, proteins, fats and carbohydrates
would be wasted. Minerals, though needed in very small amounts are
absolutely essential for life processes.

Nutrient Absorption Potential:

The amount of any given mineral in any form, that you will absorb is
influenced by many factors. What you eat, when you eat, how you eat,
your age, sex, level of stress, physical activity, living and working
environment and genetic considerations can all impact your nutrient
absorption potential. It is a fact, however, that of all the minerals
ingested through standard food supplies, only a small percentage are
absorbed by the body, the vast majority are not absorbed and, thus, are
lost. Therefore, mineral supplementation may be important even for
those who feel that they maintain a healthy, balanced diet.

Chelation enhances absorption:
GNLD’s scientific and medical experts have long recognized the
significance of nutrient absorption. Under the direction of Dr. Arthur
Furst, in the early seventies, GNLD researchers undertook the
development of dietary supplements that would provide increased
absorption of the essential mineral nutrients. By utilizing the process of
chelation, it was possible to significantly increase the absorption of
minerals. To understand the benefits of chelation, it is necessary to
understand some of the reasons why the body’s absorption of minerals is
so inefficient. Minerals are comprised primarily of positively charged
ions. The intestinal walls ( or villi) where nutrients are absorbed are
negatively charged. When positively charged minerals are ingested, a
great percentage of them are attracted by this negatively charged
membrane. (This process is similar to the way that opposite magnetic
poles – positive and negative-would attract one another if you put them
together) A relatively small amount of the ingested mineral find its way
through the membrane openings and enters the bloodstream. Chelation
increases absorption because chelating agents wrap themselves around
the mineral ion, much like a protective overcoat. By doing so, they tend
to neutralize the positive charge of the mineral. The neutralized metallic
mineral is not attracted by the membrane wall. The neutralized chelate
thus is able to pass through the villi and into the bloodstream.

Know Your Chelates:

Many products sold in health food stores as ‘chelated minerals’ are
really mineral gluoconates, citates, etc. When they reach the intestinal
tract for absorption, they are little better than many of the non-chelated
simple metallic minerals.
GNLD in Unique!
The GNLD process for chelating provides some unique technical
advantages that help to protect the nutrients while increasing your
absorption potential. GNLD chelated minerals are manufactured with
the most soluble forms of minerals, chelated with natural amino acids
derived from vegetable sources. Amino acids are natural compounds,
often referred to as the building blocks of protein. Also GNLD relies on
a two-to-one ratio (two parts of complete amino acid to one part of
metallic ion), to produce a two-layer, heavily protected coating that
totally shieds and neutralizes the magnetic charge. These processes
result in a greater absorption rate, a dramatic decrease in toxicity of
minerals due to neutralized charge of the metallic mineral and less
irritation to the stomach and intestinal lining because the magnetic
charges are shielded. No matter what factors may affect or influence
your nutrient absorption potential, GNLD’s unique chelated mineral
products ensure that you receive the high quality nutrients necessary to
maximize absorption.

5. Lipids And Sterols:
Lipids and sterols are part of the essential fatty acid family. Our food
supply should be rich in them, but with today’s advanced technology our
food is robbed of these important nutrients and this puts us at a risk in
many ways.

Lipids and sterols are part of the structure of the hormones made by our
endocrine gland system. Hormones make us what we are. They control
our mood, energy, appearance, healing, sexuality and many other
important aspects of life. Without a rich supply from our food, we have
difficulty manufacturing these hormones, and we suffer in many ways.
Lipids and sterols also become part of the cell structure. Every cell has a
membrane surrounding it that has a layer of these fatty acids within.

They keep the cell soft and pliable so that nutrients can readily pass

Food processors remove lipids and sterols from grains because, when
they grind the grain, it exposes the oils to oxygen, and they become
rancid. If we rely on white flour as our source of lipids and sterols we
risk serious deficiencies. The endocrine system becomes hampered and
can’t produce the hormones that are needed. This predisposes us to
chronic fatigue, allergies, arthritis and other degenerative diseases. At
the cellular level the cell membranes are starved for lipids and sterols
and become tough and resistant, making it more difficult for nutrients to
get into the cells and wastes to be excreted. A toxic buildup pollutes our
very being, leaving us fatigued and easy prey for disease.

GNLD’s unique Formula IV and formula IV Plus supplies this
extremely important link in the chain of life. The Tre-en-en Grain Oil
Concentrates of Formula IV and formula IV Plus greatly increase the
output of the endocrine system, putting an end to chronic fatigue and the
degenerative diseases caused by poor adrenal function. They also
abundantly supply the needs of the cell wall, making it easier for
nutrients to get in, and wastes to get out. This is a very important link in
the chain of life, and GNLD reinforces it beautifully.

5. Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates (sugar and starches) are eaten in excess in our daily diet.
Even if other links of the chain of life fail, our food will give us all the
carbohydrates we need. Since this is mainly what we bring home from
the market or grocery store, they are not needed in a food supplement
programme. In fact, this excessive intake of carbohydrates is the major
cause of disease. A cut back in the intake of refined carbohydrates is
strongly recommended for the improvement of good health.

2. Feel Better Programme or Optimum Cell Power Energy

The solution for the dietary gap in the six chain of life, can be found in
GNLD’s Feel Better Programme or the Optimum Cell Power Energy
Programme. The Fell Better Programme (F.B.P.) is formulated, based
on research by GNLD’s Scientific Advisory Board. One needs 60
nutrients per day for optimal health & longevity. These nutrients are
provided by the F.B.P in the balanced quantities as required by your
body. The key is not only in the broad spectrum of nutrients, but also in
the balanced quantities.

Although we can try our best to eat a well balanced diet – a diet
containing all 60 of these nutrients – it is highly improbable that we will
achieve this. (Only 2% + worldwide consume a well balanced diet).
Some reasons why we should take Food Supplements:
1) The soil has been depleted of trace elements and farmers use
chemicals, which deplete valuable nutrients in fruit and vegetables.
fertilizers and pesticides.
          2) Fruits & vegetables do not reach us fresh.
          3) Storage & freezing depletes nutrient content
          4) Cooking methods destroy a large portion of nutrients
          5) The us of aluminium cooking utensils deplete the food
from valuable nutrients and is the major cause of
               Alzheimers’s diseases and memory loss.
          6) Refining and processing not only remove a large amount
of nutrients, but preservatives, colourants and flavourants
added are dangerous to your health.
          7) Too much carbohydrates – unbalanced diet.
          8) Too much refined foods – lack of Fibre
          9) White sugar depletes the body from essential vitamins.
          10) Chlorine in our drinking water.
          11) Smoking and Alcohol deplete the body of valuable
          12) Inhaling of pollution and gasses or working in industrial
          13) Infrequent meals and the use of fast and convenient foods.

The sad part of life is that we cut down on our diets “to make ends meet”
only to pay out our “savings” for medical treatment some years later –
the result of depriving our bodies from essential nutrients. It makes
good reasoning; utilize your money on yourself by supplementing your
diet and avoid “giving away your money” to somebody else at a later
stage. In depriving your body of the necessary nutrients, your immune
system is negatively influenced. And when your immune system is
down, it open up your body for various attacks and resulting sickness.
There is a difference between “filling your stomach” with food and
“feeding your body/cells with nutrients” You can eat yourself to
bursting on e.g fresh white bread, but your body has received limited

  1. Feed Your Cells:
This is achieved by taking Formula IV twice or 1 sachet of Formula
IV Plus a day. Formula IV is not only a multi-vitamin & mineral, it
also contains the 3 essential fatty acids (essential means; required
  from your daily diet).

Layer of fatty acid, surrounding cell,
                                      protecting it against oxidation.

In a healthy cell, the cell membrane is selectively permeable allowing
nutrients to freely enter the cell but keeping germs out. It also allows
free elimination after metabolism of the nutrients.

In a “sick cell” the membrane has been damaged and it loses its
selectivity. The following happens to a greater or lesser extent.

                                “Sick Cell”

And what happens to a basket of “Good Apples” when one “Bad Apple”
is added? Formula IV, with its unique formulation and preparation,
supplements your diet providing the nutrients to feed your cells and
    maintaining healthy cells.

    2. Repair & Renewal of Cells:
Every day, one damages cells by burning, bumping, cutting, bruising etc.
These cell need to be repaired and for proper repairing, a complete

protein is needed – all amino acids in one meal! As it is virtually
impossible to have a complete protein in one meal, supplementation is
the answer by the way of Nutrishake / Pro Powder. Furthermore, all the
cells in your body are replaced approx. every 7 years. And without
quality protein, no quality cell can be replaced.

3. Protection of Cells:
Modern living has placed a heavy stress-load on our bodies for
protection against pollution, chemicals, drugs, chlorine in water, metal
poisoning (Lead in exhaust gases), colourants and preservatives in

For protection of cells, we need anti-oxidants and due to the onslaught of
modern life we need more and more powerful anti-oxidants, super
antioxidants, like Carotenoids. The carotenoids form a family of 600,
found in the pigmentation of green, yellow, orange and red fruit and

For optimal protection, we need 5 to 9 daily servings of these foods ( 1
serving is a 250ml cup). Do we eat this way? No. carotenoid Complex
was developed to bridge this gap.

3. Weight Management Programme:

Shift your metabolism into high gear, so you can lose weight and
centimeters! For a complete breakdown of this sensible and effective
way of changing your shape and boosting your confidence follow the
Weight Management Programme hereafter. Make “lose weight change
shape” a top priority in your life.
Shift your body’s system into weight-loss mode!

How to get into weight-loss mode:
Every wonder why losing weight seems so difficult? More often than
not, it’s because your body is in a weight storage mode. Your body
reacts to signals it receives from the brain, triggering mechanisms that
turn the weight storage mode “on”. These storage signals are triggered:
1. Anytime you take in more kilojoules than your body burns.
Your body hoards the kilojoules you don’t burn, especially fat,
storing them for the day they might be needed – they really pile
up! Though you may be storing only a few extra kilojoules a day,
those kilojoules add up to unwanted kilograms!

2. When you begin to eat less and cut back on kilojoules:
You body wants to burn fewer kilojoules to compensate for your
reduced supply, to protect the kilojoules it’s worked hard to store.
Your metabolism slows, and the grams and centimeters still add
up! To stop this cycle and step into the weight-loss mode,
kilojoule totals aren’t the only thing you need to pay attention to:
You also need the correct combination and balance of nutrients.
This helps prevent your body from misreading your kilojoule
changes and keeps the weight storage switch “off”. Unfortunately,
this balance is difficult to achieve: if your diet is too kilojoule-
restrictive, your metabolism will slow down and you are back into

the weight storage mode! We have made it easy for you to get the
right balance, so you can slip effortlessly into the weight-loss
mode. Our exclusive. Weight Management Programme unlocked

     Detoxification Programme:
Man was placed on an unpolluted, chemical, preservative and additive-
free world. In these circumstances his liver and kidneys could perform
the task of the daily detoxifying of the body adequately.

Today however, we live in a highly polluted world – exhaust gases of
vehicles, colourants and preservatives in our food, chlorine in the water,
polluting gases from standing water in open gutters, litter in the streets
etc…. this places an exceptional high load on the detoxifying actions of
our detoxifying organs, kidneys and liver. In fact the inflow of toxins
into these organs are at a rate at which they cannot cope with the
excretion of these toxins and they need assistance in the detoxifying of
our bodies. Toxins staying in the body too long will have a negative
influence on our health. If you have frequent headaches, lack of energy,
your hair is full, your eyes are dull, your skin is not looking well….
Then most probably you can benefit from detoxifying your system.

The Scientific Advisory Board has produced a detoxification programme
which everybody should take for
30 days, once a year.
Detoxification Programme: 1 month per year:
Beta Guard – 2 x 3 per day (2 bottles)
Stage 6 – 1 x 3 per day (1 bottle) – determine your own need
Multi-Mineral and Alfalfa – 2 x 3 per day (3 bottles)
Fibre tables – 2 x 3 per day – 30 minutes before a meal with a lots of
water (2 bottles)
Garlic Allium Complex – 2 x 3 per day (2 packets).

When customers come to you with physical problems, we always have
to make the proper legal warning and ethics comment that we have to
refer anybody with a sickness to a licensed practitioner, to do the

diagnoses and treatment. We are to keep ourselves postured and
positioned as nutritional support for better health.

When people come into nutrition anew, it is good to start with a detox

Beta Guard:
The detox program is built around Beta Guard, and the other products
are supporters to the Beta Guard. When a person has accumulated a
toxic level of either preservatives in the food chain or chemical exposure
to the environment from its industry or sprays or poisons, those are
accumulative. There are also the heavy metals: mercury and lead and on
and on go the problems that can dwell in you. The life of some of these
items are 300 years, so they will be gassing off into your metabolism
longer than you are going to live, and they need to come out, so that you
can be free and have a new life and a new start. Beta Guard releases
heavy metal poisons, and neutralize carcinogens, and take them where
they can be escorted out of the system, and clean and detoxify the body.

Beta Guard was created by Dr. Arthur Frust, the father of
Chemotherapy, to remove the toxic effect of chemotherapy. He knew
how strong a poison it was, and how many heavy metals and
carcinogens were there, and his own ethics said that he needed to have
an antidote, a detoxifier of such hard, strong chemicals. And it is true
that if you take a long period of chemo, the residues can end up having
as much damage on you as the sickness you are being treated for. Every
doctor that does not know should be told that there is an antidote for
chemo, and it is Beta Guard, created by the creator of chemo, so it could
not have any better credentials. Dr. Furst explains how Beta Guard
bonds with some of the heavy metals, and helps escort them out of the
system. Beta Guard will detoxify the glands and the organs and the
tissues, and free-up everything from your brain to the circulation in your
lympy system, and it is a wonderful detoxifier. So we need to get into 6
a day of the Beta Guard for 30 days, and get a good, strong exposure to
such a wonderful detox.

Once a lady’s hair was taken to a lab for analysis and it was found that
she was very toxic in several heavy metals. When she started with the
Beta Guard, she could only take one, and she got such a metal taste in
her saliva, that it was almost giving her headaches. She had to remain
on one a day for long time before she could increase it to 2, and she
continued to have this metal taste left in her saliva, and she started
noticing this whole new brain release, this while new healthy, feeling of
euphoria. So we have had great testimonies of people who could only
take one to start with. But the 6 a day for 30 days is what we are starting
with as the foundation.

The release of some of these heavy metals and carcinogens, also needs
to have a carrier system to escort them out, and this is where we start
moving towards Fibre. Fibre is a natural carrier and scraper in the
intestinal tract. It picks up heavy metals, and picks up other negative
carcinogens, and carries them right on out. And the fibre, of course,
picks up sugar. It is one of the most beneficial products for Diabetics.
They found that 35g of fibre a day will reduce the spill of sugar in the
kidneys of a Diabetic by 63%. Fibre ends up being the best sugar
control for what you have already swallowed, the best sugar control for a
Diabetic and the most beneficial. Fibre also picks up cholesterol,
lowering your cholesterol. The fibre holds moisture, protecting the
condition of your intestinal and colon lining, preventing hemorrhoids
and fissures and tearing tissue and cancer as well and so absolutely
belongs in a normal, health regime and especially in the detox-
programme as a carrier to what the Beta Guard has released.

Multi-Mineral and Alfalfa:
The Alfalfa in Multi-Mineral is also very important here, and we are
recommending 6 a day of that s well. The Alfalfa has all the electrolytes
that the human body is known to need. Each trace mineral, each
electrolyte, bonds to other factors, making various salts, and holding
fluids in various ways. Some fluids are to be thick in your system at the

same time that other fluids are to be thin. The electrolytes can do both at
the same time, based on various other electrolytes being present. Some
fluids are to be retained for a long time while others are to dump
quickly. And the Alfalfa, having the full spectrum of the electrolytes, is
able to cause your fluids to stabilize and balance and cause a throw-off
of the surplus in the chemistry and balance and your kidneys get a good
flush, your blood stream gets a good cleansing as well, and so you are
getting a full detox – not just in the colon – now you are getting to the
blood steam as well and so the Alfalfa belongs in the fluid channel, as
part of the detox as a carrier.

Stage 6

Stage 6 is the absolute best herbal laxative in the world. We have better
testimonies and results from this product than any other laxative. We
have people that have used various chemicals and stimulants and
enemas, and on and on the problems go. And of course, people that
have a need in this area, when they find Stage 6, they say “Wow! I
finally found the best. It is so mild, yet so effective” And, of course, the
Stage 6 herbs start off by being digested. They don’t stay just in the
intestinal tract, like chemical laxatives do. They go through the blood
stream off into the lymph system – and this is the other area of
transferring and flowing and moving of chemicals that need to be
cleaned out, besides your blood system for the fluids, and the intestine
and colon. The lymphatic glands circulatory system is twice as large as
the bloodstream, twice as much fluid in the lymph system as your veins
and arteries have blood in them, and it is a major system. Most of the
toxins and poisons that are in the body, that would be too strong for the
live if it went through the bloodstream – it can do too much glandular
damage – can, in fact, go through the lymph system without that
damage, and is the channel that carries these items for elimination out of
your body. And so you find that Stage 6 milks the lymph system, and
pumps it, and causes it not to have debris settle up the way you have
various lymphatic tumors and cancers, and gives you a full detox and
elimination of the whole body for a real cleanse. And people start to see

everything from the white of their eyes getting whiter, to their skin
getting cleaner and fresher, and blemishes and acne disappearing, and
flatulence and bad breath disappearing, and all of a sudden you say “Am
I the same person I used to be?” When you go through the detox –
programme you will find that you have cleansed your body properly,
and people do need to cleanse their bodies once a year. I do recommend
the detox programme once a year.

Garlic Allium complex:
How Garlic Allium Complex fits into the detox program, is how it is
releasing its power in the system for neutralizing carcinogens and
causing viruses and bacterias. Tlhe main featured item here is parasites.
So I want to feature for the detox, not only the release of the Allium
factor of Allicing, as well as the sulphur compounds and some of the
lipid factors that are in Garlic in the Allium family of leeks, onions and
chives, etc – such a complete powered product. Garlic is very effective
as a total body ridder of parasites, from the glands, organs and tissue, to
the intestine and colon.

Benefits of the Detoxification Programme:
Healthy and shiny hair
Clear skin
Acne disappear
Improved vision
Reduced sugar level
Cleanses blood
You will be total new person
Fresh breath
Flatulence disappears
De-wornt and de-parasite
Improves white of eyes

     Sports Nutrition:
1. The Energy to Win!

Our cells are like microscopic energy making machines –
And just like machines, they need to be properly maintained to remain in
good working order.

When your cells do not receive the correct nutritional ‘fuel’ they become
sluggish and inefficient – and so do you!
Athletes and active sports-people are even more aware of this feeling
than the average person. By putting additional physical demands on
their body, sportspeople have increased nutritional requirements. Like
so many of us, sports people do not pay enough attention to their diets –
and that can have serious consequences for their performance and long
term well-being!

1. The Athletic Lifestyle – Training, Competition and Recovery:
Every athlete, irrespective of their sport, is continuously in one of three
states of activity – namely :
   1. Training
   2. Competition or
   3. Recovery.
Depending on the nature of the sport, the cycle in which the athlete
moves through these various stages can vary dramatically. Some
athletes train for months, leading up to a single event, while others move
back and forth between training and competition on a daily or weedly

Whether training or competing however, the process of recovery follows
each instance of exertion and taxes the body’s innate ability to repair
itself. All three stages, and recovery in particular, pose increased
nutritional demands on the individual in order to carry out these
functions effectively. The nutritional needs of sports people reflect the
physiological stresses resulting from high level exercise, both in training
and competition, as well as their unusual lifestyles. These factors are
extreme at all levels of sports participation and are important
considerations for a number of committed recreational athletes. There

are nutritional strategies that can help sportspeople train more effectively
and recover more efficiently.

Special nutritional supplementation employed before, during and after
competition may help reduce the onset or the effects of fatigue, and thus
optimize performance. Training largely determines the nutritional needs
of most sportspeople, since it is the predominant influence on energy
expenditure as well as lifestyle.

3. Nutrition For Sportspeople:
The nutritional needs of sportspeople reflect the physiological stresses
resulting from high level exercise, both in training and competition, as
well as in their unusual lifestyles. We offer Sports Nutritional
Supplementation at various levels to sportspeople who are themselves at
various levels of involvement with their sport consisting of essential
products selected to meet their basic nutritional demands. We offer
nutritional strategies that will help sportspeople to train more effectively
by taking care of the special dietary needs before, during and after
competition which may help reduce the onset of or the effects of fatigue
and thus optimize performance. These could be categorized in the
following way:

Starters / Schoolgoers:
Daily Vitality Pack

Active Sportspeople:
Daily Vitality Pack
Carotenoid Complex
Omega 3 – it is also appropriate to add Omega-3 for its benefits in
reducing recovery time. One of the major setbacks common to
sportspeople is soreness and stiffness in muscles and joints particularly
after heavy workouts. Residual soreness may last up to 4 days. A diet
rich in Omega-3 fatty acids supports the body’s anti-inflammatory

response in stress and injury, and helps reduce pain caused by
inflammation. Research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids also support
health cardiovascular systems – a necessity especially for athletes.

Competitive Sportspeople:
Daily Vitality Pack
Ami-Tone-often used by endurance athletes as a method of mobilizing
fat to be used as added source of energy.

6. GR 2 Control Weight Loss Programme:
The Science behind the GR 2 Control:
GNLD has taken the science of weight loss to an unprecedented level
with the GR 2 Control Weight Loss Programme. With GR2 control, you
benefit from the sum effort of countless science and health professionals
working with the single-minded purpose of creating nothing short of the
finest weight loss programme available anywhere. No other programme
can match GNLD’s combination of scientific backing, testing and real
world results.

A product of three years of research and investigation, GR 2 control is
solidly based on the latest scientific data regarding weight loss. After
researching all existing data suggesting a link between obesity, disease,
and diet, the GNLD Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and Global
Science Network (GSN) discovered a disturbing trend. Over the past
several decades there has been an alarmingly increased intake of
“insulin-inducing” carbohydrates in the average adult’s diet. This trend
was strongly correlated with a dramatic increase in excess weight and
obesity, as well as diabetes.

Further investigation showed that the body’s “glycemic response” to
carbohydrates ( meaning how quickly blood glucose levels rise, and in
what amounts, as a result of consuming a carbohydrate), was the culprit.

High glycemic response diets set people up for weight gain, even when
calories/kilojoules were not excessive. Armed with this knowledge, they
concluded that if one could control his/her glycemic response to foods,
one can control the way the body uses energy and stores fat and possibly
help avoid disease.

Glucose: A Doubled-edged Sword!
At the foundation of the programme is an in-depth understanding of how
the body produces, uses and controls glucose. The body recognizes
blood glucose as both an essential partner of energetic health and a
potentially lethal adversary as well. The reason is that glucose is the
basic carbohydrate energy unit that circulates through the bloodstream to
the cells. However, it also has the potential to damage that same
circulatory system if levels remain too high for too long. Thus, when
blood glucose levels exceed certain predetermined upper limits, the body
needs to lower those levels rapidly. To do that it secretes insulin, which
enters the bloodstream and causes glucose to be lowered.

Glycemic Response and Overall Health:
As we have learned more and more about how the body responds to
carbohydrates, many leading scientists have come to believe that
specific advantages can be gained by keeping the body’s glycemic
response as controlled as possible. Eating a lower glycemic response
diet results in lower less dramatic elevations of blood glucose. This in
turn means less insulin needs to be secreted. Secreting less insulin helps
reduce the risk of diabetes because the body’s ability to make insulin is
not continually overtaxed. Additionally, secreting less insulin is
associated with more heart healthy blood lipid levels in particular lover
triglycerides and higher HDL (good) cholesterol. Thus, it is though that
lower insulin secretion helps reduce the risk of heart disease.
By applying Glycemic response Control, three very important weight
loss advantages occur:
 by keeping the glycemic response within the “controlled zone”,
insulin secretions are correspondingly low, blood glucose levels
are sustained over prolonged periods as available energy and

feelings of hunger are staved off longer, meaning fewer overall
calories/kilojoules are needed to be “comfortable”.
 Because blood glucose is not constantly being cleared from the
blood fat conversion and storage are greatly reduced,
 Because fat storage is slowed, fat utilization is increased.

It has been scientifically proven that obesity is an increasing problem the
world over. Almost 80% of obese adults have high blood pressure,
diabetes, elevated blood-cholesterol levels, coronary artery disease or
osteoarthritis. Nearly 40% have more than one of these conditions. The
financial cost of these diseases is staggering.
      (i) Serious Health Risks:

Excess weight carries with it some serious physical and
emotional health threats. Your weight gain is associated with greater
health risks like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancer,
stroke, gall bladder disease, arthritis and early death.
      (ii) Emotional Stress:
Weight seriously affects self image, ensuring that overweight
people suffer considerably more often from low self-esteem
than normal weight individual. It is hard to feel good about
yourself when you don’t like how you look.
      (iii) Treating Yourself with Respect:
It is just as important to be realistic when approaching the
problem. You are a unique individual and your biggest
challenge is to make the absolute best of what you uniquely
(iv) Be who You Really Are:
What is important is to examine your bone structure, y (the
way you are built) and family history to determine a realistic
            weight goad.
      (v) Take Control With GR2 Control:
But now, with the scientifically-proven GR2 Control Weight
Loss programme, you can lose those excess kilograms
quickly, safely and sensibly… and discover the weight and
shape that is absolutely right for you. By choosing this
            programme, you have invested in your most important asset;
yourself. Say goodbye to setbacks, and say hello to the new

Weight has a way of creeping on over the years – from taking in
more kilojoules than you burn. You can easily add 5kgs or more to your
weight every decade. Your body has been taught to eat a certain way
over the years, developing habits that encourage weight gain without
you even realizing it. By choosing certain foods, high in sugars,
starches, (carbohydrates), you could have set your body up over many

years for the roller coaster effect of uncontrolled glycemic response, as
your blood sugar goes through peaks and valleys throughout the day
The Glycemic Response:
Glycemic response is quite simple how much (and how quickly) glucose
enters your blood steam as a result of consuming a carbohydrate. When
you consume high glycemic response-inducing carbohydrates, your
glucose level skyrockets upward. When too much glucose gets into your
blood, steam, your pancreas receives a signal to produce insulin, a
powerful hormone to remove excess sugar (glucose) from your blood,
and normalize your blood sugar level. When your body dumps this
glucose (or energy), it must convert it to fat and store it- his is known as
the “insulin trap” This leaves the body with the impression that it has
more energy than it needs so it stops fat conversion and burning. And
the more insulin-producing carbohydrates you eat, the more this occurs.

The Glycemic roller Coaster:
                                    Spike in insulin causes
                                    Hypoglycoma can hinder the body’s
Ability to use body fat for energy.

Keeping carbohydrates under control.
The majority of the foods you have come to crave are insulin-inducing
carbohydrates and many foods that have long been considered healthy,
like while rice, most breads, baked potatoes and even pasta can
dramatically increase your glycemic response. Non insulin-inducing
carbohydrates, help your body maintain a steady blood sugar level and
do not create a strong glycemic response.

Persons from different countries or backgrounds have different ways to
explain what causes sickness.
A baby gets diarrhea. But why?
People in small villages may say it is because the parents did something
wrong, or perhaps because they made a god or spirit angry. A doctor may
say it is because the child has an infection.
A public health officer may say it is because the villagers do not have a
good water system or use latrines. A social reformer may say the
unhealthy conditions that lead to frequent childhood diarrhea are caused by
an unfair distribution of land and wealth. A teacher may place the blame on
lack of education. People see the cause of sickness in terms of their own
experience and point of view. Who then is right about the cause? Possibly
everyone is right, or partly right. This is because. . .Each of the causes
suggested above may be a part of the reason why a baby gets diarrhea.
To prevent and treat sickness successfully, it helps to have as full an
understanding as possible about the common sicknesses in your area and
the combination of things that causes them. In this book, different
sicknesses are discussed mostly according to the systems and terms of
modern or scientific medicine.

When considering how to prevent or treat different sicknesses, it helps to
think of them in two groups: infectious and non-infectious.
Infectious diseases are those that spread from one person to another.
Healthy persons must be protected from people with these sicknesses.

Non-Infectious diseases do not spread from person to person. They have
other causes. Therefore, it is important to know which sicknesses are
infectious and which are not.
Non-infectious Diseases
Non-infectious diseases have many different causes. But they are never
caused by germs, bacteria, or other living organisms that attack the body.
They never spread from one person to another. It is important to realize
that antibiotics, or medicines that fight germ, do not help cure non-
infectious diseases.
Remember: Antibiotics are of no use for non-infectious diseases.
Problems caused by something that wears out or goes wrong
within the body:
heart attack
epileptic seizures
migraine headaches
Problems caused by something from outside that harms or troubles
the body:
cough from smoking

stomach ulcer
Problems caused by a lack of something the body needs:
night blindness and
goiter and cretinism
cirrhosis of the liver
(part of the cause)
Problems people are born with: Problems that begin in the mind
(mental ‘illnesses’):
fear that something is harmful when it is not
nervous worry (anxiety)
belief in hexes (witchcraft)
uncontrolled fear (hysteria)
crossed or wall-eyes
other deformities
epilepsy (some kinds)
retarded (backward)
Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria and other organisms (living
things) that harm the body. They are spread in many ways. Here are some
of the most important kinds of organisms that cause infections and
examples of sicknesses they cause:
Bacteria, like many of the organisms that cause infections, are so small you
cannot see them without a microscope—an instrument that makes tiny
things look bigger. Viruses are even smaller than bacteria.
Antibiotics (penicillin, tetracycline, etc.) are medicines that help cure certain
illnesses caused by bacteria. Antibiotics have no effect on illnesses
caused by most viruses, such as colds, flu, mumps, chickenpox, etc. Do
not treat virus infections with antibiotics. They will not help and may be
colds, flu, measles, from someone who is aspirin and other mumps,
chickenpox, sick, through the painkillers (Medicines infantile paralysis, air,
by coughing. like antibiotics do not virus diarrhea flies, etc. fight viruses
effectively.) rabies animal bites Vaccinations prevent warts touch some

infections virus (germs smaller than bacteria)

Sometimes diseases that have different causes and require different
treatment result in problems that look very much alike. For example
1. A child who slowly becomes thin and wasted, while his belly gets
more and more swollen, could have any (or several) of the following
• malnutrition
• a lot of roundworms, , (usually together with malnutrition)
• advanced tuberculosis
• a long-term severe urinary infection
• any of several problems of the liver or spleen
• leukemia (cancer of the blood)

2. An older person with a big, open, slowly growing sore on the ankle
could have:
• bad circulation that results from varicose veins or other causes
• diabetes
• infection of the bone (osteomyelitis)

• leprosy
• tuberculosis of the skin
• advanced syphilis
The medical treatment for each of these diseases is different, so to treat
them correctly it is important to tell them apart. Many illnesses at first seem
very similar. But if you ask the right questions and know
what to look for, you can often learn information and see certain signs that
will help tell you what illness a person has. This book describes the typical
history and signs for many illnesses. But be careful! Diseases do not
always show the signs described for them—or the signs may be confusing.
For difficult cases, the help of a skilled health worker or doctor is
often needed. Sometimes special tests or analyses are necessary.
Work within your limits!
Remember it is easy to make mistakes.
Never pretend you know something you do not.
If you are not fairly sure what an illness is and how to treat it, or if the
Illness is very serious—get medical help.

Many of the common names people use for their sicknesses were first used
long before anyone knew about germs or bacteria or the medicines that
fight them. Different diseases that caused more or less similar problems-
such as ‘high fever’ or ‘pain in the side’—were often given a single name. In
many parts of the world, these common names are still used. City-trained
doctors often neither know nor use these names. For this reason, people
sometimes think they apply to ‘sicknesses doctors do not treat’. So they

treat these home sicknesses with herbs or home remedies. Actually,
most of these home sicknesses or ‘folk diseases’ are the same ones known
to medical science. Only the names are different.

For many sicknesses, home remedies work well. But for some
sicknesses, treatment with modern medicine works much better and
may be life‑saving. This is especially true for dangerous infections like
pneumonia, typhoid, tuberculosis, or infections after giving birth. To know
which sicknesses definitely require modern medicines and to decide what
medicine to use, it is important that you try to find out what the disease is
in the terms used by trained health workers and in this book.
If you are unsure what the sickness is—especially if it seemsserious—try
to get medical help. The rest of this chapter gives examples of common or
traditional names people use for various sicknesses. Often a single name is
given to diseases that are different according to medical science.
Examples cannot be given for each country or area where this book may
be used. Therefore, I have kept those from the Spanish edition, with names
used by villagers in western Mexico. They will not be the same names you
use. However, people in many parts of the world see and speak of their
illnesses in a similar way. So the examples may help you think about how
people name diseases in your area. Can you think of a name your people
use for the following ‘folk diseases’? If you can, write it in after the Spanish
name, where it says, Name in Your Area:

Spanish Name: EMPACHO (STOPPED-UP GUT) Name in Your Area:
In medical terms empacho (impaction) means that the gut is

stopped up or obstructed But in Mexican villages any illness causing
stomach‑ache or diarrhea may be called empacho. It is said that a ball of
hair or something else blocks a part of the gut. People put the blame on
witches or evil spirits, and treat with magic cures and cupping. Sometimes
folk healers pretend to take a ball of hair and thorns out of the gut by
sucking on the belly. Different illnesses that cause stomach pain or
discomfort and are sometimes called
empacho are:
• diarrhea or dysentery with cramps
• worms
• swollen stomach due to malnutrition
• indigestion or stomach ulcer
• and rarely, true gut obstruction or appendicitis
Most of these problems are not helped much by magic cures or cupping.
To treat empacho, try to identify and treat the sickness that causes it.
Spanish Name: DOLOR DE IJAR (SIDE PAINS) Name in Your Area:
This name is used for any pain women get in one side of their belly. Often
the pain goes around to the mid or lower back. Possible causes of this kind
of pain include:
• an infection of the urinary system (the kidneys, the bladder, or the tubes
that join them,
• cramps or gas pains (see diarrhea,
• menstrual pains
• appendicitis
• an infection, cyst, or tumor in the womb or ovaries or an out-of-place

Spanish Name: LA CONGESTIÓN (CONGESTION) Name in Your Area:
Any sudden upset or illness that causes great distress is called la
congestión by Mexican villagers. People speak of congestión of:
It is said that la congestión strikes persons who break ‘the diet’ by eating
foods that are forbidden or taboo after childbirth, while taking a medicine, or
when they have a cold or cough. Although these foods usually cause no
harm and are sometimes just what their bodies need, many people will not
touch them because they are so afraid of getting la congestón.
Different illnesses that are sometimes called la congestión are:
• Food poisoning, from eating spoiled food: causes sudden vomiting
followed by diarrhea, cramps, and weakness.
• A severe allergic reaction, in allergic persons after they eat certain foods
(shellfish, chocolate, etc,), take certain medicines, or are injected with
penicillin. May cause vomiting, diarrhea, cold sweat, breathing trouble, itchy
rash, and severe distress
• Any sudden upset of the stomach or gut: see diarrhea, vomiting, and
acute abdomen • Sudden or severe difficulty breathing: caused by asthma,
pneumonia, or something stuck in the throat
• Illnesses that cause seizures (fits) or paralysis: see seizures, tetanus,
meningitis polio, and stroke.
• Heart attacks: mostly in older persons.
Spanish Name: LATIDO (PULSING) Name in Your Area:
Latido is a name used in Latin America for a pulsing or ‘jumping’ in the pit
of the stomach. It is really the pulse of the aorta or big blood vessel coming
from the heart.
This pulse can be seen and felt on a person who is very thin and hungry.
Latido is often a sign of malnutrition —or hunger! Eating enough good food

is the only real treatment. the head, the chest, the stomach, or the whole

Spanish Name: SUSTO (HYSTERIA, FRIGHT) Name in Your Area:
According to Mexican villagers, susto is caused by a sudden fright a person
has had, or by witchcraft, black magic, or evil spirits. A person with susto is
very nervous and afraid. He may shake, behave strangely, not be able to
sleep, lose weight, or even die.
Possible medical explanations for susto:
1. In many people, susto is a state of fear or hysteria, perhaps caused by
the ‘power of belief’ (see p. 4). For example, a woman who is afraid
someone will hex her becomes nervous and does not eat or sleep well.
She begins to grow weak and lose weight. She takes this as a sign she has
been hexed, so she becomes still more nervous and frightened. Her susto
gets worse and worse.
2. In babies or small children, susto is usually very different. Bad dreams
may cause a child to cry out in his sleep or wake up frightened. High fevers
from any illness can cause very strange speech and behavior (delirium). A
child that often looks and acts worried may be malnourished (p. 112).
Sometimes early signs of tetanus or meningitis (p. 185) are also called
When the susto is caused by a specific illness, treat the illness. Help the
person understand its cause. Ask for medical advice, if needed.
When the susto is caused by fright, try to comfort the person and help him
understand that his fear itself is the cause of his problem. Magic cures and
home remedies sometimes help.

If the frightened person is breathing very hard and fast, his body may be
getting too much air—which may be part of the problem:
• person very frightened
• breathing fast and deep
• fast, pounding heartbeat
• numbness or tingling of face, hands, or feet
• muscle cramps
♦ Keep the person as quiet as possible.
♦ Have her put her face in a paper bag and breathe slowly. She should
continue breathing the same air for 2 or 3 minutes.
This will usually calm her down.
♦ Explain to her that the problem is not dangerous and she will soon be all

This page shows 2 examples of misunderstandings that can result when
certain names like ‘cancer’ and ‘leprosy’ mean one thing to medical
workers and something else to villagers. In talking with health workers-and
in using this book:
Spanish Name: CANCER (CANCER) Name in Your Area:
Mexican villagers use the word cancer for any severe infection of the skin,
especially badly infected wounds or gangrene.

In modern medical language, cancer is not an infection, but an abnormal
growth or lump in any part of the body. Common types of cancer that you
should watch out for are:
Any hard, painless, slowly growing lump in any part of your body may be
cancer. Cancer is often dangerous and may need surgery.
At the first suspicion of cancer seek medical help.
Spanish Name: LEPRA (LEPROSY) Name in Your Area:
Mexican villagers call any open spreading sore lepra.
This leads to confusion, because medical workers use
this term only for true leprosy (Hansen’s disease.
Sores commonly called lepra are:
• impetigo and other skin infections
• sores that come from insect bites or scabies
• chronic sores or skin ulcers such as those caused by
poor circulation
• skin cancer
• less commonly, leprosy or tuberculosis of
the skin
This child has impetigo, not leprosy.
Avoid misunderstanding— go by the signs and history of a person’s
sickness, not the name people give it!
cancer of the skin
breast cancer
cancer of the womb or ovaries

Spanish Name: LA FIEBRE (THE FEVER) Name in Your Area:

Correctly speaking, a fever is a body temperature higher than normal.
But in Latin America, a number of serious illnesses that cause high
temperatures are all called la fiebre—or ‘the fever’. To prevent or treat
these diseases successfully, it is important to know how to tell one from
another. Here are some of the important acute illnesses in which fever is
an outstanding sign. The drawings show the fever pattern (rise and fall of
temperature) that is typical for each disease.
Begins with weakness, chills and fever. Fever may come and go for a few
days, with shivering (chills) as the temperature rises, and sweating as it
falls. Then, fever may come for a few hours every second or third day. On
other days, the person may feel more or less well.
Begins like a cold. Temperature goes up a little more each day. Pulse
relatively slow. Sometimes diarrhea and dehydration.
Trembling or delirium (mind wanders). Person very ill.
Similar to typhoid. Rash similar to that of measles, with tiny bruises.
Person loses appetite. Does not wish to eat or smoke. Wants to vomit
(nausea). Eyes and skin turn yellow; urine orange or brown; stools whitish.
Sometimes liver becomes large, tender. Mild fever. Person very weak.

Rheumatic fever:
Most common in children and teenagers. Pain in joints. High fever. Often
comes after a sore throat. May be pain in the chest with shortness of
breath. Or uncontrolled movements of arms and legs.
Brucellosis (undulant fever,
Malta fever):
Begins slowly with tiredness, headache, and pains in the bones. Fever and
sweating most common at night. Fever disappears for a few days only to
come back again. This may go on for months or years.
Childbirth fever:
Begins a day or more after giving birth. Starts with a slight fever, which
often rises later. Foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Pain and sometimes
All of these illnesses can be dangerous. In addition to those shown
here, there are many other diseases that may cause similar signs and
fever. For example, fevers that last for more than 1 month, or night sweats,
may be caused by the HIV/AIDS virus. When possible, seek medical help.

1. The diet of mothers after giving birth:
In many areas there is a dangerous popular belief that a woman who has
just had a baby should not eat certain foods. This folk diet—which forbids
some of the most nutritious foods and may only let the new mother eat
things like cornmeal, noodles, or rice soup—makes her weak and anemic.
It may even cause her death, by lowering her resistance to hemorrhage
(bleeding) and infection.
After giving birth a mother needs to eat the most nutritious foods she
can get.
Here is a healthy mother who ate many kinds of nutritious foods
after giving birth: Here lies a mother who was not given nutritious
foods after giving birth: In order to fight infections or bleeding and to
produce enough milk for her child, a new mother should eat the main
food together with plenty of body building foods like beans, eggs,
chicken, and if possible, milk products, meat, and fish. She also needs
protective foods like fruits and vegetables, and high energy helpers (oils
and fatty foods). None of these foods will harm her; they will protect her
and make her stronger.
2. It is not true that oranges, guavas, or other fruits are bad for a
person who has a cold, the flu, or cough. In fact, fruits like oranges and
tomatoes have a lot of vitamin C, which may help fight colds and other
3. It is not true that certain foods like pork, spices, or guavas cannot
be eaten while taking medicine. However, when a person has a disease
of the stomach or other parts of the digestive system, eating a lot of fat or
greasy foods may make this worse whether or not one is taking medicines.

A person with anemia has thin blood. This happens when blood is lost or
destroyed faster than the body can replace it. Blood loss from large
wounds, bleeding ulcers, or dysentery can cause anemia. So can malaria,
which destroys red blood cells. Not eating enough foods rich in iron can
cause anemia or make it worse. Women can become anemic from blood
loss during monthly bleeding (menstrual periods) or childbirth if they do not
eat the foods their bodies need. Pregnant women are at risk of becoming
severely anemic, because they need to make extra blood for their growing
babies. In children anemia can come from not eating foods rich in iron. It
can also come from not starting to give some foods in addition to breast
milk, after the baby is 6 months old. Common causes of severe anemia in
children are hookworm infection, chronic diarrhea, and dysentery.
The signs of anemia are:
• pale or transparent skin
• pale insides of eyelids
• white fingernails
• pale gums
• weakness and fatigue
• If the anemia is very severe, face and feet may be swollen, the
heartbeat rapid, and the person may have shortness of breath.
• Children and women who like to eat dirt are usually anemic.
Treatment and prevention of anemia:
♦ Eat foods rich in iron. Meat, fish, and chicken are high in iron. Liver is
especially high. Dark green leafy vegetables, beans, peas, and lentils also
have some iron. It also helps to cook in iron pots. To help the body absorb

more iron, eat raw vegetables and fruit with meals, and avoid drinking
coffee and tea with food.
♦ If the anemia is moderate or severe, the person should take iron. This is
especially important for pregnant women who are anemic.
For nearly all cases of anemia, ferrous sulfate tablets are much better than
liver extract or vitamin B12. As a general rule, iron should be given by
mouth, not injected, because iron injections can be dangerous and are no
better than pills.
♦ If the anemia is caused by dysentery (diarrhea with blood), hookworm,
malaria, or another disease, this should also be treated.
♦ If the anemia is severe or does not get better, seek medical help. This is
especially important for a pregnant woman.
Many women are anemic. Anemic women run a greater risk of
miscarriage and of dangerous bleeding in childbirth. It is very important
that women eat as much of the foods high in iron as possible,
especially during pregnancy. Allowing 2 to 3 years between pregnancies
lets the woman regain strength and make new blood

Children whose skin is almost never exposed to the sunlight may become
bowlegged and develop other bone deformities (rickets). This problem can
be combatted by giving the child fortified milk and vitamin D (found in fish
liver oil). However, the easiest and cheapest form of prevention is to be
sure direct sunlight reaches the

child’s skin for at least 10 minutes a day or for longer periods more often.
(Be careful not to let his skin burn.) Never give large doses of vitamin D
over long periods, as it can poison the child.
High blood pressure can cause many problems, such as heart disease,
kidney disease, and stroke. Fat people are especially likely to have high
blood pressure.
Signs of dangerously high blood pressure:
• frequent headaches
• pounding of the heart and shortness of breath with mild exercise
• weakness and dizziness
• occasional pain in the left shoulder and chest
All these problems may also be caused by other diseases. Therefore, if a
person suspects he has high blood pressure, he should see a health
worker and have his blood pressure measured.
WARNING: High blood pressure at first causes no signs, and it should be
lowered before danger signs develop. People who are overweight or
suspect they might have high blood pressure should have their blood
pressure checked regularly. For instructions on measuring blood pressure.
What to do to prevent or care for high blood pressure:
♦ If overweight, lose weight.
♦ Avoid fatty foods, especially pig fat, and foods with a lot of sugar or
Always use vegetable oil instead of pig fat.
♦ Prepare and eat food with little or no salt.
♦ Do not smoke. Do not drink much alcohol, coffee, or tea.

♦ When the blood pressure is very high, the health worker may give
medicines to lower it. Many people can lower their blood pressure by losing
weight if they are fat (next page), and by learning to relax.

Signs of rickets:

To be very fat is not healthy. Very heavy people are more likely to get high
blood pressure, stroke, gallstones, some kinds of diabetes, arthritis in legs
and feet, and other problems. Sometimes being too heavy brings on illness,
and sometimes illness may cause you to become too heavy.
As our diets change and traditional foods are replaced by processed foods,
especially “junk foods” high in calories but low in nutrition, people tend to
gain weight in ways that are not healthy.
Losing weight may help with the illnesses mentioned above. Losing weight
is also important if you are having difficulty doing your daily activities. You
can lose weight by:
♦ eating less greasy, fatty, or oily foods.
♦ eating less sugar or sweet foods.
♦ getting more exercise.
♦ stop eating processed foods and eat
fresh fruits and vegetables instead.

A person who has hard stools and has not had a bowel movement for 3 or
more days is said to be constipated. Constipation is often caused by a poor
diet (especially not eating enough fruits, green vegetables, or foods with
natural fiber like whole grain bread) or by lack of exercise.
Drinking more water and eating more fruits, vegetables, and foods with
natural fiber like whole grain bread, cassava, wheat bran, rye, carrots,
turnips, raisins, nuts, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, is better than using
laxatives. It also helps to add a little vegetable oil to food each day. Older
people especially may need to walk or exercise
more in order to have regular bowel movements.
A person who has not had a bowel movement for 4 or more days, if he
does not have a sharp pain in his stomach, can take a mild salt laxative like
milk of magnesia.
But do not take laxatives often.
Do not give laxatives to babies or young children. If a baby is severely
constipated, put a little cooking oil up the rectum (asshole). Or, if
necessary, gently break up and remove the hard shit with a greased finger.
Never use strong laxatives or purgatives— especially if there is
stomach pain.

Persons with diabetes have too much sugar in their blood. This can start
when a person is young (juvenile diabetes) or older (adult diabetes). It is
usually more serious in young people, and they need special medicine
(insulin) to control it. But it is most common in people over age 40 who eat
too much and get fat.
Early signs of diabetes: Later, more serious signs:

• always thirsty • itchy skin
• urinates (pees) often and a lot • periods of blurry eyesight
• always tired • some loss of feeling in hands or feet
• always hungry • frequent vaginal infections
• weight loss • sores on the feet that do not heal
• loss of consciousness (in extreme cases)
All these signs may be caused by other diseases. In order to find out
whether a person has diabetes, test her urine to see if there is sugar in it.
One way to test the urine is to taste it. If it tastes sweet to you, have 2 other
persons taste it. Have them also taste the urine of 3 other people. If
everyone agrees that the same person’s urine is sweeter, she is probably
diabetic. Another way of testing urine is to use special paper strips (for
example, Uristix). If these change color when dipped in the urine, it has
sugar in it. If the person is a child or young adult, he should be seen by an
experienced health worker or doctor. When a person gets diabetes after
he is 40 years old, it can often be best controlled without medicines, by
eating correctly. The diabetic person’s diet is very important and must
be followed carefully for life.
The diabetic diet: Fat people with diabetes should lose weight until their
weight is normal. Diabetics must not eat any sugar or sweets, or foods
that taste sweet. It is important for them to eat lots of high fiber foods,
such as whole grain breads. But diabetics should also eat some other
starchy foods, like beans, rice, and potatoes, and also foods high in protein.
Diabetes in adults can sometimes be helped by drinking the sap of the
prickly pear cactus (nopal, Opuntia). To prepare, cut the cactus into small
pieces and crush them to squeeze out the liquid. Drink 1 ½ cups of the
liquid 3 times each day before

meals. To prevent infection and injury to the skin, clean the teeth after
eating, keep the skin clean, and always wear shoes to prevent foot injuries.
For poor circulation in the feet (dark color, numbness), rest often with the
feet up. Follow the same recommendations as for varicose veins.

Acid indigestion and ‘heartburn’ often come from eating too much heavy or
greasy food or from drinking too much alcohol or coffee. These make the
stomach produce extra acid, which causes discomfort or a ‘burning’ feeling
in the stomach or mid chest. Some people mistake the chest pain, called
‘heartburn’, for a heart problem rather than indigestion. If the pain gets
worse when lying down, it is probably heartburn. Frequent or lasting acid
indigestion is a warning sign of an ulcer.
An ulcer is a chronic sore in the digestive system, usually caused by
bacteria. Too much acid in the stomach prevents it from healing.
It may cause a chronic, dull (sometimes sharp) pain in the pit of the
stomach. As with acid indigestion, often the pain lessens when the person
eats food or drinks a lot of water. The pain usually gets worse an hour or
more after eating, if the person misses a meal, or after he drinks alcohol or
eats fatty or spicy foods. Pain is often worse at night. Without a special
examination (endoscopy) it is often hard to know whether a person with
frequent stomach pain has an ulcer or not. If the ulcer is severe, it can
cause vomiting, sometimes with fresh blood, or with digested blood that
looks like coffee grounds. Stools with blood from an ulcer are usually black,
like tar.

WARNING: Some ulcers are painless or ‘silent’, and the first sign is blood
in vomit, or black, sticky stools. This is a medical emergency. The
person can quickly bleed to death. GET MEDICAL HELP FAST.
Prevention and Treatment:
Whether stomach or chest pain is caused by heartburn, acid indigestion, or
an ulcer, a few basic recommendations will probably help calm the pain
and prevent it from coming back.
♦ Do not eat too much. Eat small meals and eat frequent snacks between
meals. Eat mainly foods that seem to calm and not to cause the pain.
♦ Notice what foods or drinks make the pain worse and avoid them.
These usually include alcoholic drinks, coffee, spices, pepper, carbonated
drinks (soda, pop, colas), and fatty or greasy foods.
♦ If the heartburn is worse at night when lying flat, try sleeping with the
upper body somewhat raised.
An ulcer is an open sore in the stomach or gut.

♦ Drink a lot of water. Try to drink 2 big glasses of water both before and
after each meal. Also drink a lot of water frequently between meals. If the
pain comes often, keep drinking water like this, even in
those times when you have no pain.
♦ Avoid tobacco. Smoking or chewing tobacco increases stomach acid
and makes the problem worse.
♦ Take antacids. The best, safest antacids contain magnesium and
aluminum hydroxide. (See p. 381 for information, dose, and warnings about
different antacids.)

♦ If the above treatments do not work, you may have an ulcer. Use 2
medicines to treat the bacteria that causes the ulcer: either amoxicillin or
tetracycline. Also take cimetidine, or ranitidine to reduce the production of
acid in the stomach. These medicines help to calm the pain and heal the
♦ Aloe vera is a plant found in many countries that is said to heal ulcers.
Chop the spongy leaves into smallsoak them in water overnight, and then
drink one glass of the slimy, bitter water every 2 hours.
1. Some antacids, some antacids such as sodium bicarbonate (baking
and Alka-Seltzer may quickly calm acid indigestion, but soon cause more
acid. They should be used only for occasional indigestion, never for ulcers.
This is also true for antacids with calcium.
2. Some medicines, such as aspirin and iron salts, make ulcers worse.
Persons with signs of heartburn or acid indigestion should avoid them—use
acetaminophen instead of aspirin. Cortico–steroids also make ulcers
worse, or cause them (see p. 51).
It is important to treat an ulcer early. Otherwise it may lead to dangerous
bleeding or peritonitis. Ulcers sometimes get better if the person is careful
with what he eats and drinks. Anger, tension, and nervousness increase
acid in the stomach.
Learning to relax and keep calm will help. Treatment with antibiotics is
necessary to prevent the ulcer from returning.

Avoid having minor stomach problems get worse by not eating too
much, by not drinking much alcohol or coffee, and by not smoking or
using tobacco.
A goiter is a swelling or big lump on the throat that results from abnormal
growth of a gland called the thyroid. Most goiters are caused by a lack of
iodine in the diet. Also, a lack of iodine in a
pregnant woman’s diet sometimes causes babies to die or to be born
mentally slow and/or deaf (cretinism p. 318). This can happen even though
the mother does not have a goiter. Goiter and cretinism are most common
in mountain areas where there is little natural iodine in the soil, water, or
food. In these areas, eating a lot of certain foods like cassava makes it
more likely for a person to get a goiter.
How to prevent or cure a goiter and prevent cretinism:
Everyone living in areas where people get goiters should use iodized salt.
Use of iodized salt prevents the common kind of goiter and will help many
goiters go away. (Old, hard goiters can only be removed by surgery, but
this is usually not necessary.) If it is not possible to get iodized salt, use
tincture of iodine. Put 1 drop in a glass of water each day and drink. BE
CAREFUL: Too much tincture of iodine is poisonous. More than the
recommended amount of 1 drop a day can make a goiter worse. Keep the
bottle where children cannot reach it. lodized salt is much safer. Most
home cures for goiter do not do any good. However, eating crab and other
seafood can do some good because they contain iodine. Mixing a little
seaweed with food also adds iodine. But the easiest way is to use iodized

ALWAYS use iodized salt.
IODIZED SALT costs only a little more than other salt and is much better.
Also, if you live in an area where goiters are common, or you are beginning
to develop a goiter, try to avoid eating much cassava or cabbage.
Note: If a person with a goiter trembles a lot, is very nervous, and has eyes
that bulge out, this may be a different kind of goiter (toxic goiter). Seek
medical advice.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! If we all took more care to
eat well, to keep ourselves, our homes, and our villages clean, and to
be sure that our children are vaccinated, we could stop most sicknesses
before they start. we discussed eating well. In this chapter we talk about
cleanliness and vaccination.
Cleanliness is of great importance in the prevention of many kinds of
infections— infections of the gut, the skin, the eyes, the lungs, and the
whole body. Personal cleanliness (or hygiene) and public cleanliness (or
sanitation) are both important. Many common infections of the gut are
spread from one person to another because of poor hygiene and poor
sanitation. Germs and worms (or their eggs) are passed by the thousands
in the stools or feces (shit) of infected persons. These are carried from the
feces of one person to the mouth of another by dirty fingers or
contaminated food or water. Diseases that are spread or transmitted from
feces-tomouth in this way, include:
• diarrhea and dysentery (caused by amebas and bacteria)

• intestinal worms (several types)
• hepatitis, typhoid fever, and cholera
• certain other diseases, like polio, are sometimes spread this same way
The way these infections are transmitted can be very direct. For example:
A child who has worms and who forgot to wash his hands after his last
bowel movement, offers his friend a cracker. His fingers, still dirty with his
own stool, are covered with hundreds of tiny worm eggs (so small they
cannot be seen). Some of these worm eggs stick to the cracker. When his
friend eats the cracker, he swallows the worm eggs, too. Soon the friend
will also have worms. His mother may say this is because he ate sweets.
But no, it is because he ate shit!
