The production program reinforces the belief that as academic disciplines, theatre and dance
must be intellectual and practical. Serious training and intense interaction between faculty
and students provide a collaborative rather than competitive atmosphere in the department. Choreographers
Students are challenged as artists in the studio and classroom, working closely with

Moving Stories harnesses the dynamic expression of the human
body. The poetry of movement replaces words in an evolving
landscape of imagery and emotion. This year’s program features
dances by eleven talented student choreographers. As movement
enthusiasts, they have chosen to investigate their creative visions
kinetically. They are learning to become adept at communicating
ideas via the infinitely malleable elements of space, time, and energy.
Their persistent dedication to the craft of dance making is one
reason why Muhlenberg’s dance program has been so successful.

As Artistic Director, it has been a pleasure to watch the students’
imaginations soar and their dances take shape. This year’s concert
offers an exciting variety of themes. From gender inequality, to
social networking in the digital age, to childhood fantasy fractured,
the range is both impressive and relatable. A diversity of experience
and eclectic training is apparent and adds a multi-dimensional
                                       richness to the works.

As you watch, the choreographers and I invite you to open
yourselves to the poetic power contained in these works. Dance
resonates beyond the rational, linear lives we lead, and targets
the deep recesses of our minds and hearts. Let the metaphors
and symbolism wash over you. Be open to the associations and
                                       revelations they may bring.

Sit down, settle back, and enjoy!
