Platform Statement

As I look toward the end of a long and satisfying career in libraries, I believe that the
North Carolina Library Association should exist for the promotion and celebration of
libraries and library staff in the state.
NORTH CAROLINA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
2011-2013 ELECTION SLATE

NCLA should provide the place to blend the expertise of seasoned library staff with the
new ideas and energy of those just entering the profession and for everyone else in
between. New energy, new ideas and new faces can only strengthen the profession and
the Association. My goal as NCLA Chair-Elect/Chair would be to engage as many of our
“new” library staff as possible in planning for the future of our organization and its
efforts. Using the best of tradition and a progressive vision for the future, we need to
move the Association forward.

In addition to cultivating new members and pursuing new directions, we need to
investigate our organizational outline to determine if its current committee structure and
bylaws remain relevant in today’s library arena. We need to strengthen our financial
situation, thinking beyond the immediate economy to the future. We need to celebrate
who we are and what we know we do as librarians. (After all, don’t we improve the
overall quality of life for all of the state’s residents, visitors, students, teachers, families,
and children?) We need to establish an organization where we appreciate one another
with respect and affection for our differences. Finally, we need to have a bit of fun as we
work together.

I will work for you as President-Elect/President to build community within our profession
through NCLA and to develop strategies to remain relevant in the future. I would
appreciate and be honored by your support.
