An Investigation into the way ICT is used by TDR
TD Rea’s Dental Clinic is a growing dental practice
based in Newry, Northern Ireland. It is made up of a
small team of dentists and dental support staff who
thrive on the principle of providing high quality dental
care in surroundings which are comfortable and
relaxing. The practice aims to provide its patients with
the most up-to-date and innovative dental treatments
and accepts both private and NHS patients. It has also recently put in place a
budgeting system for private patients to break down the costs of large-scale
TD Rea the practice owner was keen to emphasise that a dental practice is in
a way just like any other business. Although it obviously specialises in the
area of dental care and this means that some very specialised equipment will
be required like any other business there is still a lot of administrative work to
be done and ICT plays a large part in helping with the management of this
type of work.
The uses for ICT in TD Rea’s Dental Clinic

schedule the dentist’s day for them and keep patients dental records up-to-

Access treatment notes for each patient so they are available for the
dentist when they need to treat a patient.
The dental nurse works very closely with the dentist during treatments and
sometimes will work with patients on their own to allow the dentist time to
carry out other tasks. The dental nurse uses ICT to:

Updating details in patients’ treatment records.
Is responsible for the general financial management of the practice, ordering
of tools, equipment and drugs etc. It is the responsibility of the practice
manager to organise the staff rota and pay bills. The practice manager uses
ICT to do the following:

Re-order new tools and drugs.

with them. They will be assisted by the dental nurses but also make use of
ICT in the following ways:
