There is some evidence that vitamin C can help with cataracts and it is somewhat
interesting. So what the heck are cataracts and why should you read this article?
These are both great questions.
To understand what a cataract is picture trying to see out of a cloudy window.
Now imagine that vision is your eye sight and is permanent. How do you think
that is going to influence reading, watching a good movie or just seeing a
beautiful landscape?
Sure nobody really takes this stuff serious until it happens to them but the scary
fact is that many people get this condition. In fact by the time someone reaches
80 there is above a 50% chance they have either had cataracts or had surgery
related to the condition.
When it comes to eye problems can you guess what the number 1 culprit is? Yep
cataracts cause more vision problems around the world than any other eye
disease. The good news is that surgery can help and is safe. Can you guess what
the bad news to surgery is?
Well the not so good news is that it can be expensive and poor people may not be
able to afford it. This leads us into how to prevent this eye ailment in the first
place.
One idea that has gained some traction recently is with consuming vitamin C. This
vitamin is an essential nutrient that is required for all kinds of chemical reactions
in the human body. Have you ever heard of something called scurvy?
Scurvy is due to someone not having enough vitamin C and was common in sailors
in the 17th century. Now it’s not as common today but many people still are
deficient in this vitamin. The symptoms of scurvy include a fever, weak muscles,
paralysis, bleeding of the eyes, gums and loosened teeth. Death can occur due to
this condition but it’s not as common.
Due to vitamin C’s role in improving the immune system and restoring collagen
some studies show it reduces the risk of this disease. Collagen is a protein that
connects tissues and bones which is why it’s common for people to have loose
teeth if they don’t get enough of this mineral.
This nutrient is also an antioxidant and prevents free radical damage. Since free
radical damage may cause this eye ailment it does make sense on how it can
protect the eye.
In one study researchers looked at 5,600 adults above the age of 60. The study
found that 73 percent had cataracts. The study also discovered that the risk of
cataracts was nearly 40% lower with people that had the highest level of this
vitamin.
To be fair another study showed that there was no relation to vitamin C intake
and cataracts. In conclusion this nutrient may be of help but it’s not guarantee
but someone still should take it with all the benefits it gives.
Someone can get vitamin C by eating fruits or by taking a dietary supplement. Not
all dietary supplements are equal and some can do more harm than good. To
