Welcome Bro. Leto
The trustees and board of directors are pleased to announce the appointment of
Brother Thomas R. Leto, CFC as president of Iona Prep effective July 1, 2010.
Br. Leto was the president of Bishop Hendricken, a high school with 930 boys in
Warwick, Rhode Island for the past eleven years. During his tenure the school
completed a 33,000 square foot addition that includes twelve classrooms, science labs,
a digital production studio, music studios, and a 350 seat theater. He was instrumental
in adding athletic fields, press boxes, and a beautiful prayer garden.
Br. Leto lives every day in the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice and is guided by the
mission of the Christian Brothers. Beyond his commitment to outstanding academics,
competitive athletics, and a rich arts curriculum, Br. Leto believes that service learning
is a focal point for students; and that the students should know that they are part of a
larger Edmund Rice community. Beyond the service projects the students participate
in their own community, the school sponsors four service immersion trips a year to
places such as the Appalachian Highlands in Kentucky; Christian Brothers Schools in
Bonita Springs, Florida and Lima, Peru in the impoverished Canto Grande area; and
this summer they journeyed to Kenya, Africa. Most recently, Br. Leto traveled with
the Bishop Hendricken Choir to Rome, where the group sang for Pope Benedict XVI.
A native New Yorker, Br. Leto holds degrees from Iona College, New York
University and the University of Dayton. Throughout his teaching and coaching years,
Br. Leto held positions at Iona Grammar School, Catholic Memorial in Boston, Rice
High School in NYC, and Essex Catholic in New Jersey. Prior to his most recent
appointment he served as president of All Hallows in the Bronx.
John Verni, chair of the board of directors stated, “We are thrilled to have Br. Leto
as our president. Br. Leto brings a wealth of experience, talent and energy, which the
president’s position demands. He has exemplary leadership and motivational skills to
build upon the excellence at Iona Prep in the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.”

President’s Message
Summer, 2010

Dear Alumni and Friends,
In the fall of 1977 I began an unbelievable journey – a journey that
has brought me to more places, introduced to me many different people,
had me doing things I never would have attempted, thrust me into
situations I would have otherwise avoided, encouraged me to step outside
of my comfort zone, and energized me to bring the gospel message to whatever
community I found myself ministering. In 1977, I entered the Congregation of
Christian Brothers to begin a life that I have come to love, a life I have come to enjoy,
a life I have come to cherish. Now, thirty three years later, I find myself on the campus
of Iona Preparatory School and asked by our God to take the leadership of this
wonderful community and move it forward – always with an eye to spreading Jesus’
message of salvation! What a challenge – what an opportunity!
I arrived on campus on Monday, June 28th and immediately felt welcomed by
everyone I met. The Brothers’ Community went to great lengths opening their doors
to my arrival – as well as the many boxes and bags that accompanied me. The Board
of Directors called, sent notes and asked if there was anything they could do to ease
the transition from Bishop Hendricken High School to The Prep. Alumni from near
and wide sent congratulatory notes pledging their continued support. Faculty
members dropped by to say a warm word of encouragement and congratulations on
my appointment and arrival. Staff encouraged me to get to know their beloved Prep
and all that goes on here. Students stopped me in the hallways, introduced themselves
and welcomed me to their “home away from home.”
I very much look forward to my next few years at Iona Prep. From what I have
already experienced (and considering this is the “slow season” I am in for quite a
ride!), Iona Prep is an alive and exciting place to be. Everyone I have met thus far is
actively engaged in continually building our community and moving the mission of
our school forward. The next few years are crucial for the future success of our school.
As we move toward our centennial celebration in 2016, we need to assess and plan,
encourage and evaluate, target and execute – all with firm purpose to keeping alive
the Spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers and the vision
of Brother Joseph F. Doorley, founder and first Headmaster of Iona Prep. We’ve quite
a bit of work ahead of us to maintain the preeminence of The Prep as the school of
choice for young men in lower Westchester – but I know, that together, we will forge
a great future for our school.
I look forward to meeting you in the very near future….
God bless,

Bro. Thomas R. Leto, CFC

Principal’s Message
August 2010

Dear Friends of Iona Prep,
The summer season in many schools is a downtime but not at Iona Prep. Over the
past couple of months, students have participated in international service trips and
learning experiences. They have given their time to supervise campers at our Edmund
Rice Camp and have worked at our Student-Athlete Camp and our sports camps.
Many have accumulated hours of service in their local communities. Throughout the
magazine you will see evidence of the ongoing activity that is part of the life of Iona.
The Class of 2010 has continued our tradition of academic excellence. They
received in excess of $13.5 million in college scholarships. We wish them much success
as they continue their education at schools. We are very proud of them, and thankful
to the faculty for their dedication and commitment to the students.
As we look at the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brothers’
Education we see an opportunity for the school community to reflect on the mission
of the school, how we witness to its Catholic identity, how we approach service
opportunities, how we foster a community of faith, and how we pursue excellence
in all things. Our focus this year will be to continue to use these guidelines in our
decision-making. As we welcome over 200 freshmen to Iona’s Class of 2014 we are
humbled by the charge we have been given to provide them and our other students
with an education that prepares them for our changing world.
It is a great honor to once again be principal of Iona Prep. Working with Brother
Leto will be both a blessing and a challenge to ensure that Iona remains the school of
which we are so proud. I ask for your prayers and support for our endeavors.

Alumni Association Activities - The Iona Prep Alumni Association
was quite busy in 2009-2010. The year began with a “tailgate” at the
varsity football game against Bergen Catholic at Giant Stadium. Over 400
alumni, family and friends gathered in anticipation of the team’s big game
under the lights at the stadium. Although the weather did not cooperate,
fun was had by all who attended. Special thanks to the Mara Family for
providing us the space for the “pre-game” event.

The post-holiday season was celebrated by fifty alums who gathered at
Butterfield 8 in NYC for an “after-work” reception. Many came together
for some conversation and camaraderie. All agreed that it was a great
night and we need more events “like these” to keep people connected.
We are grateful to John Gazzola ‘99 for hosting the event.

It’s not spring without the NCAA finals and many alums were able to watch the game and smoke cigars together
again this year. Thanks to Perry DiNapoli ’82, the venue was changed to The Olde Stone Mill in Tuckahoe. While
the venue was new, the traditions were the same: a great steak dinner; a cigar or two and some ‘wagering’ as to
who would win.

Claude Gianino ’53 is living in Ashburn, Virginia and is enjoying his retirement. He was sorry that he could
not attend the Hall of Fame, which honored his fellow football buddies, Hank Margotta and Mike Ward. Claude
remembers fondly his days at the Prep and living in Westchester… he sends his best regards to all.

Brendan Murphy ’83 is the director of global security at Paulson & Co, Inc in NYC, Brendan was the CSBC
operations manager at Deutsche Bank, NA before joining Paulson. Since graduation from the Prep, Brendan
earned his BS at Iona College and a Juris Doctorate at Pace University School of Law. He was a member of
the Westchester County Police Dept. and Town of Harrison Police until his retirement in 2006 at the rank of
lieutenant. He served briefly as the acting chief of police in Harrison. Brendan and his wife, Dina have four
children and live in Harrison.

Scott Roff ’01 has just re-enlisted for his third tour in the Marine Corp. He was also promoted to sergeant.

We are grateful to the Alumni Association for coordinating these events
and we also thank the alumni who provided the atmosphere to enjoy
these three great events. This year, promises to be even better as we
continue to provide opportunities to get involved at the Prep. If you
are interested in helping with any of our events or would like to help
with other things such as reunions or Career Week, please contact Nicky Trizano ’09 a freshman at Drexel

him well as he enjoys his retirement with wife of 50 years, JoAnn.

An Era of Silent Comedy, Slapstick Humor - The Prep Players entertained
audiences with three performances of a play unlike any other performed in recent
years. Silent Laughter is a unique play reminiscing an era when silent comedy and
slapstick humor of actors Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were
popular. The show was silent- the actors lip synced words that were shown on a
projector for the audience to read. According to moderator and faculty member
Charles Sloat ’86, “I had a lot of fun producing the play. This was truly a great
group of students. They were very cooperative and enthusiastic allowing for a
wonderful production.”

Mothers’ Auxiliary - With 160 members, the Mothers’ Auxiliary hosted
many events to benefit Iona Prep. In addition to hosting the Mom Prom, they
provided refreshments for ring night, the college fair, and the honors assemblies.

Spring Golf Outing - William J. Falvey ’86 organized the sixth
annual spring alumni golf outing. The event took place at Westchester
Hills Country Club in White Plains, NY. In addition to a great day of
golf the outing provided our alumni an opportunity to socialize while
supporting Iona’s mission. Many thanks to Bill and all those whose
time and efforts provided another opportunity for our alums to renew
friendships while reliving memories of their days at the Prep.

Alumni Award Felix J. Petrillo ’89 - Each year during the graduation
ceremony the alumni award is presented to an alum in recognition of his
commitment to Iona Prep. The recipient demonstrates hard work, untiring
efforts and strengthens Iona’s mission and vision. This year’s alumni award
was presented to Felix J. Petrillo ’89. After graduating from the Prep, Felix
earned a business degree from Boston College. Currently Felix is the vice
president at Petro Real Estate, and is on Iona Prep’s campus everyday
during the football season as the assistant coach of the varsity team.
Legacy and tradition are synonymous with the Petrillo family as Felix’s
grandfather, father and brother are all graduates of the Prep. Felix and his
wife Laura are the proud parents of Felix, Jr. and Katherine.
Congratulations, Felix!

In keeping the tradition of the Christian Brothers, one of the objectives of the mission of
Iona Prep is encouraging students to become active in outreach and service opportunities.
One of the Essential Elements of a Christian Brother education states that we should “stand in
solidarity who those marginalized by poverty and injustice.” During the Easter break several
faculty members, students and alums traveled to New Orleans to work with Operation
Helping Hands, a volunteer organization that assists in the rebuilding of homes destroyed by
Hurricane Katrina. The group worked at two sites, scraping, priming, and painting houses in
need of work. The students agreed that it was a worthwhile experience and were surprised
at the amount of work that still needed to be done after five years.

Service trip to New Orleans –
                                                                                Operation Helping Hands.

Edmund Rice Camp - Campers from Sacred Heart parishes in
Manhattan and Mt. Vernon attended camp on the Iona Prep
campus while enjoying activities led by student counselors from the
Edmund Rice Society. Faculty member Br. Robert W. Harris ’62 is
          the moderator.

Immersion trip to Peru - For many students summer means cavorting on a beach or traveling with family and friends. This
past summer, twelve students and six faculty members journeyed to Lima, Peru for Iona Prep’s first service immersion trip to
South America to visit Christian Brothers’ schools. Fundraising events supported by the entire school community took place over
the course of the year and this trip is an extension of that great support. The 18 Prep representatives brought the good wishes of
our entire community to Peru. According to Maureen Kiers, director of mission integration, “the students experienced a sense
of a different culture and how others live while delivering the message of Blessed Edmund Rice in a different environment. “
Students noted on the blog, “From the school in Canto Grande to the medical mission just outside of Lima, we have
witnessed many things…. We built a house for one of the students and knew of the terrible conditions that he lived in, and
were astonished by the ever-present joy in their hearts.”

The Polar Plunge- Iona Prep “plungers” arrived on a Saturday morning in December in the cold freezing rain to participate
in the annual polar plunge hosted by the Special Olympics. Faculty member and director of mission integration, Maureen Kiers
organized the effort to raise money for Team Iona, benefitting the Special Olympics organization. “I would definitely do this again.
It is a really fun experience and I would recommend it to anybody who has never done it before,” said senior Felipe Torruella.

The Midnight Run - This past fall Iona Prep has its first midnight run of the school year. Iona Prep students traveled to
Manhattan and served breakfast and provided clothing and toiletries to over 30 people. Faculty member Dana Pisani described
it as “a huge success.”

Hall of Fame/Challenge Grant

The Iona Prep Hall of Fame formally recognizes and publicly honors those who have
distinguished themselves in a variety of endeavors, those who have contributed significantly to
the growth and spirit of the Prep and those whose lives continue to reflect the charism of
Blessed Edmund Rice and the teachings of the Christian Brothers. On April 29, 2010 the 2nd
Hall of Fame Dinner-Celebrate our Stars took place. This year’s inductees were former faculty
member Br. J. Kevin Devlin, CFC, alum parents Catherine and Richard Falvey, and alums Hank
Margotta ’52, posthumously, Bob Naversen ’59, posthumously and Mike Ward ’51. Over 300
guests enjoyed the evening while celebrating the great accomplishments of the inductees.
During the evening Master of Ceremonies George Teasdale ’86 announced that in honor of
Hank Margotta, Paul & MC McEvoy ’71 have established the Hank Margotta Memorial
Scholarship Fund with an initial donation of $50,000. Hank conducted his life with discipline
and integrity in a selfless manner. As a faculty member, husband and father, Hank lived his life
in the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice and the mission of the Christian Brothers. To honor
and celebrate Hank's commitment to Iona Prep, this scholarship will be awarded in his
memory for student-athletes who request financial assistance.
The McEvoys have generously issued a Challenge Grant. This means that if we are able to
raise $50,000 during our fiscal year July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011, Paul & MC will match that
