We’ve written three narrative essays, changing the assignments just a little each
time, but basically working on skills that are necessary to telling a story clearly and
compellingly. Before we move on to our next set of assignments, which will
require different skills, we need to look back and review what we’ve done so far.
So, you need to write a summative commentary, and I need to look at it and all
your past assignments in order to assign a grade.
Here are some of the topics you might address in your commentary, but please feel
free to talk to me about other ideas that arise as you look at these assignments:
What do you feel are your strengths as a narrative writer? What do you feel you
understood as the main task of the writer, and how well do you think you did that?
What skills did you improve on in writing narratives?
What do you feel are your weaknesses as a narrative writer? What areas do you
feel you need improvement in? What skills do you wish we would have talked
more about in class? What are some areas that you wanted to try, but you feel you
1) weren’t given the opportunity or 2) were too scared to try.
Look back at the first assignment we did in which you talked about yourself as a
writer and what you hoped to get out of the class. Are you getting what you want
to out of this part of the class, or are there things you or I could be doing better?
Whatever applies to you in these questions, write about it or anything else on your
mind. Just talk to me on paper.
Finally, after reviewing all this, I will assign you a grade, the part of the job that I
hate the most. You know that if I could legitimately grade you on effort, you
would all get an A+. Unfortunately, that’s not the way things work. Please get this
commentary and your three narrative essays to me in the folder provided.
This assignment is due no later than __________________________________.
