Terry Witherington
Master of Science in Nursing- Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program
461 21st Avenue South
Vanderbilt University
Nashville, TN 37240

Dear Dr. Witherington,

I am writing you because I would like to be considered as a candidate for entry into
Vanderbilt’s Masters of Science in Nursing program, with a specialty in pediatric primary
care. I am a student at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville, and will graduate in May
2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition. After reviewing your program on the
Vanderbilt website, I was immediately interested in your pediatric primary care specialty.
I was very impressed after attending your open house on October 6th.

As I mentioned previously, the pediatric primary care specialty is what interests most
about Vanderbilt’s MSN bridge program. Obtaining my degree in Nutrition has showed
me that want to treat a patient holistically, and I am best suited for working with children
and adolescents. I have travelled to Haiti twice with a medical team, and was able to gain
experience working in several orphanages and tent cities. It was during these two trips to
Haiti that I realized my desire to work as a nurse.

My academic background, as well as my volunteer service and employment experience
qualifies me for your program. As you will see from my resume, I have also worked in
health education in the inner city of Knoxville. Working with these children has shown
me my desire to treat patients in low-income areas. I have worked educating children
with the NEAT program, an after school program that teaches children basic nutrition
lessons. I intern with Allison Maurer, the sports’ dietician at the University of
Tennessee. As her intern the past two years, I have gained experience using the BOD
POD, taking anthropometric measurements, and have analyzed and recorded 24-hour
food recalls for athletes. I am passionate about health prevention and education in young
people, and I believe Vanderbilt’s program will best equip me to serve in the community.

Again, I hope you will consider me when selecting applicants for the Masters of Science
in Nursing pediatric primary care program. My experience, combined with my
enthusiasm, energy, and work ethic, makes me an excellent fit for this program.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
