Anonymous Message Board Post Ignites Author's Dream
Tony McFadden is the author of six novels, all set in the exotic, sometimes dangerous places
he has travelled in his work as a telecommunications engineer. None of this would have
materialized without the words of an anonymous message board poster.
After fifteen years thinking about writing, Tony McFadden had nothing to show for it. It took
a comment from an anonymous poster on a message board to get it all started. In the three
years since, McFadden has written more than 500,000 published words.
McFadden has travelled extensively during his career as a telecommunications engineer and
spent time in potential terrorist hotspots. And while the anonymous poster was wrong
about the novel being able to “write itself”, he was right in suggesting McFadden’s work
experience and travels should be the foundation of his novels.
Daly Battles: The Fall of Pyongyang is McFadden’s latest title. Set in the isolated capital of
North Korea, it followsMatt Daly, owner of a telecommunications company who is in
Pyongyang to develop North Korea’s wireless communications system. On the surface, it
appears to be an easing of restrictions, but Matt and his business partner soon find
themselves mixed up in something more sinister.
A keen follower of the rules governing story structure, McFadden is also known for his
deconstructions of the plot and storyline of popular movies including Scream (1996), True
Lies (1994) and Air Force One (1997). He even deconstructs popular advertisements. In his
writing, McFadden uses this approach to improve his work, deconstructing it then rebuilding
McFadden’s other titles include Matt’s War (set in Malaysia and Australia), Book ‘Em – an
Eamonn Shute Mystery and Family Matters (both set in Miami), G’Day LA and G’Day USA.
Originally from Canada, McFadden has lived in Florida (Ft. Lauderdale and Miami), Virginia,
Georgia, California, the US Virgin Islands, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. He now calls
Australia home, where he says he ‘braves’ the ‘harsh’ winters.
