                                                                  MODEL UNITED NATIONS
                                                                  This year we had nine students attend Model United Na-
                                                                  tions hosted by Lehigh University. There were several
                                                                  hundred students from the Lehigh Valley that attended
                                                                  the event. Of our nine students, four were recognized for
                                                                  their outstanding participation:

                                                                          Meredith Heckman - 1st Runner Up,
                                                                          Best Delegate, Committee for Women and Children
                                                                          Emma Pilker - 1st Place,
                                                                          Best Resolution, General Assembly
Jordan Smith, a senior at Nazareth Area High
School, was recently accepted into the Pennsylvania                       Tess Hamsher - 1st Place,
Music Educators Association All-State Chorus. Jordan                      Best Delegate, UN Environmental Program
will be participating in the All-State Festival at Hershey,               Erin Adams - 1st Place,
Pennsylvania from April 14th – 16th. While there, Jordan

will sing with 200 other top vocalists from the state of
Pennsylvania. The choir will be under the direction of Dr.
Christopher Kiver, music professor at Penn State Univer-
sity. The All-State Chorus will present their concert on
Saturday, April 16th at 10:15AM at the Good Shepherd
Chapel, Lancaster Bible College. This is Jordan’s third

time successfully auditioning into the All-State Chorus.
Jordan has also played Varsity Baseball and Varsity Golf
during all four years of his high school career. He is also
the recipient of the 2011 Scholar-Athlete award in golf.           The Java Joint has added flavored teas to the

Congratulations to the Nazareth Area High School Science
Olympiad team. The team recently competed in two com-
petitions – The Lehigh Valley Conference Science Olympiad
at Northampton Area Community College and the Regional
Science Olympiad competition at Kutztown University.

The students who earned medals in the Northampton Com-
munity College competition include Caitlyn Gary and Craig
Welker who received a gold medal in the category of dis-
ease detectives and a bronze medal for ecology. A silver
medal was awarded to David Yerger and Mike Burns in the
Chemistry Lab competition and a gold medal was awarded
to Mike Garrett and Brandon Talmadge for the mousetrap
car event.

At Kutztown University, Rachel Kosciusko and Sinmi
Opeyemi took a silver medal in the anatomy and physiolo-
gy competition, Kate Polles and Sinmi Opeyemi won silver
in the helicopter event, and a silver medal was awarded,
once again, to Mike Garrett and Brandon Talmadge for their
outstanding construction of a mousetrap vehicle.
