Public Affairs Department • 97 Dafoe Road•Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada R3T 2N2 • Phone 204-474-8346 • Fax 204-474-7631 • www.umanitoba.ca/public_affairs/12 February, 2007 Public Affairs University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Canada Contact: Kim Corneillie 204-789-3427 MENTAL ILLNESS EXAMINED THROUGH ART Art and medicine fuse together at the University of Manitoba Medical Art Show Tonight, medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, will showcase their newly-explored artistic talents at the 6th annual Medical Art Show, focusing on the theme: “Mental Illness: Perception versus Reality.” The goal of the art show is to blend two unrelated disciplines: art and medicine, in a way that medical students and those in the health care profession can tangibly see that providing health care requires more than knowledge and understanding of the science of the disease. First and foremost, medical students participating in the art show gain insight into the issues faced by mentally ill patients. Each student met with members of their community who were consumers of mental health services, and have used this experience as an inspiration to create their own original art work. Future doctors and health care professionals must demonstrate compassion, humanism and commitment to a high level of quality care, at the same level they themselves would expect to receive. The art show is a means for health care professionals to visualize the connection between their care and the ailments they treat. The University of Manitoba Medical Art Show will celebrate its “Opening Night Gala” on Monday, February 12, 2007, from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Brodie Atrium, 727 McDermot Avenue. The show will open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm daily. The show will be on exhibit at the Gosa Gallery, University of Manitoba, Fort Garry Campus from February 25th – 29th. For more information, contact: Kimberley Corneillie, Public Affairs Officer, Bannatyne Campus, 204-789-3427, or two of the medicine students Peter Klippenstein at 783-0829 and Sean Udow at 896-9050.
