                                  ABOUT TARLETON
Tarleton State University was founded in 1899 as John Tarleton College through a bequest by
John Tarleton. He was a pioneer Erath County citizen. Tarleton State University is one of the
oldest institutions of higher learning in Texas. While it originally granted degrees, John Tarleton
College became a junior college-academy program in 1906. Tarleton State University became a
part of the Texas A & M University System in 1917. It was known as John Tarleton Agricultural
College until 1949 when the name was changed to Tarleton State College to better reflect
Tarleton's growth in the field of liberal arts. In 1959 the Texas legislature expanded Tarleton to a
four-year degree granting institution and changed the institution's name to Tarleton State
University in 1973. The University is located approximately 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth,
100 miles southeast of Abilene, and 85 miles northwest of Waco. One of the most striking
features of Tarleton is its spacious 144-acre campus, which is located in the heart of Stephenville.
Featuring malls, open spaces, and beautifully landscaped buildings, the campus is dominated by
majestic oak and pecan trees which create a warm atmosphere for living and learning.
Stephenville, a city of 15,000, is recognized as one of the best small towns in America. Tarleton
State University provides the stability and resources that only a state-assisted institution can.
Tarleton continues its commitment to providing the best classroom learning, the latest library and
research tools, and practical and professional experience.

                        DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY

      GENERAL ADMISSION GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES

semester in which the last of the 60 hours of undergraduate work were taken.

student within 12 hours of obtaining his/her degree who wants to begin work in the
           Graduate College.

Appeals must be made in writing to the Graduate Dean.

        1. All applicants will be required to submit an essay as a part of the application
package. All former students who are re-applying because of absence from the

The essay provided by the applicant is to be from 200-300 words. The topic for the
essay should address “personal goals for graduate study and career goals.”
        2. If the essay is not submitted as a part of the application package, the student will be
conditionally admitted until the sample is submitted and evaluated. Any further
