Manchester Art Gallery General Information for Press Manchester Art Gallery re-opened in May 2002, following a four year £35 million expansion and refurbishment programme. It attracts around 300,000 visitors per year and is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the region. Located in the heart of the city, Manchester Art Gallery provides a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere and a wide range of attractions, including an internationally renowned collection of fine art, a hi-tech interactive children’s gallery, one of the most important collections of decorative arts, craft and design in the country and a permanent exhibition space dedicated to Manchester’s artistic achievements past and present. Manchester Art Gallery offers: A renowned fine art collection: A collection of great international importance, especially renowned for its nineteenth century British paintings – including works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Ford Madox Brown. Eighteenth century and the Romantic period pieces include Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs and Richard Wilson. The twentieth Century collection features works by Henry Moore, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and David Hockney. The gallery also owns almost 10,000 works on paper including a magnificent collection of Turner watercolours. The Gallery of Craft and Design: The Gallery of Craft and Design opened in 2003, and is housed in the exquisite former private theatre at the very top of the 19th century Athenaeum building. It contains one of the most important collections of decorative art, craft and design in the country. Approximately 1,000 objects are on show, including ceramics, glass, metalwork, furniture, costumes, dolls’ houses and armour. The objects come from all over the world and feature works by Picasso, Rene Lalique, Faberge, Terence Conran and Rachel Whiteread. Items range from an ancient Egyptian alabaster jar used for storing the lungs after death to recently acquired international contemporary furniture and lighting. The Gallery also features a tactile ‘handling trail’ – especially designed for visually impaired people, who can touch works of art made from wood, clay, glass and metal made by specialist craftspeople. Interpretation appears in Braille and tactile lettering. The CIS Manchester Gallery: This space showcases Manchester’s creative achievements in art and design, past and present. Works by LS Lowry and Adolphe Valette are complemented by those of artists and designers working in the city today, such as Jim Medway, Liam Spencer and Adele Myers. Themed displays include Attitude, featuring works about political protest to the ‘Madchester’ music scene and Made in Manchester, featuring objects made by Mancunians over the past two hundred years. The Clore Interactive Gallery: This gallery, aimed at children and their families, features interactive exhibits offering a hands-on introduction to the main Gallery’s collections. Exhibits include a mini-theatre showing ghost stories told by a character from a 19th century painting, and an interactive video game based on a suit of 18th century Japanese armour, which allows youngsters to bring to life a Samurai warrior. New interactives are due to be developed and included in early 2006. This gallery is supported by the Clore Duffield Foundation. A great shopping experience: the Gallery’s shop has been voted one of the top five gallery shops in the UK. It sells a wide range of art books, posters and prints, cards, jewellery and gifts relating to the collection, as well as books and products for children. Our award-winning, self-service Gallery Café offers fresh, tasty food for all the family. Visitors can enjoy a variety of drinks, simply prepared hot meals, fresh soup, sandwiches, hot baguettes and cakes. Children’s pick-and-mix lunch boxes and chilled drinks are also available.
