							REHABILITATION

  The boring bit!
REHABILITATION

Its up to us to make it
interesting/stimulating!
REHABILITATION

 It is the graded return
 to activity after injury
REHABILITATION
  Three main phases
        •Early
         •Mid
         •Late
EARLY PHASE

At this stage, active treatment is
still a big part of the daily routine
            for the athlete
EARLY PHASE

At this stage the normal function
of the injured area will not be
       possible because of
  pain/discomfort/dysfunction
EARLY PHASE
The therapist will be trying to
modify the acute inflammatory
response to the injury, so that
 excessive scarring does not
prevent full function returning
          optimally.
EARLY PHASE

Scarring is inevitable, but should
 be encouraged to contribute to
     the strength of the part.
EARLY PHASE

If you apply a force to fibrous
tissue, it lines up in the lines of
that force, and contributes to the
  tensile strength of the healing
tissue, preventing further injury.
    MID PHASE

As the mobility of the injured
part increases, more force may be
applied to it to effect recovery.
This is the phase where, e.g.
        jogging may begin.
    MID PHASE

    As mid-phase goes on, the
injured part will become stronger,
      and regain flexibility.
   MID PHASE

When this stage is reached, the
athlete can be said to be moving
   to late phase rehabilitation.
  LATE PHASE
  Late stage rehabilitation. Will
   start with very simple uni-
 directional movements at slow
speed, usually in a field situation.
 LATE PHASE
  As time moves on,speed will
increase, then more complicated
    movements will become
  involved, until the athlete is
    mimicking normal play.
  LATE PHASE
Ideally, the player should then be
involved in a competitive setting,
but at a lower level than normal,
and for, perhaps, half a game.
 LATE PHASE
  After this a gradual, logical,
return to full activity should be
           attainable.
REHABILITATION
IS IT ALWAYS SO STRAIGHT
        FORWARD?

         NO!
REHABILITATION
REHABILITATION
REHABILITATION

What would you do if the injured part
became painful the day after a
      rehabilitation session?
REHABILITATION

Great to see them back, but they
  couldn’t last the whole game.
               Why?
REHABILITATION
Part of rehabilitation is to make sure
         they are FIT to return.
•Cardiovascular
•Flexibility
•Psychologically
REHABILITATION
  Always aiming for the optimum
straight line. If the line is a bit
zig-zag, and the player knows and
understands why, you should be all
right. Easy to play it safe.
