Wh t is Code?

A Code is a standard that has been adopted by one or
more governmental bodies and has the force of law
                C d
     e.g. ASME Code.
One can refer ASME Code as ASME Standard when it

     has no enforcement of law
Code will not retroactive, except errata.

What is Standard?
Standard is a set of technical definitions and guidelines,
“how to” instructions for designers, manufacturers and
     users.
Standards promote safety, reliability, productivity and
efficiency in almost every industry that relies on engineering
                      equipment.
     components or equipment
Standards can run from a few paragraphs to hundreds of
pages, and are written by experts with knowledge and
expertise in a particular field who sit on many committees
Standards do not enforce of law but become mandatory
when they have been incorporated into a business contract
        incorporated into regulations.
     or i di l i
Their use is voluntary because they serve as guidelines.

ASME,
ASME Code cases

Formulated by ASME Code committees for “special situation” so called a Case.
     Clarify existing Code requirements.
Provide rule for new materials and new form of constructions when not covered by
                    rules urgent.
existing Code rules, when need is urgent
Code case have a limited life, usually 3 years, unless the Committee reaffirms them for
another 3 years or may also be annulled at any time by the committee.
Using Code cases is not mandatory. They are permissive only (“It is the opinion of the
committee that……). They are an extension of the Code.
When a Code Case is used, the Code Case number must be listed on the Data Report.
Effective immediately upon ASME approval. (to provide for the early implementation of
new or revised Code rule since it need only two or three months to approve it!!!).
Can be become a part of the Code after gain experience over a period of time with new
               construction, them
forms of construction or new design rules before changing the Code to include them.
The ASME published Code Cases in two Code cases books: Boilers and Pressure
     Vessel, and Nuclear Components.

U 4 Unit of Measurement

Allow mixing of different measuring units.
Only one system is expected in all aspect of design. However, the local customary units may
be used to design and document of that component. Similarly, for proprietary components.
                                                     equation.
Only one system shall be used for a single equation
When separate equations are provided for both units (SI unit or US customary unit), other
local customary units may be converted and used in that equation. The result obtained from
execution of these equations may be converted to other units.

When values shown in calculations and analysis, fabrication documents, or measurement and

compliance and to ensure that dimensional consistency is maintained, shall be in accordance

       (a) Conversion factors (found in non-mandatory Appendix GG) shall be accurate to at least
            four significant figures.
       (b) The results of conversions of units shall be expressed to a minimum of three significant
            figures

All entries on a Manufacturer's Data Report and data for Code required nameplate marking
shall be in units consistent with the fabrication drawings for the component using U.S.
Customary, SI, or local customary units. It is acceptable to show alternate units
     parenthetically.

Q/A,
Q/A Units of Measurement

Question (1): Is it acceptable to maintain welder performance
qualification records in SI units, with a conversion table as part
of the welding manual to ensure that qualification limits are not
 exceeded? ?
Reply (1): Yes. Code Case 2523 provides information about
when such conversions are required and the requirements for
                    conversions
 performing such conversions.

Question (2): Is it acceptable to maintain welding procedure
specifications that are dual dimensioned with SI units primary
and U.S. Customary units in parentheses, with a conversion
table as part of the welding manual to ensure that qualification
 limits are not exceeded?
Reply (2): Yes. C d Case 2523 provides information about
