Hythe (Southampton) Sailing Club
1.1 The events will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing
1.2 Racing rules will be changed as follows:
RR 26 (Starting Races) is changed by Sailing Instruction (SI) 7.
RR 28.1 (c) (Sailing the Course) is changed by SI 10.2.
RR 29 (Recalls) is changed by SI 8.
2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS/CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
2.1 Notices to competitors and any changes to the sailing instructions will be posted on
the official notice board located in the clubhouse wet area.
2.2 The Race Committee may broadcast information to the fleet on VHF channel 77 as
deemed appropriate to the running of the event.
2.3 Sail numbers of boats starting prematurely may be broadcast on VHF Channel 77.
Competitors are reminded that such radio communication is provided as an aid only and
the provision or failure of such aid shall not form the basis of any protest.
3. RACE START TIMES
The scheduled race start time is 14:00
Individual boat start times after the first start are as shown in attachment “A” and will be
published on the Club Notice board.
4. CLASS FLAG/IDENTIFICATION
4.1 The class warning signal will be flag ‘C’.
4.2 Boats competing shall identify themselves to the Race Officer at the start line by
passing close to the committee boat and displaying their sail number.
5. THE COURSE
5.1 Race courses are shown at attachment “B”. The letter of the selected course to be
sailed will be displayed at the front of the clubhouse balcony.
6.1 Marks that may be used during the race are navigation marks or yellow spherical
racing marks as shown at attachment “C”.
6.2 The outer limit mark of the starting line will be an inflatable bouy.
7. THE START
7.1 The starting line will be between the committee boat (Hythe RIB moored on the club
mooring row 1) and the outer limit mark (inflatable buoy).
7.2 The race will be started as follows

Boats shall start when their published start number (appendix C) is displayed by the
Committee Boat. A single sound signal will be made at one-minute intervals.
This changes RR 26.
7.3 Competitors will be subject to racing rules from five minutes before their published
starting time or from the preparatory signal when manoeuvring in the start area.
7.4 A boat manoeuvring in the vicinity of the start and for which a valid entry form has
been submitted shall be deemed to have entered the race.
In the event of a postponement, all yachts will start at their published start time plus the
duration of the postponement. Start numbers will remain the same for each individual
boat. The finish time will be plus the duration of the postponement.
In the event of a boat starting prematurely, a second sound signal will be made but no
visual signal will be made.
This changes RR 29.
10. THE FINISH
10.1 There will be no finishing line.
10.2 Finishing will occur 100 minutes after the first start (15:40). Boats are
recommended to take note of their own finishing position and to record the identity of the
boats immediately ahead and astern.
10.3 After the finish time boats shall continue to sail the course maintaining their relevant
finish positions until released by the committee boat.
This changes RR 28.1 (C).
11. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS
11.1 Protests must be lodged, in writing, with the race officer within 2 hours of the finish
of the protesting boat, together with a protest fee of a full bottle of malt whisky, which is
non-returnable and will be auctioned for the Charity nominated.
11.2 Protests forms are available from the race officer or sailing secretary

12. HANDICAP/START TIMES
12.1 Individual boat start times will be calculated according to their corrected time for a
100 minute race using the Portsmouth Yardstick System as set out in RYA YR2.
12.2 Handicap Numbers will be taken from Byron Software Sail Race Management –
12.3 Variations from base trim for a specific boat will be made on production of a
handicap calculation prepared for that boat by Byron Software or as directed by the
Sailing Committee. The Sailing Committee will allocate provisional handicap numbers to
boats that do not appear in Byron Software.
13. RULE INFRINGMENTS AND PENALTIES
13.1 A boat taking a penalty under RR 44.1 (Taking a Penalty) and 44.2 (One-Turn and
Two-Turn Penalties) for an infringement of Part 2 of the RR shall report the
circumstances to the Race Officer. A boat failing to execute a penalty or to retire and not
exonerated after a protest hearing shall be disqualified.
13.2 A boat whilst racing, preparing to race or returning from a race shall not impede the
passage of navigating vessels. A boat entering the area of obstruction in front of a
vessel, causing it to take avoiding action or give warning signals may be disqualified.
14. SAFETY REGULATIONS
14.1 Boats retiring must inform the race officer or race committee.
14.2 Particular attention is drawn to IRPCS 9(b) “A vessel of less than 20 metres length
or a Sailing Vessel shall not impede the passage of a vessel, which can safely navigate
only within a narrow channel or fairway”.
14.3 Anchors shall not be carried from bow fairleads whilst racing.
15.1 The Cruiser Cup trophy will be awarded to race winner.
15.2 Non-members of HSC will be eligible for trophies and prizes at the discretion of the
